Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you're caught in a tight turn, you might be "chomped" by Inky or Blinky. That's the risk you take.

Answer: Pac-Man

The 1980 classic "Pac-Man" is one of the most popular video games of all time. Your avatar (the titular "Pac-Man") travels through the mazes eating power pellets while avoiding the four ghosts: Pinky, Inky, Blinky, and Clyde. The game appears largely endless, though it's not. Completing one maze just leads to another level and another maze, until you reach the infamous Level 256, where the game freezes and comes to an end.
2. You try to eliminate alien foes that slowly descend on you, row by row. The periodically appearing ship is more of a reward than the individual foes.

Answer: Space Invaders

This classic has been adapted to several gaming systems in addition to arcade consoles. You are only armed with a solitary laser cannon. There are periodic barriers that provide you with some protection. To attack your opponents, however, you fire through those barriers. The classic game "Space Invaders" first appeared in arcades in 1978.
3. Larry uses vines to swing over the alligators when he's not jumping from head to head to head. That seems to avoid the risk.

Answer: Pitfall

Larry travels through a jungle claiming valuable treasures and avoiding various dangers. These include alligators who always seem to come in groups of three. Larry can travel across the middle of the screen on the jungle floor or higher up on the vines or lower if he travels down into a pit.

This video game "Pitfall" comes from 1982. You need to complete the game in twenty minutes or less.
4. In this game, causing a foe to drop on a falling meat patty or bun can earn the reward of extra points.

Answer: Burger Time

The video game "Burger Time" first appeared in 1982. The three foes you (Peter Pepper) faced were Mr. Egg, Mr. Hot Dog, and Mr. Pickle. Your primary objective in the game was to knock down the various burger components onto the four plates at the bottom of the screen. Knocking down one of the foes was a bonus, so to speak. Your reward for assembling all four burgers was a new screen with new burgers.
5. You battle against your opponent. When you hit your opponent with a shot, his vehicle spins around. Is it really a reward?

Answer: Combat

The video game "Combat" was released in 1977. There are multiple choices for how you fight. You can be on the ground with tanks. For a different option, you can duel in the air with planes. Some versions of the game take place in a maze or have an invisible setting. Your bullets ricochet or not. When your bullet hits your tank, it spins around.
6. In this game you were trying to get an amphibian, not a chicken, to the other side of the road. That's the risk.

Answer: Frogger

"Frogger" really had two main parts. In the first half, you did have to avoid the road hazards (including the vehicles). In the second half, you navigated the flowing river via logs and various other animals. The final step was to leap onto an open lily pad. Not exactly a lot of extra rewards, but plenty of risks. This video game was released to the arcades in 1981.
7. It's a simple reward. You hit the ball to the other side and your opponent doesn't hit it back. You earned a point.

Answer: Pong

"Pong" was released as an arcade game in 1972 and a few years later in a home play edition. It is one of the first video games to be widely popular. The player turned a dial to move a paddle up and down the screen. There was no set limit to the number of points a player could earn.

The goal was simply to have more than your opponent. Over the years, "Pong" would be the basis for a large number of games.
8. A bouncing ball lets you work through colored bricks for a reward.

Answer: Breakout

"Breakout" features different colored bricks in the wall where removing the bricks are worth different points based on the color. You have to catch the ball on its return or you will lose a turn. The concept represents a prisoner using a ball and chain to break a hole through the wall and escape. It's that simple. "Breakout" was a video game released in 1976.
9. You run your character-warrior, wizard, Valkyrie, or elf-through a maze in this fantasy themed game. That's the risk.

Answer: Gauntlet

"Gauntlet" was a 1985 video game where up to four players could play simultaneously. If your life ran out, the game would continue as long as at least one player did. Later you could insert your quarter and continue your quest. What you were seeking was simple enough: treasure to increase your points or food to increase your energy.
10. Deliver the parcels as you travel down the lane. The reward for a tougher path is more points.

Answer: Paperboy

"Paperboy" is a 1985 video game where you were delivering the paper to the houses on a suburban block. There were three levels of difficulty with medium scoring double points and hard triple points. You had a choice with delivery to the mailbox or the front door. While playing you would try to avoid various obstacles that would cause you to lose a life.
