Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The elephant in the picture is the smaller of two elephant species. On which continent will you find it in the wild?

Answer: Asia

There are two kinds of elephants: African elephants and Asian elephants. African elephants are larger (8000 to 15,000 pounds), have larger ears, and both male and female have visible tusks. Asian elephants are smaller (6000-11000 pounds), have smaller ears, and only males usually have visible tusks. Elephants use their tusks to dig out food and water, lift things, and defend themselves. An elephant's trunk is so strong it can knock down trees and so agile it can pick up a single piece of straw. Because their tusks are made of ivory, many elephants are illegally killed by poachers.
2. The giant panda, beloved all over the world, is considered a "National Treasure" in which country?

Answer: China

In the wild, giant pandas live in the south-west mountain regions of China in damp forests between about 4000 and 11,000 feet. They require at least two types of bamboo and access to water. They generally spend 12 hours or more a day eating bamboo, and most of the rest of the time sleeping.
3. The giraffe is the tallest land animal. Approximately how tall is it at maturity?

Answer: 14-18 feet

Giraffes can weigh 1500 to 3000 pounds. Being herbivorous, giraffes eat only plants. Giraffes are so big and fast (they can run about 35 miles an hour for short distances), they do not have to hide from predators. Apart from humans, only lions and crocodiles hunt them. And giraffes can defend themselves with their hooves that can administer a fatal kick.
4. Which species of rhinoceros has the heaviest specimens?

Answer: White

The white rhino, found in Africa, can weigh as mush as 3,000-4,500 kg (6,600-9,900 lb). Rhinos delight in rolling in mud to protect themselves from sunburn and insects. A herbivore, it eats leaves and grass. The name "rhinoceros" comes from two Greek words, "rhino" (nose) and "ceros" (horn).

Although rhinos can live in the wild over 40 years, the survival of all rhinos is endangered by poachers.
5. Which species of tiger was extinct at the start of the 21st century?

Answer: Caspian

Three tiger species are extinct: the Caspian, the Balinese, and the Javan. There are six types of tigers left, all of which are extremely endangered. Approximate surviving numbers of tigers in the wild: Siberian (under 400); Bengal (under 2500); Indochinese (under 2500); Malayan (under 1400); Sumatran (under 400); and South China (probably extinct because the Chinese government in the 1950s ordered them to be destroyed as pests).
6. What is the generic name for this ugly carrion-eating bird?

Answer: Vulture

There are several species of vultures, all of which are scavengers who thrive on carrion. They usually eat as much as they can because they are never sure when they will be able to feed again. If they eat too much so they cannot fly, they just regurgitate some so they can take off.
7. The zebra is an equid, a member of the horse family. About how fast can a zebra run?

Answer: Up to 35 miles per hour

Not only are zebras fast, they enjoy superb hearing and can seriously injure a predator with a powerful kick. Zebras travel in herds, are herbivores, and are nomadic, going to where they can find grass and leaves to eat. Zebra stripes are unique to each zebra.
8. The common hippopotamus lives in lakes and rivers in the central part of Africa. About how long is the average hippo?

Answer: 10-16 feet

Common hippos range in size from 10+ to 16+ feet long, and 3000-3500 pounds. They spend most of the day wallowing in shallow water, coming out at night to graze for several hours and eat close to 90 pounds of food. They are extremely dangerous, and in one bite can chomp a crocodile in half. Adults have few, if any, natural predators, just humans.
9. What does the name "orangutan" mean?

Answer: Person of the forest

"Orangutan" means "person of the forest" from two Malay words, "orang" meaning "person" and "hutan" meaning "forest. They survive now only on Sumatra and Borneo. They spend most of their time in trees, easily swinging from branch to branch and tree to tree. Up to 60% of their diet is ripe fruit.

They also consume leaves, bark, honey, ants, termites, flowers, and bird eggs. In the wild, they can live up to 45 years.
10. The okapi is a relative of which animal?

Answer: Giraffe

The okapi is the only living relative of the giraffe. They exist in the wild only in a tropical rainforest in the north-east area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Generally solitary animals, they consume about 40-65 pounds of leaves and fruit each day.
