On November 29, 1806, it was assimilated by the legislature of the Indiana Territory as Vincennes University. It was founded by future U.S. president William Henry Harrison, making it as one of only three colleges founded by U.S. presidents. The University at Buffalo and the University of Virginia are the only others. They are called the Trailblazers.

The Illinois State Redbirds of the Missouri Valley Conference. Officially located in Normal. It was originally founded as Illinois State Normal University. Their fight song is "Go, You Redbirds!" Jackie Metcalf worked her way through the profession by beginning her career with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. She went to college with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise.

Jerry Krause, who was a General Manager for the Chicago Bulls during Michael Jordan's time, also managed the Bulls to six NBA Championships.
