Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color was the hot rain?

Answer: yellow

Flakita described for her audience the conflict between Eladio and Soledad, as both of them loved Maria. After Soledad left for work, Eladio followed Maria over a hill to recapture some goats, when there was a flash of light followed by a hot yellow rain.

When the goats started returning, Flakita ran over the hill to look for Maria, and found her lying dead in the field next to a dead goat. Both bodies were covered in yellow fungus.
2. What did the migrant workers blame Maria's death on?

Answer: Chupacabra

Mulder explained to Scully that the Chupacabra was "the goatsucker. It's a small gray creature with a big head and a small body and big black bulging eyes." Flakita told the agents that the Chupacabra ate Maria's eyes and face.
3. What movie did Scully quote after talking to the migrant workers about Maria's death?

Answer: West Side Story

As they walked away from the camp, Scully sang, "Maria... Maria... I just met a girl named Maria." This is the refrain from a song in "West Side Story". Scully's theory of the case was the "oldest story in the world. Two men. One woman. Trouble."
4. What name had Eladio used when INS took him into custody?

Answer: Erik Estrada

When Mulder first came to Agent Lozano for help finding Eladio Buente, he'd read out of his files that they had Jose Feliciano, Juan Valdez, Cesar Chavez, and Placido Domingo in custody, but no Eladio Buente. Mulder understood what Lozano was demonstrating for him: none of the detainees used their real names.

When Mulder and Lozano got to Eladio in his cell, they found that the name he'd given was "Erik Estrada," but Lozano assured Mulder that Eladio was "no Erik Estrada." After Eladio had emphatically denied having killed Maria, though, Lozano changed his stance, saying "This guy's *better* than Erik Estrada."
5. Eladio spoke to a man about getting transport back to Mexico. This same man had brought him to the United States. What was this man's profession?

Answer: barber

The Barber reluctantly agreed but told Eladio he'd have to pay up front for the transport. The Barber later approached Mulder and Agent Lozano with information about Eladio's whereabouts. In the end, though, he was killed by his contact with Eladio.
6. What fungal condition had killed the bus driver?

Answer: athlete's foot

The yellow substance that Eladio was secreting acted as a catalyst for normally benign fungi. The bus driver had apparently touched Eladio, and his athlete's foot had multiplied and ravaged his entire body. The mycologist Scully consulted for the case told her that athlete's foot was unfairly overshadowed by the cockroach and had, itself, outlived "countless extermination efforts."
7. To get money to pay for passage back to Mexico, Eladio got himself hired for a construction day job. Where was the foreman when he died?

Answer: Porta Potty

When Soledad came to the site to look for Eladio, he opened the door of the Porta Potty, but found the foreman covered in fungus.
8. What had Eladio eaten at the market?

Answer: cashew nuts

Eladio had gone to the market to see Gabrielle, but she wasn't there. He wandered into the back and started helping himself to cashew nuts from the bulk snack containers. One of the employees caught him and Eladio ran off, knocking the display over on his way out.

The employee approached the mess and knelt down, picking up a moldy cashew nut. When Scully and Mulder arrived to arrest Soledad, they also found the employee, the toppled display, and the surrounding area covered in mold.
9. Where did Eladio go after seeing Gabrielle in her apartment?

Answer: migrant camp

Gabrielle told the agents that Eladio had gone back to Mexico so that he could hide his face, but Mulder deduced that Eladio would want to face his brother rather than hide. They ordered a Haz-Mat team and went to the migrant camp, where Agent Lozano had taken Soledad, and found Lozano shot and dead, but no trace of the brothers. The eyewitness accounts hardly clarified things.
10. Did Scully and Mulder find Eladio and Soledad?

Answer: no

They reported what they knew to Skinner, but were unable to present their suspects. Scully explained that "They have a way of being almost invisible." Mulder added, "The truth is, nobody cares."
