Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From team member Amanda77586, whose French mother used to play French songs for her: If you were alive in the 1970s (or even if you weren't born yet) chances are you've probably heard the cheesy pop song "Seasons in the Sun", which was a hit for Terry Jacks in 1974. Who wrote and sang the original French-language version of this song?

Answer: Jacques Brel

The French title was "Le Moribond" (The dying man) and was a rather dark and depressing song. It was written and recorded by Belgian singer/songwriter Brel in 1962 and was originally translated into English by American singer/songwriter/actor/poet Rod McKuen in 1964.

The first recording of the lighter English-language version was by Bob Shane of the folk group The Kingston Trio. Supposedly the Beach Boys were offered the song and passed on it before Jacks recorded his hit version.
2. From team member hapagirl1103, who loves both music and wordplay, this question is in the form of a cryptic wordplay game: Can you guess the name of this late 1970s - early 1980s rock band from the clue below? North Pole resident is on a first name basis with Quasimodo's sweetie.

Answer: Santa Esmeralda

Santa Esmeralda was a studio band formed by French producers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were known primarily for their "Latinized" cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (written by Bennie Benjamin and originally performed by The Animals who took it to Number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart). Santa Esmeralda took it to Number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
3. From team member hosertodd: Which musical group were Seals and Crofts not a part of?

Answer: Danny and the Juniors

Jim Seals and Dash Crofts joined the Champs in the late 1950s along with Glen Campbell. The three left the Champs in 1962 to form the band Glen Campbell and the GCs. The band only lasted two years. Seals then joined the Dawnbreakers and was eventually joined by Crofts. The band broke up in 1969 and the two men formed the duo Seals and Crofts. Their soft-rock sound brought them success in the 1970s.

Danny and the Juniors were contemporaries of the Champs, but had no association with Seals or Crofts. They are known for their late 1950s hit, "At the Hop".
4. From team member amandalavender: Before Blind Faith, Traffic, and his solo career, which British Invasion group included a very young Steve Winwood?

Answer: The Spencer Davis Group

Steve Winwood (or Stevie, as he was called at the time) joined the Spencer Davis Group when he was only 15 years old. He then went on to join Traffic and Blind Faith before going on to a solo career.
5. From team member jensping: What hard rock group's drummer lost his left arm from a freak car accident early in his career?

Answer: Def Leppard

Rick Allen, Def Leppard's drummer, lost his left arm when he was thrown from his car in 1984. He was found in shock, wandering by the site of the accident, saying: "I'm a famous rock drummer." Using an electronic drum kit that he helped develop, Rick resumed playing after his recovery, and the band continued on to international success.
6. From team member Dreamweave4: What was Harry Chapin's only number one hit single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart?

Answer: Cat's in the Cradle

"Cat's in the Cradle" hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the U.S. in December 1974. A cover version recorded by Ugly Kid Joe hit Number Seven on the UK Singles Chart many years later.

U.S. Billboard Hot 100 rankings for the other three Chapin songs are as follows:
"Sequel" - number 23
"Taxi" - number 24
"W*O*L*D" - number 36
7. From team member breezin: Which of the following musicians has NOT been knighted by the Queen of England?

Answer: John Bonham

Elton John was knighted on December 30, 1997. Paul McCartney became Sir Paul on March 11, 1997. On December 12, 2003, Mick Jagger was knighted by Prince Charles.

John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, drummer for Led Zeppelin, passed away on September 25, 1980. Even though Encyclopedia Britannica describes him as "the perfect model for all hard rock drummers that have followed him", he was never awarded knighthood.
8. From team member TellyAddict10, our resident expert on musicals: In the musical "Les Miserables", a song is sung by two principal characters, Javert and Jean Valjean, called "Confrontation". Which of these statements is revealed by Javert in this song?

Answer: Javert was born inside a jail.

The lyrics that reveal this information are "You know nothing of Javert / I was born inside a jail / I was born with scum like you / I am from that gutter too." Javert is the anti-villain of the musical, blurring the lines of good and evil.
9. From team member giraffekins: Which Madonna song earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records in 2007?

Answer: Hung Up

"Hung Up" went to Number One in 45 countries, including the UK, Australia, Russia, France, South Africa and Italy. Oddly enough, it only went to Number seven in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is listed in the 2007 edition of the "Guinness Book of World Records" as record-holder for the Number One single in the most countries.

The song was released in October 2005 as the first single from the album "Confessions on a Dance Floor".
10. And another from team member giraffekins: Who wrote the Bangles hit song "Manic Monday"?

Answer: Prince

Prince had originally written the song for Apollonia 6 in 1984, but it never made it onto their album. Prince, who reportedly had a crush on Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs, offered the song to the Bangles in 1986. He used the pseudonym "Christopher" on this recording.

The Bangles recorded cover songs by Simon and Garfunkel ("Hazy Shade of Winter"), Alex Chilton ("September Gurls") and Jules Shear ("If She Knew What She Wants"), but those songs were recorded by those artists prior to the Bangles.
