Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, of these, is Hinako's older sister?

Answer: Junko

On one fateful day, Hinako Shimizu will walk away from he family residence, leaving as her drunk father and her subservient mother behind while she attempts to destress from being berated. Unfortunately, per her father's wishes, she's not enough like her older sister, Junko, who's away, married to a good husband.

Hinako realizes that there's really no one around in her town, Ebisugaoka, but she plods onward nonetheless, inevitably finding her friends, Sakuko, Rinko, and Shu, when she arrives at the Chizuruya General Store. While Sakuko, much to Hinako's concern, keeps referring to her as a traitor, Shu will hand over a pack of Red Capsules, which he claims may help with her recent headaches. Shu promises he'll always be there for Hinako, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. It's then that an awful monster sweeps in with the fog, creating a wave of red plants, killing Sakuko, and sending the survivors running.

Hinako will survive the chase, possibly due to her sister's unexpected intervention, and return to the General Store to lay Sakuko to rest before facing down a trio of fearsome enemies. She'll collapse as the fog rolls in, transforming the town of Ebisugaoka into something quite different.
2. In the Shrine Path, your success in opening the Shrine Vault will rely on you locating symbols found on which of these?

Answer: Ema

Hinako will awaken in a dark and foggy shrine and need to engage with some puzzles to find her way out, opening a route into a more dire environment that results in detrimental headaches. Fortunately, a man in a Fox Mask will appear before her, handing her a lantern and beckoning her to follow out of the building and into a more open expanse of pathways and locked buildings.

Hinako will eventually find her way to a Shrine Vault and a Shrine proper, but both will be sealed up. To get to where she needs to be, she needs a key to hand off to an Inari statue, but to get that, she needs to find the combination to the lock on the vault door, and that's something she can only do by solving a cryptic poem and searching amongst hundreds of Ema tiles for the correct symbols.

Worse still, Hinako will stumble across a childhood doll that warns her not to trust the Fox Mask, and a battle against faceless monsters will ensue. If she can fight off the new foes, find the symbols, get the key she needs, and rush to the right door, she can go inside and escape this realm... for now.
3. Heading to Rinko's, Hinako will pass through a field of scarecrows, most of which take on the appearances of which of these?

Answer: Schoolchildren

Hinako awakens at the General Store with Shu watching over her. It all seems like a terrible dream with a monster around every corner, but they both know they need to find Rinko, and decide to head towards her house through the nearby farmers fields. Hinako worries that this is all a nightmare resulting from the fact that they need to grow up; Shu says it must be real, regardless of the reason they're being punished.

What the pair find, as they travel through the fields, is that large, pulsing mounts of red spider lily tendrils are emerging from the ground, in some cases blocking their paths, and some of the monsters they encounter appear to be derived from this. Hinako and Shu will accidentally split up (leading to a long trip through an impossibly large field of scarecrows), but they'll eventually reach Rinko's, heading inside to discover that they're unable to proceed further down the road to leave town via the bridge. It's Shu's idea to, instead, head to his place; they can take the highway past the mountain to find help.

On the way out, Rinko seems to (intentionally) push Kinako down the stairs, sending her mind into the Dark Shrine once again. This time she'll find herself lost in a series of corridors, hunting for a way through to Fox Mask and his next shrine. The problem is that Sakuko's corrupted spirit appears to be the Shrine Maiden here, and she needs to be defeated before Hinako can be cleansed of her sins.
4. The only way for Hinako to reach the mountain pass is by finding a route through which destination in town?

Answer: The Middle School

Awakening at the bottom of Rinko's staircase, Hinako will be let in on the plan to head to Shu's house, passing through the back road to the highway via a mountain pass. With the town overrun, this means heading to their middle school and finding the path from there, following the others as they take the lead. The mountain path will be locked, naturally, but there should be a key in the school. Rinko and Shu will suggest that they relax for a bit, as they led the way, so Hinako will have to explore alone.

As Hinako explores she'll come across more and more evidence that Rinko is actually in love with Shu and, in following through on this, actively attempts to leave Hinako behind. Junko, whose spirit appears before Hinako, remarks that friends don't last forever.

Before long, Hinako can find the key to the mountain pass in an office cabinet (though it will take a bit of time to get it) and return to the others who, perhaps not in any sort of considerate way, recommend that she sleep while they stand guard outside. And so she does.
5. Foes in the Dark Shrine will not resurrect if killed in the presence of which of these?

Answer: Blue Light

Fox Mask awakens Hinako once again, this time in front of the Worship Hall, right in front of the shrine of purifying water. This time her visit to this other world is met with labyrinthine corridors (a theme!), most of which replicate places in Ebisugaoka and contain further hints that Rinko isn't a good friend. Along the way, Hinako will encounter versions of her friends, including Sakuko, who was killed, trapped in various spots, and she needs to kill them all to proceed, believing that in spite of her being a traitor (as Rinko would put it), she needs to let go of her past to move forward.

The fights in this part of the Dark Shrine, which include a fight against a creature that births new enemies while it battles, include rooms that are bathed in blue lanterns, not unlike the one carried by Fox Mask. Defeating foes in close proximity to these will prevent them from resurrecting after a short time.

At the end of this visit, Fox Mask will sympathize that it must be hard to leave her childhood friends behind, but Hinako agrees it had to be done as soon as she could. This conversation will mark her return to the real world, waking her up in the school room to find that Shu and Rinko have gone ahead without her.
6. In the Dark Shrine, Rinko starts her transformation into a beast by completing how many sacred rituals?

Answer: Three

Hinako awakens in the Middle School alone with the gate to the mountain pass wide open, Shu and Rinko having gone ahead without her. The plan remains to head to Shu's place, so she'll head onwards, evading the fog monster, until she gets past the torii marking his property. She won't be completely safe here though. The monster will grab her and drag her out into the woods, sending her back to the Dark Shrine (there appears to be a trend here!).

With Hinako having killed her friends in the Dark Shrine, her next order of business is undergoing three rituals placed before her by Fox Mask which will put her into trials of great pain and suffering. Hinako is, thus, unafraid when she is forced to remove her own arm with a thick, serrated blade (replacing it with a bestial arm that allows her to Soul Siphon), receive a painful brand on her back (giving her a Bestial Form), and remove part of her own face to replace it with a Mask of the Fox Clan (giving her the ability to focus and create hidden paths).

At the end of the path through the Main Hall, Hinako will face off against a shrine maiden of molten flesh and chains. This one is the manifestation of Rinko's jealousy, and defeating it will allow Hinako to proceed into the deepest reaches of the Dark Shrine.
7. Hinako will face off against who of these when she returns to the Shimizu Residence?

Answer: Her parents

Hinako will awaken in the woods outside of Shu's place and, at last, head inside to find the phone ringing, a particular surprise because Hinako's mother will be on the line, asking her to return home through Ebisugaoka. Junko will appear, masked, acknowledging that Hinako seems lost; she must decide her future, and the decision is hers alone. Worse yet, she's running out of time, and the route home will be fraught with danger since Ebisugaoka will be completely overrun by the red lilies. All of this will lead Hinako through flashbacks of key memories, some involving her friends and some involving her parents, who led her to the inciting incident of the game-- leaving home because her drunk father fought about his debts.

Hinako will keep encountering Junko, who states that there is a version of her who isn't quite herself and it will be clear that they have to fight to the death as equals. Hinako, however, keeps running away from this inevitability. If she persists, Junko says, she'll kill her and her friends before destroying the Shimizu house and the town.

In a version of her home, expanded in the otherworly realm of the Dark Shrine, Hinako will find transformed versions of her parents, both of whom will engage in battle against her in the final chamber. Instead of perishing altogether upon being defeated, they'll depart their home and step outside...only to face the fog monster as it destroys them in a graphic turn. A migraine will bring Hinako to her knees, once again leading her to black out.
8. In the Treasure Hall, Fox Mask and Hinako will proceed into the final chamber by exchanging which of these?

Answer: Rings

In one of Hinako's final trips to the Dark Shrine, Fox Mask will gift her with a special brooch bearing a fox, proof that she belongs to him. Her body, however, with its new customizations, will take some acclimatization; there's still healing to do. And with that she'll be thrust into the puzzling Treasure Hall of the otherworld, hunting down a trio of crests to open a pathway through a lore-laden tapestry that heeds a revelation.

Before Hinako can open the route, Junko will interrupt her once more. It's a short discussion for the sisters wherein Junko will remind her that she must kill the last vestiges she needs to be able to carry on, and if she doesn't follow through, Junko will step in and do it for her.

Fox Mask will meet Hinako on the other side and the two will be presented with rings to be placed upon a statue. Interestingly, the pair will have each others' rings, requiring that they symbolically trade before opening the final doorway.

It's then that Hinako, once more, wakes up back in Ebisugaoka.
9. The fog monster, as Hinako will come to discover, is a manifestation of who of these?

Answer: Herself

With a renewed sense of fury, Hinako will need to rush through Ebisugaoka once again, this time chasing the Fog Monster that killed her parents. She will return to the General Store, where all of this seemed to begin, and find that which she's been seeking, but the monster will grab her in its fox-like clutches as Junko emerges from the shadows. With one tightened grip, Hinako will be killed.

She'll return to the Dark Shrine's Worship Hall to find Fox Mask and this time, after one last ceremony, she'll return to Ebisoguaoka, but in a new form, empowered by the red flowers that have grown around town, allowing her to attack with her fox powers in the real world. As a result, she will become the Fog Monster, a ghostly bride she'd been running from this whole time, and her human form will be no more. The spectre of Junko will say goodbye, at last, and wish her happiness with what comes next.

Despite repeated warnings, Hinako will head back to her house through the fog, with the Dark Shrine monsters now present to fight through the alleys of Ebisugaoka and at the summit she'll reunite with her parents. Here, her mother will compliment her and father will say it's not her home anymore; she shouldn't expect to be let back inside. Unfortunately for them, she is the monstrous form that she witnessed kill her parents when she last visited her home. In a case of the nightmare repeating, she'll kill them both, as she did earlier without realizing.
10. Which of these, as it appears, is a catalyst for Hinako's real world mental state?

Answer: Shu's medication

Hinako awakens in the Dark Shrine one last time and encounters one final gauntlet in her formerly human form which, surprisingly, clings to her former life with great resilience. It's enough to bring Junko back to ridicule her, asking why she thinks she still has a chance as her old self. But it all comes to a moment of (comparative) clarity when Hinako keeps ingesting Shu's Red Capsules for her pain. As Hinako takes more, she angrily smashes the altar of the Treasure Room and engages in battle against the Shiromuku, the bride, racing through visions of both the Dark Shrine and Ebisugaoka, ending in a hallway littered with the medication.

If Hinako can reach what she believes to be the end of the path, she'll find herself once again at the feet of Shiromuku. But is this the end? Perhaps of this cycle of Hinako's struggle, but that's not to say that revisiting her journey won't result in new mysteries unfolding in her story.

In the real world, the police will arrive at the scene of a wedding day massacre at Tsuneyoshi Shrine. Several guests, they note, are dead; a female suspect has fled the scene. Witnesses state that she was consuming red and white capsules at the time.
