Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the night that the infection broke loose, Joel lost his daughter, Sarah. Was she killed by the infection?

Answer: No

The game's prologue takes place in Texas and in this you partly take control of Sarah, at least until everything hits the fan on the fateful night that the outbreak escalates. After Joel gets home from work and Sarah goes to bed, Sarah is awakened by explosions and chaos in the distance; Joel is attacked by the neighbour before the two hop into Tommy's truck and attempt to leave their Texas town.

It's during this escape that Sarah is killed. Though Joel and Sarah are able to run from danger, they find themselves spotted out by a military man with a gun, ordered to shoot on sight. He'll fire at Sarah, hitting her in the stomach, before he's taken out himself. There's nothing Joel and Tommy will be able to do but watch as Sarah bleeds out.
2. Ellie, as it is discovered, is infected by a bite on which part of her body?

Answer: Arm

Once Ellie is handed off to Joel and Tess to be taken out of the Boston Quarantine Zone, it's a short amount of time before they're all caught out by the military, and it's during a quick scan that it's discovered the Ellie is harbouring a problematic secret, specifically that she was bit several weeks earlier and has yet to turn. It's because of this injury that she's so valuable; it indicates her immunity to the Cordyceps infection.

The remainder of the game, for the most part, involves attempting to deliver Ellie to the Fireflies, wherever they end up finding them, in an effort to synthesize a cure, but this comes at its own cost.
3. In the Boston Quarantine Zone, Tess is which of the following?

Answer: Smuggler

Years after the Cordyceps infection spread, the survivors had to reconsolidate, forming small communities and quarantine zones around the United States in order to protect themselves from dangers of all sorts. In Boston, Joel works alongside Ellie, a smuggler, for a number of smaller jobs, and finds success hacking it with his resourcefulness.

It's the resourcefulness that makes both Joel and Tess important to Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, who requests that the pair smuggle Ellie safely out of the Boston Quarantine Zone. It's during this effort to escape the Boston area that Tess is bitten by an infected and sacrifices herself against the military to give the others a bit of time and distance. It's because of this sacrifice that Joel and Ellie are able to escape into the nearby town of Lincoln and continue their journey west.
4. The leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, asks Joel and Tess to get Ellie out of the Boston Quarantine Zone. Where does Joel encounter Marlene again?

Answer: Salt Lake City

Marlene already has a reputation when Joel and Tess encounter her in the Boston Quarantine Zone. The problem, however, is that the Fireflies are revolting against the military there, so while Marlene handles the problem at hand, in a roundabout way she employs the smugglers to get Ellie out of the city, aiming to put her in the hands of her scientists. She ultimately isn't forthcoming about Ellie's unique circumstances.

Marlene is met once more in Salt Lake City when Joel and Ellie finally make it to their destination. Unfortunately, by this point, Joel has a much more significant relationship with the girl and will find himself unwilling to put her at risk to find the cure. It'll mean killing Marlene, who stands in their way, to get away from the Fireflies and to safety.
5. In Lincoln, Joel and Ellie seek out Bill in an effort to secure which of these?

Answer: A vehicle

As soon as Joel and Ellie make it out of the Boston Quarantine Zone and the surrounding area, Joel will beeline for the town of Lincoln, where the surly and paranoid prepper, Bill, will owe him a favour or two. Their trip there will be a fraught with not only infected hordes, but traps, all laid out by Bill, to keep unwanted people and creatures out. Nonetheless, they'll get to him.

Joel and Ellie's trip with Bill may be short and argumentative, but they will end up crossing Lincoln as a trio, fighting larger and larger foes, to inevitably find a working vehicle that they can ride all the way out to Pittsburgh. As soon as he can hand off the vehicle, Bill will consider his debt with Joel repaid and turn for home, never to be seen again.
6. Which of these is true about Sam?

Answer: He's younger than Henry

Joel and Ellie will encounter brothers Sam and Henry when they pass through Pittsburgh, effortfully avoiding the bandits out for blood, and though Sam will be apprehensive about working with the pair, it'll turn out that they're all headed the same direction-- out of the city to a meet-up point to head onward to the Fireflies.

Henry, the older of the two brothers, will be extremely cautious of the danger that he and his brother are in, but he'll open up when it appears that Ellie and Joel are not only good resources, but safer to be around. The four of them will cross through the sewers outside Waverly Township together. The problem is that their time in Waverly will be marred by an encounter that leaves Sam infected, and he'll keep this hidden until it's too late.
7. A pivotal night in the suburbs of Pittsburgh spells Henry's end by which means?

Answer: Suicide

Once it's revealed that Sam has been infected by a Clicker during the group's rush through Waverly Township, it'll be too late; the group will wake up after a morning in a local safehouse and he'll attack Ellie. It'll force Henry to make a split-second decision to put his brother out of his misery, and only moments after that, he'll turn the gun on himself, unable to cope with what he's been pushed to do.

With that, Joel and Ellie will need to proceed to Jackson on their own.
8. When Joel encounters his brother, Tommy, outside of Jackson, he discovers that he's married to whom?

Answer: Maria

Tommy, Joel's brother, first appears in the game's prologue, showing up as an escape plan once the infected start attacking. It's fortunate that he'll end up surviving over the years, first being an active figure during Marlene's rise in the Fireflies, but eventually making a home for himself out in Jackson, Wyoming, settling down with his new wife, Maria.

Joel will encounter Tommy again when he and Ellie make it out to Jackson and his intent will be to hand Ellie off so that they can take the rest of the route to the Fireflies' encampment. Naturally, Joel ends up taking her the rest of the way himself, partly because he has a change of heart, but partly because Tommy appears to be settling down to raise a family.
9. Ellie's final encounter with David has her facing him down in which location?

Answer: Restaurant

After a pivotal encounter with bandits on the University of Eastern Colorado campus, Joel will be severely injured and Ellie will stow him away in the basement of a resort lodge elsewhere in the state, hoping to ride out the winter and his ailments. This will lead her to have to be self-sufficient, and she'll do this well until she encounters David and his group of survivors who, after providing her antibiotics, will pursue her in an effort to bolster their food supply. Yes-- it'll turn out they're cannibals.

It becomes more of a problem after David discovers Ellie is infected, against all logic, and she'll make an escape attempt. This will culminate in a fight in a restaurant dining room where she'll need to use all her strength to, violently, take out David with his own machete. Joel will find her there in the ruins of a burning building.
10. Although she alludes to Riley at the end of the story, Ellie notes that she was who of the following, to her?

Answer: Her best friend

Riley never appears during the main story of "The Last of Us Part I", but she is a key figure in the "Left Behind" DLC, which shows how Ellie got infected. The two, best friends, would find themselves in a bind in a mall near the Boston Quarantine Zone when they encountered the infected and both wound up injured by the creatures. Both, instead of opting for suicide, decided to hold out and spend as much time as possible together before turning.

While Riley turned, Ellie never did.
