The official state anthem of Florida is "Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky". Written and composed by Pompano Beach music teacher Jan Hinton, it captures the unique landscapes, diverse cultures, range of ages, and general spirit of the entire state in a way that all residents could easily celebrate.
The anthem was born from a 2007 statewide contest launched to find a more inclusive and modern musical identity for Florida. Jan Hinton's composition won the competition on January 11, 2008, after being chosen from numerous submissions. The Florida Legislature officially adopted it as the formal state anthem later that same year, giving the state a fresh track to play at official government ceremonies and public events without all those references to... well, let's not get ourselves cancelled, shall we?
The lyrics focus on Florida's natural wonders and its reputation as a welcoming haven. Lines within the song cover everything from mockingbirds to 'gators while bridges run to the Keys and rockets blast off into space. All this is fine and dandy, but one is left pining for the snakes flushed down the toilets, face-eating Florida-Man...and seriously, NO DISNEY?!?!?
Before this anthem was chosen, Florida relied entirely on its traditional state song, "Old Folks at Home" (also known as "Swanee River"), which was adopted back in 1935. Written by Stephen Foster in 1851, that older song faced heavy criticism due to its original, racially offensive minstrel-show lyrics - go look up the original and when you do, remember people SANG this at state meetings. Rather than deleting the old song completely, lawmakers decided to rewrite its controversial lyrics to be historically respectful while adding the sawgrass track as a brand-new, separate anthem.
