Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away" is the official state song of Indiana. It was written in 1897 by Paul Dresser, and it became an instant nationwide hit. "The Indianapolis News" on Friday May 20, 1898, reported that nearly a million copies of the sheet music of "Wabash" had already been sold. It would go on to be one of the best selling pieces of music of the 19th century.
The song is a slow, sentimental ballad that spends a lot of time daydreaming about rural Indiana life, complete with waving cornfields, sweet-smelling hay, and candlelight gleaming through the trees. To quote John Oliver, "Cool!" People loved the song's catchy chorus and bucolic sentimentality so much that the state government stepped in and made it the official anthem in 1913.
However, while it sounds like a peaceful tribute to the Midwest, the backstory comes with plenty of drama. First of all, the song is a massive downer - perhaps the most depressing of all the state songs out there. Instead of being an upbeat anthem to get people cheering, the lyrics are about the singer missing his mother and mourning his dead ex-girlfriend, Mary, who is literally buried in a churchyard cemetery. The song HEAVILY implies this is because when the singer begged her for marriage that Mary didn't believe him and offed herself. The song closes with him reflecting on Mary dead in a churchyard and the singer offering to "trade all of [his] tomorrows for one single yesterday To be holdin' [Mary]'s body next to [his]." With apologies to Janis, but she puts it better.
Then there is the family drama: after Dresser died, his famous novelist brother, Theodore Dreiser (he of "Sister Carrie" fame), started telling everyone he actually wrote the lyrics. To make things worse, another song called "Back Home Again in Indiana" came out a few years later and basically copied the melody and vibe. That newer song became a massive hit at the Indianapolis 500, leaving Indiana's actual official state song completely ignored and left in the dust.
