Scully had originally answered that hopefully she'd choose to be herself. Mulder objected on the basis of her response being boring, and asked, "wouldn't you even be tempted to try out someone else's existence for a day, live your life as somebody else?" Scully reminded him that "Looking like someone else, Mulder, and being someone else are completely different things." Mulder didn't deny Scully's point, but countered that "everybody else around you would treat you like you were somebody else, and ultimately maybe it's other people's reactions to us that make us who we are." After a brief pause, Scully caved and said she'd be Eleanor Roosevelt, but Mulder objected to that one too, saying it had to be a living person.

Flakita described for her audience the conflict between Eladio and Soledad, as both of them loved Maria. When the goats started returning, Flakita ran over the hill to look for Maria, and found her lying dead in the field next to a dead goat. Both bodies were covered in yellow fungus.

Scully put on a face shield and full arm gloves and opened the unit, ready to start going through its contents. Mulder was clearly grossed out, and told Scully that if she wasn't sure the body was in there, he didn't "see that there's any reason to disturb all this stuff." Scully ignored him and felt around a bit before telling him, "Mulder, I think I'm going to need your help. Your arms are longer." Mulder reluctantly put on the gear and reached into the waste, finding Betts' head.
