Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your generic enemy, the Kashimashi, wields which weapon?

Answer: Knife

Hinako first encounters these when wandering the near-empty streets and alleys of Ebisugaoka, and the seasoned "Silent Hill" player will likely be quick to note that these are representations of Hinako's fragile psyche. Tall foes with doll-like movements and appendages, these enemies will lurch around the narrow corridors of town, swiping and lunching with knives to attack Hinako if she's within their line of sight. Fortunately, these are also amongst the weakest enemies in the game, so they should be quite easy to do away with if encountered.

A variation encountered a bit later, the Harai Katashiro, will be similar to the Kashimashi, but its legs will be replaced by blades and it will wield a sword.
2. Kamugara can sense Himako via which means?

Answer: Sound

A faceless, shackled, maggoty being covered in barbs as though run through with wires, Kamugara are first met in the Shrine Path in Fox Mask's other dimension and unlike the Kashimashi back in Ebisugaoka, these enemies will come back to life when defeated.

Heartier than the more generic and plentiful Kashimashi, these enemies will be a bit easier if you can master the ability to parry attacks. You should keep in mind, however, that they have predictable, but devastating attack chains. These will be a particular nuisance during the Shrine Vault puzzle, but will only attack if they hear Himako.

The quieter, the better.
3. Only one Ara-abare is fought throughout the game.

Answer: False

Covered in red pustules and spider lilies, the Ara-abare first appears next to the storehouse in the farmlands east of Ebisugaoka and, according to Hinako's journals "appears to be filled to the brim with a maniacal anger, worse than a wild animal." Up until this point, it'll be the heartiest foe you face, but it's not quite a boss battle, especially since these large enemies start popping up at key junctures throughout the journey.

Another can be found at the General Store, for instance, and defeating it will net an achievement depending on your console.
4. Lore clippings found throughout Ebisugaoka indicate that a local monster, Ayakakashi, appears as which of these?

Answer: Scarecrow

As Hinako heads towards Rinku's house she'll reach the rice paddy fields that sit next to the edge of town, and it's here that she'll start encountering articles and clippings referencing the legends of Ebisugaoka's local monster, the Ayakakashi. According to locals, this scarecrow-like creature waits in the fields and you should neither watch them for long nor get too close or it will spring to life and chase you, only stopping when it eats you.

Naturally, you'll start encountering these in short order, even needing to navigate puzzles with the threat looming right in your face.
5. The Oi-Omoi appears as a stack of doll parts. Which of these actions can it make?

Answer: Wail

First encountered in the corridors of the Dark Shrine when you collect the Stone Orb, these enemies are nothing more than doll parts-- usually the head and arms-- assembled to create a bipedal form. You might compare some of its body parts to those of a centipede, forming in spine-like ways to stack its heads and move.

These foes are often found hopscotching around in your path, and when they accidentally trip and fall, they'll let out awful cries, intensifying Hinako's headaches and stunning her temporarily. Ideally you're not fleeing other monsters at the same time; sometimes you will be.
6. A Shrine Maiden with Sakuko's voice guards part of the Dark Shrine. She will use which of these in battle?

Answer: Bell

The Dark Shrine will create manifestations of Hinako's closest friends, but it will transform them into entities with great and dangerous powers. Sakuko, the daughter of a temple priest, will act as a supernatural Shrine Maiden in the otherworld, posing as a guard for deeper progress.

In addition to using a mace on a chain for most of the battle, she will teleport around the arena to ring her Suzu Bell, creating blasts of energy. When she's hit enough, Fox Mask will step in to keep her at bay and he'll help Hinako cleanse herself at the purifying basis beyond the next door.
7. The Irohihi, which appears with distinctive orange tendrils on its face, is a stationary creature.

Answer: False

The Irohihi is actually more aggressive, a sign that the encroaching plants and lifeforms that are taking over Ebisugaoka are actually much more problematic than first glance. These enemies do not stand still. In fact, when they come across Hinako, they'll rush over to her on all fours, attacking with fierce blows (though they are still parryable).

This dangerous enemy starts appearing when Hinako starts following Shu and Rinko to the Middle School, up towards the mountain pass. According to Hinako's journal, this creature only goes after women.
8. The Corruptor, first encountered in a blighted Ebisugaoka house, attacks with a slime of what colour?

Answer: Red

En route to the Ebisugaoka Middle School, following behind Shu and Rinko, Hinako will encounter the Corrupter foe for the first time when she takes a path through a heavily-infested household, opening the door to face a horrifying enemy composed of numerous heads morphed into a blob above a pair of legs.

This loud enemy will spew red liquid in every direction around it, but if you stay at a distance, it'll expend this attack and rest, giving you the perfect opportunity to go in hard to put an end to it.
9. According to her journal, Hinako would rather die than turn into a monster like the Hatcher, which has which ability?

Answer: It can birth new enemies

Covered in skin-crawling mounds, the Hatcher is a large beast that appears to be crawling on its back, positioned to spawn new monsters periodically (though sometimes it will just lay sacks that burst open in a damaging spray). Additionally this enemy, which appears frequently towards the end of the game, has a lurching charge attack and the ability to shoot blasts of acid from a range.

This enemy can take a lot of hits, and in a smaller space, it can be difficult to maneuver around to get the right vantage point. As long as you keep on top of its new offspring and get in strong hits, it'll be vanquished.
10. There is one foe that's capable of drawing others into action. What item does it wield?

Answer: Drum

The Drum Monster only appears a couple of times over the course of the game, and rarely where you want to encounter such a large foe. On its own, it's not an extremely difficult enemy to face, especially since it doesn't have a very wide swing for attacks, but when placed in a room with other, lesser enemies, it has the power to rally those creatures into more deadly action by playing its drums. Being able to prevent it from making that choice will be helpful, but so is simply dealing with the adds as they appear (if at all) to focus entirely on the big monster when you can.
11. The entity that uses Rinko's voice in the Dark Shrine fuels her evil puppets with which of these?

Answer: Fire

Just as a Shrine Maiden of Sakuko appeared earlier in the Dark World, a foe bearing Rinko's emotions, pushed to the extreme, appears in the Main Hall. Fuelled by jealousy, this boss foe blasts out with fire shots and attacks with a chain whip and an onunsa staff, normally used for purification rituals.

In addition to regular attacks, this entity can also summon babbling puppets which, when struck with fire, will race towards Hinako and explode, kamikazing to do massive and stunning damage.
12. During the fight against Hinako's Parents, defeating which of these will end the battle immediately?

Answer: Her father

Unlocking the final door in the Shimizu Residence will bring Hinako face-to-face with her oppressive father and her subservient mother, and both of them will transform into monstrous versions of themselves to engage in battle, essentially meaning that her father will become a stronger Ara-abare
and her mother will be a slow-to-move, ranged supporting foe.

Because of the power dynamic between the two, you can defeat Hinako's mother first and keep fighting, but bringing down her father will immediately end the battle, no matter how much you hit her mother. The pair will shed their monstrous forms and depart out the back door...only to meet the fog monster outside.
13. Shiromuku, the canonical final boss, wears which of these?

Answer: Wedding clothes

The Shiromuku, the final boss of Hinako's first playthrough, is meant to be representative of her in the real world-- a bride in turmoil-- and as the story progresses it becomes very apparent that the two characters are one in the same. The final battle against Shiromuku is, thus, a tough one, as the version of Hinako still clinging to life must face off against her otherworldly self. Even then, in the first playthrough of the game, Hinako never really escapes the boss' clutches; felling the Shiromuku in battle means encountering it later on in the final moments.
14. Those who fight the Tsukumogami can do so if they achieve which optional game ending?

Answer: Fox's Wedding

'Coming Home to Roost' is the regular first playthrough ending (for which the Shiromuku is the final boss), but pursuing the 'Fox's Wedding' ending, which has you collecting a Sacred Sword and purifying it in the Dark Shrine, will get you closer to an alternate ending.

In either 'Fox's Wedding' the final boss will instead be the Tsukumogami, the embodiment of Shu in the Dark Shrine. It is also fought again in the game's true ending, 'Ebisugaoka in Silence', still at the Dark Shrine's Final Path.
15. In order to fight Shichibi and Kyubi, you can not use which of these in your New Game+ playthrough?

Answer: Red Capsules

Shichibi appears in the 'Fox Wets Its Tail' ending, which can only be achieved obtained by not using a single Red Capsule to heal, and by obtaining the Unpurified Sacred Sword. This one is a tough one as not only will you head into battle against the Tsukumogami (as human Hinako), but also against Kyubi as Fox Hinako; you'll actually switch between the two as each boss enters a new phase of the battle, and there are three phases per boss.

This will ultimately lead itself to be the 'True Ending' of the game if completed, though it's only possible in New Game+.
