Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This popular aquarium fish, with the binomial name of Zebrasoma flavescens, was first described by naturalist Edward Turner Bennett in 1828. By what common name is it known?

Answer: Yellow tang

Yellow tangs can be found in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Japan, and can actually grow quite large - up to 20 cm (7.9 in) in length! They also change colour, depending on the time of day, becoming a brighter yellow during the day, and fading somewhat during the night while also presenting a brown patch in the middle with a white stripe.
2. Banana slugs can be green, brown or white, but it is their yellow variant that gave rise to the 'banana' moniker. On which continent are banana slugs found?

Answer: North America

There are four species within the genus Ariolimax:

California banana slug (Ariolimax californicus)
Pacific banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus)
Slender banana slug (Ariolimax dolichophallus)
Banana slug (Ariolimax costaricensis)

The first three species of banana slug on this list are found in the western coastal regions of North America, while the fourth is found in Costa Rica in Central America.
3. Yellowjackets are a type of wasp from the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula that can be found around the globe. They are especially valued for their flavourful honey production.

Answer: False

Yeah, no. Yellowjackets do not produce honey. They are predatory wasps who are important for being predators of pest insects, but they can become aggressive when bothered, so they are best to just avoid.

Yellowjackets have lance-like barbed stingers that they will sting with repeatedly... they are not limited to one sting like some bee species. Their venom can affect humans differently, but it is only dangerous to someone with an allergy.
4. The Panamanian golden frog is actually a toad, but that doesn't stop it from being a vibrant yellow colour. Now critically endangered, is this protected species in the wild found only in Panama?

Answer: Yes

Yes, the Panamanian golden frog is endemic to Panama (it is a national symbol), but it is so critically endangered, that scientists believe it may actually be extinct in the wild and only specimens in captivity still exist.

Like many tropical frogs and toads, the Panamanian golden frog has a number of toxins, and these will affect anyone who comes into contact with one, if not protected. The toxins are quite powerful, affecting respiratory and circulatory function, causing seizures, and possibly death, if untreated.
5. Found in the southern regions of the African continent, the yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) oddly has another common name using a different colour descriptor. What is it?

Answer: Red meerkat

There are a number of subspecies of yellow mongoose, and they will range in fur colour from grey to a reddish-yellow. And while the yellow mongoose may share a tunnel system with meerkats, they are not, in fact, meerkats. Even so, they have managed to earn the second, albeit inaccurate, name.

Yellow mongooses enjoy a diet of insects and small animals (and eggs) as well as fruits and nuts. But they can be the food of birds of prey, snakes and jackals, too, so they have to be careful.
6. There were a lot of yellow birds to pick from for this quiz. What is the common name of this one, endemic to the whole of North America and having the binomial name of Setophaga petechia?

Answer: Yellow warbler

Warblers are a popular species of songbird with over 50 varieties to be found in North America, but the yellow warbler is generally easily spotted due to its brilliant hue, and by the fact that it can be found in every corner of the continent, including the Caribbean islands and north up to Alaska and the Canadian territories.

An interesting fact about the yellow warbler is how it responds to the brown-headed cowbird's invasive laying of eggs in their nests... yellow warblers will build another layer above the parasitic bird's eggs. This has been witnessed with up to six tiers of nesting to deal with the problem.
7. The Burmese python (of Southeast Asia) is one of the largest snakes on earth, reaching up to seven meters (23 feet) or more in length! Normally a dark brown and black snake, they also come in a yellow and white variant, called the ________ Burmese python. What word correctly fits the name?

Answer: Albino

Python bivittatus makes for a popular terrarium pet, due to its easygoing nature. They are often bred to produce different colour variations, and the albino Burmese python is especially sought after. In reality, it is not a true albino, but could more accurately be called an amelanistic Burmese python.

In the wild, Burmese pythons are nocturnal hunters who enjoy constricting their prey, typically birds and mammals. They live in the rainforest and can be found both on the ground and in trees.
8. These crabs of the Ocypodinae subfamily are generally a pale yellow in colour that allow them to blend into their sandy surroundings, giving them what spooky name?

Answer: Ghost crab

Ghost crabs can be found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, wherever there are sandy beaches for them to dig in. They are nocturnal creatures (which makes them even harder to see), and will dig down to 1.2 meters (four feet) to find the cool, damp sand. They are scavengers, but will not say no to small animals, turtle eggs, and clams if they get the chance.
9. The golden lion tamarin is a small New World monkey whose fur ranges in colour from dark yellow to an orangey-red. The species is endangered and can only be found in the rainforest of one country in South America. They probably can't speak Portuguese, but if they did, they could tell you... which country?

Answer: Brazil

Leontopithecus rosalia is the binomial name of the golden lion tamarin, which is one of four species in the Leontopithecus genus. The others are all darker in their colour scheme.

These small primates are only about 30 cm long (one foot) in the body with a lengthy 45 cm (1.5 feet) tail. They are diurnal arboreal creatures who rarely come down to the ground, even sleeping in tree hollows.

At one point (around the mid 1990s), it was believed that there were no more than about 400 golden lion tamarins left in the wild, but conservation efforts have brought the species back from the brink, and they are now in the thousands again - within three small areas of southeastern Brazil that comprise less than 5% of their original habitat.
10. This beautiful yellow butterfly can be found throughout the Americas. Its curious name comes from an element known for its yellow colour: Cloudless ________. What element completes the name?

Answer: Sulphur

The cloudless sulphur (Phoebis sennae) is a mid-size, bright yellow butterfly, reaching a wingspan of 63-78 mm (2.5-3.1 inches) across. As caterpillars, they prefer partridge pea plants, sennas, clovers, and legumes for their foodsource.

While cloudless sulphurs can be found in North America as far north as Ontario, Canada, but they are most common in the southern United States and south through Central America and South America down to Argentina.
