Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Released in 1984, "King's Quest" was revolutionary for its time because you could actually see and control the hero, Sir Graham, as he walked around a colourful fantasy world. Instead of simply reading descriptions and typing directions, you guided Graham through forests, mountains, caves, castles, rivers, and other locations displayed on the screen.

The kingdom of Daventry was made up of many interconnected scenes. Walking off the edge of one screen would take you to a new area, gradually revealing a large world full of hidden paths, fairy-tale characters, treasures, and dangers. As the adventure progressed, you often had to return to places you had visited earlier after discovering a new item or clue elsewhere.

Solving puzzles required both exploration and experimentation. As Graham, you could collect objects, talk to characters, and interact with the environment by typing simple commands into the game. For example, you might climb a tree, pick up a mushroom, open a door, play a fiddle, or throw a dagger. Success depended on figuring out which items to collect, where to use them, and how different clues and objects connected to one another.

In the original version of the game, the three treasures of the Kingdom of Daventry could be recovered in a variety of orders, although some routes were more practical than others. Regardless of the order chosen, each treasure required Sir Graham to gather specific items and overcome a unique set of challenges.

Reaching the Magic Chest required Graham to overcome a chain of fairy-tale challenges. He first lured a goat with a carrot and used it to knock a troll from a bridge, opening the way forward. Later, by correctly identifying Rumplestiltskin, he earned a pouch of magic beans. When planted, the beans grew into a towering beanstalk leading to the Land of the Clouds. There, a giant carried the prize around a quiet glade. The safest approach was to use the magic ring to become invisible, wait for the giant to fall asleep, and then quietly steal the Magic Chest. Adventurous players could also use a slingshot and pebbles to defeat the giant instead, though this earned fewer points.

Recovering the Magic Mirror involved exploring the depths beneath an old well. After uncovering a hidden dagger, Graham used it to retrieve a bucket and descend into the underground caverns below. There he filled the bucket with water and found the mirror guarded by a fearsome dragon. A well-aimed splash extinguished the beast's fiery breath and forced it to retreat, leaving the way clear to claim the Magic Mirror. Alternatively, a thrown dagger could slay the dragon, though doing so left Graham without the dagger and reduced his final score (and he had to retrace his route back up the well).

The search for the final treasure led Graham into the underground kingdom of the leprechauns. To reach it, he needed several unusual items, including cheese, a magic fiddle, and a mushroom. The cheese distracted a rat guarding the entrance, while the fiddle sent the entire leprechaun court dancing away from the throne room. With the chamber unguarded, Graham slipped into the treasure room and seized the Magic Shield. Before leaving, he could also take the royal sceptre, then use the mushroom's magic to escape from the underground realm and return the treasures to King Edward. Another option was to carry clover into the throne room; the leprechauns would ignore Graham while he claimed the Magic Shield, but the king would remain beside the sceptre, preventing him from obtaining both rewards.
