Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In just mere seconds, a meerkat can dig through a quantity of sand equal to its own weight.

Answer: True

The meerkat uses its tail for balance as well as a signal when it perches at the opening of its den made of holes dug in the sand. The homes of meerkats are built rather quickly for an animal of its size and proportion. Meerkats are native to Africa and naturally immune to scorpion and snake posion so they don't necessarily have to run home when encountering scorpions and snakes.
2. Domestic/House cats purr when breathing in as well as out-tigers only do it while breathing in.

Answer: False

In 1900, the tiger population in India was estimated at 40,000 to 50,000. By 1972, it had dropped to 1,850! An excellent conservation program has increased it to over 4,000 in population.
3. The koala never drinks because it gets all of the liquid it needs from eucalyptus leaves.

Answer: False

"Koala" is the Aborigine word for "no water." Koalas are only native to Australia, unless you count your local zoos. According to sources, the Koala does drink water, it was just that early settlers never saw them drinking. They drink dew drops from leaves, rain that collects in tree hollows, and sometimes they even get out of the trees when they need a drink.
4. The Blue Crab is the world's largest crab.

Answer: False

The world's largest crab is the giant spider crab, which lives at great depths off the coast of Japan. Its shell is only 12 inches across, usually, but its legs can stretch as wide as 6 feet.
5. A bush baby's hind legs are longer than its front legs.

Answer: True

This is to help in jumping from limb to limb. The longest recorded jump so far from tree to tree that was recorded was 23 feet. Because the bush baby's call sounds like the sounds of a small child, British explorers gave it its English name.
6. There is not a bird known as a Blue-Footed Booby.

Answer: False

As silly as it sounds, there is such a bird. It's a goose-sized tropical seabird that breeds on islands off the Pacific coast. They can live up to 17+ years.
7. When threatened, a boa constrictor's hiss can be heard 100 feet away.

Answer: True

I would have never guessed! That is loud. Its numbers are decreasing due to habitat destruction and leather trades.
8. When migrating, the Monarch butterfly can only travel up to 48 miles a day.

Answer: False

Believe it or not, in a day's time, monarchs can travel up to 80 miles a day when migrating. It flies at about 11 miles per hour and travels 16-17 feet above the ground.
9. In certain species of fiddler crab, the male has a bigger right claw.

Answer: True

Yes. This is to attract females and to intimidate other males. The enlarged claw is usually about an inch bigger. The fiddler crab's body is about an inch long and the normal claw on the left side is about 1/2 an inch long, if that. Fiddler crabs like to live near water and often you'll see them in boating towns or beaches. They live in tiny holes in the sand.
10. The difference between the Tortoise Shell coloration of domestic/house cat and the Calico coloration of domestic/house cat is that the Tortoise Shell doesn't have large white spots.

Answer: True

Unlike Calicos, Torties have no large white spots. They can be a mix of browns and oranges or black and grays-sometimes a mix of all colors. Tortoise Shells are less common to find than Calicos, but this doesn't mean they are very rare. Most Calicos have most of their body in white-the torso, underbelly, etc.
