Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many species of bear are there?

Answer: 8

There is eight types of existing bears. These are the brown bear, American black bear, panda, polar bear, spectacled bear, sun bear, sloth bear and Asiatic black bear. There were more bears in prehistoric times which have now become extinct.
2. What is the dietary type of brown, black, sun and spectacled bears?

Answer: Omnivorous

Brown, black, sun and spectacled bears are all omnivorous, although the spectacled bear's diet is mainly fruit and only 5 to 7% meat. Polar bears are carnivorous, sloth bears are insectivorous and pandas are herbivorous.
3. All bears hunt humans.

Answer: False

Most bears do not hunt humans and most usually don't attack if you encounter them. If you are near a bear, do not run away! Running triggers their instinct to chase. Just lie down still on your belly, put your arms over your head, and the bear might lose interest.
4. Koalas are bears.

Answer: False

Contrary to popular belief koalas are not bears, they are marsupials! The name "koala bear" is a false name and there are no bears native to Australia. They are simply called koalas.
5. What continents do bears inhabit?

Answer: Europe, Asia and the Americas

Bears inhabit all the continents except Australia, Africa and Antarctica. The Atlas bear used to inhabit Africa, but it became extinct in the 1870s.
6. Do bears only eat honey?

Answer: No

Unlike in Winnie the Pooh, bears don't just eat honey. Although they are attracted to it, they don't eat it often and mostly dine on fish, meat, fruit, grass and tubers, among other things.
7. Brown bears only live in North America.

Answer: False

As well as North America, subspecies of brown bear also inhabit Asia, Eurasia and Europe.
8. What species of bear lives in Mongolia and is on the road to extinction?

Answer: Gobi bear

The Gobi bear (a subspecies of brown bear inhabiting the Gobi desert of Mongolia) is the rarest bear in the world, with less than 50 surviving adults in the wild and the population is quickly declining.
9. The Tibetan blue bear is often mistaken for the yeti.

Answer: True

The Tibetan blue bear (a subspecies of brown bear inhabiting the eastern Tibetan Plateau) might be a possible culprit for sightings of the Yeti, a mythical white bigfoot-like creature of the Himalayan mountains. A 1960 expedition to search for evidence of the Yeti found two clumps of fur, identified by local people as yeti fur. Scientific testing showed the fur was actually from the Tibetan blue bear.
10. The Kermode bear is a subspecies of American black bear.

Answer: True

The Kermode bear is a subspecies of American black bear, know for 1/10 of their population having white-cream coats. This is because of a double recessive gene unique to their subspecies, not because they are albino.
