Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the raid, the agents were unable to find Vernon Ephesian in the compound. Who found them in the field?

Answer: Mulder

In the compound Mulder was transfixed by a design in a glass door. He went through the door and outside, where he heard a voice in his mind saying "I am he that liveth and was dead. And behold, I am alive forevermore." Scully followed him outside and into the field, where Mulder found and opened the trapdoor to the bunker just as the wives were about to kill themselves.
2. After the compound was raided, on what charges were Ephesian and his six wives being held?

Answer: possession of dangerous chemicals

The agents hadn't been able to find the firearms, but they arrested Ephesian and the wives for almost killing themselves with poison. Of course, the charges were weak and wouldn't give the agents much time to question the cultists.
3. When interviews with Ephesian were getting nowhere, Mulder decided to move on to questioning Melissa. When the agents asked her about child abuse at the compound, Sidney came out. Mulder thought that, rather than a case of multiple personalities, Melissa was actually dealing with her own past lives. When asked, who did Sidney say was President?

Answer: Harry Truman

Truman was president from 1945-53, at the beginning of the Cold War. When the agents were trying to determine who they were talking to, Sidney quipped, "What is this? The McCarthy hearings?" When Sidney had originally called the BATF agents to tip them off on the weapons at the compound, she'd mentioned that "you could beat the whole Korean army" with the weapons they had stockpiled. Mulder believed that Sidney was one of Melissa's past lives.
4. Trying to get Melissa to open up, Scully and Mulder took her back to the compound alone. Melissa went to a children's playroom. When Scully tried to ask her about what went on there, Melissa became Lily, a young personality. What did Lily ask Scully if she could do?

Answer: touch her tongue to her nose

Scully tried to ask Lily if any of her friends were hurt in the children's playroom, but Lily wouldn't answer. When Scully persisted, Lily gave way to Sidney.
5. One of Melissa's personalities had a Southern accent. During which war did this personality claim she'd watched Mulder die?

Answer: Civil War

The agents followed Melissa out to the field and asked her about the other bunkers. Melissa started talking about being a nurse in the Civil War, as the Confederate soldiers hid weapons in a bunker. On the 26th of November, 1863, she'd hid in a bunker as all the soldiers on the field above had been killed. Melissa then turned to Mulder and said, "I was here.

As were you. This is the field where I watched you die."
6. In the hypnotherapy session, Melissa's Southern-accented personality noted that the color of Mulder's what had changed?

Answer: eyes

When Mulder spoke to Melissa in the session, Melissa opened her eyes and looked at him, saying, "Your eyes may have changed shade, but it cannot color the soul behind them. We have come together in this life, this time. Only to meet in passing. It is so heartbreaking to wait. I miss you." That was all the agents could get out of Melissa and her personalities, so Mulder decided to undergo hypnotherapy as well.
7. Who was NOT mentioned as playing a part in Mulder's past lives?

Answer: Skinner

During his hypnotherapy session, Mulder described two past lives. The first was during Nazi Germany, when he was a Polish Jewish woman and Samantha was his son. Scully was his father, "dead in the street," and the Cigarette-Smoking Man was a Gestapo agent standing next to his body. Mulder commented that "evil returns as evil." Melissa was Mulder's husband, taken away from him to a concentration camp.

The second life was the Civil War field, where Scully was Mulder's dead sergeant. Mulder recounted being held by Melissa, in her life as Sarah Kavanaugh.

He said that she was sad and that she didn't know that he was waiting for her in another life.
8. Mulder was clearly perturbed by the possibility of his previous lives and asked Scully if they would have treated one another differently if they'd known for certain that they had been together in other lifetimes. What did Scully joke that she could have lived without?

Answer: "that Flukeman thing"

Scully initially answered, "Even if I knew for certain, I wouldn't change a day." Then, on her way out of the office, she stopped at the door and revised her statement: "Well, maybe that Flukeman thing. I could've lived without that just fine." This seems to be a reference to season two's "The Host".

The Flukeman in that episode was played by Darin Morgan, whose brother, Glen Morgan, co-wrote "The Field Where I Died".
9. How did the cultists successfully commit mass suicide?

Answer: poison

Just as in Jonestown, the entire cult drank poisoned juice and committed suicide at the urging of their leader.
10. Mulder saved Melissa's life.

Answer: false

He didn't get there in time. Though Melissa survived her first glass of poison, Ephesian did as well, and was there to give her another. When Mulder got to the room, they were both dead. He found Melissa clutching the ripped photograph of Sarah Cavanaugh.
