Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It has many names - most notably 'hard clam', 'round clam' and 'hard-shell clam', and even 'chowder clam'. What other name, that begins with 'Q', does this common North American clam carry?

Answer: Quahog

The name 'quahog' stems from the Narragansett word "poquauhock". It is commonly found along the east coast of North America all the way from Canada down to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

Different sizes of the quahog are marketed under different names, in addition to the names mentioned in the question. The smallest are called 'countnecks', and increasing in size from there are 'littlenecks', 'topnecks', 'cherrystones', and finally 'quahogs' or 'chowder clams'.

The quahog's binomial name is 'Mercenaria mercenaria', classified in the year 1758.
2. The red-thighed froglet is a native of Australia. It carries another name that describes the sound that it makes. What is it called?

Answer: Quacking frog

'Crinia georgiana' can be found in the southwestern part of Western Australia. They are very small, with the largest getting to be about 3 1/2 cm in length. Their bright red markings and distinctive duck-like calls make them easy to identify in the wild. It was classified in 1838.
3. Which of these 'Q' animals is an extinct relative of the zebra?

Answer: Quagga

The quagga was declared extinct in 1883, and only one quagga was ever immortalized in photographs - a mare in captivity in an Amsterdam Zoo - also believed to be the last quagga that lived. Upon her death on August 12th of 1883, the species was deemed extinct. The trinomial name of the species is 'Equus quagga quagga', and it was classified in 1785.
4. Horses come in many breeds, and there are even some that begin with the letter 'Q'. Which of these is NOT a breed of horse, but is actually a breed of cattle from China?

Answer: Qinchuan

The Qinchuan is a cattle breed, normally red in color, with a cervical hump. It is a draught breed of the Huanghuai group found in the Shaanxi region.

The American quarter horse got its name for its ability to sprint over short distances - in this case a quarter-mile. It is one of the most popular breeds of horse, with more than five million registered with the American Quarter Horse Association. The Quarab is a mix breed of horse developed from a cross between Arabian horses, American quarter horses, and Paint horses, while the Qatgani can be found in Afghanistan.
5. Native to New Guinea and Australia, what type of animal is a quoll?

Answer: Marsupial

Quolls are carnivorous marsupials, very like a marsupial version of a cat. Scientists have identified eight species of quoll, two of which are extinct and have only been determined through fossil records. The other six species are divided in their homes - two of them live in New Guinea, and the remaining four can be found in Australia and its island state of Tasmania.

The species was first classified in 1791, although the classification has been refined since then (in 1796 and again in 1800).
6. Of these four 'Q' animals, which one is not like the other?

Answer: Quillfish

The Quillfish is, of course, a fish. The other three (Quail, Quetzal, Quelea) are all birds. 'Ptilichthys goodei' is the binomial name of the quillfish, classified in 1881, and it is found in the North Pacific ocean. It is a long eel-like fish, growing up to 34 cm in length.

Quail is the name given to a number of different species of mid-sized birds within the Galliformes order. Quetzals are native to Central America, and the word 'quetzal' means 'large brilliant tail feather' in the Nahuatl language. Queleas are small, sparrow-like birds native to Africa. The red-billed quelea is considered to possibly be the most populous bird species in the world.
7. The quokka, native to Western Australia, is a spiny lizard similar to a bearded dragon.

Answer: False

The quokka is in fact a marsupial, similar to a wallaby, but significantly smaller. Rottnest Island off the coast of W.A. received its name because of the proliferation of quokka on the island. When Dutch Captain Willem de Vlamingh saw them, he considered them vermin, and called the island a 'rottnest', which translates from the Dutch as 'rat's nest'.

The binomial name of the quokka is 'Setonix brachyurus', classified in 1830.
8. Also known as 'kleine maräne', what kind of animal is a quietschbükers?

Answer: Fish

'Coregonus lucinensis' were classified in 1933 and are found in Northern Germany, specifically within Lake Breiter Luzin. The silver fish are part of the Salmonidae family, which include salmon, trout, chars, freshwater whitefishes, and graylings.
9. This animal is very similar to a skunk, complete with white stripes and the ability to spray in defence. Native to Chile, what is the name of this member of the Mustelidae family?

Answer: Quique

Where the quique differs from a skunk in coloration is the upper body. While the legs and nose are black, the body of a quique is yellow-grey with black spots. Instead of a single white stripe down its back, the quique has white stripes on either flank.
Quadrisectus and queen malachite are both insects, while a quetzalcoatlus is an extinct flying reptile from the late Cretaceous.
10. Known in some areas as a quill pig, the more common name for this animal comes from the Middle French 'porc espin', which means 'spiny pig'. What animal is it?

Answer: Porcupine

The Porcupine is the third largest rodent, behind the capybara and beaver. There are 29 different species within the suborder 'Hystricomorpha', and they range from the Americas to Africa to Southern Asia.
