Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The main?...Maine?...maine?... official anthem, excitingly titled "State of Maine (Song)," was written in 1931 by one Roger Vinton Snow. He submitted it to a local publicity contest, won the prize, and the state legislature officially adopted it in 1937.

The anthem is just like the original entry for the Earth in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", "Harmless". It is a sweet, short ballad about how beautiful the Pine Tree State's landscape is. The lyrics spend their time rambling on about the scent of fragrant pines, the tang of the salty sea, and the "rock-bound coast". It wraps up with a chorus that claims if "fate unkind" ever forces you to move away from Maine, the sheer memory of the wilderness will eventually drag you right back home. Like mom telling you that you will miss her cookies, and need a place to wash your clothes eventually. But in something that seems increasingly common with these songs, it takes a wild turn at the end. This one breaks into a rah-rah-siss-boom-bah chant that would sound more at home in a pep rally than at the opening to the state legislature - "Than Maine! Maine! Maine!" - It's a bit like the song forgets it's supposed to be a dignified anthem and suddenly transforms into the pump it up climax to the football team running on to the field.

But more comedy comes from the fact that Maine cannot stop voting in new official music. In 2012, the politicians decided they needed an official state march. Later, in 2019, they legally adopted an official state ballad called "The Ballad of the 20th Maine" about the Civil War, sung by "The Ghost of Paul Revere" - I assume their collective noses ache from the amount of on that is.

Not wanting the 21st century to feel left out, the legislature stepped in again in 2021 and created a brand-new category called the "State Song of the 21st Century". At this rate, the state government won't be satisfied until they have an official state polka, an official state heavy metal track, and an official state EDM remix.

And speaking of state polkas...well, just wait till you get to Massachusetts.
