Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service organized the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention (CFFP) Program in what year ?

Answer: 1942

At the beginning of WWII, Americans feared that an enemy attack or sabotage could destroy our forest resources at a time when wood products were greatly needed. Timber was a primary commodity for battleships, gunstocks, and packing crates for military transport. The CFFP encouraged citizens to make a personal effort to prevent forest fires.
2. Which very popular Walt Disney character was used on an initial anti-wildfire poster ?

Answer: Bambi

The success of this poster demonstrated that an animal of the forest was the best messenger to promote the prevention of accidental forest fires.
3. In 1944, a noted illustrator of animals worked with the description given by the Forest Service and the War Advertising Council to paint the forest fire prevention bear. Who was this illustrator ?

Answer: Albert Staehle

August 9, 1944 is Smokey Bear's official birthday. The bear was named 'Smokey' after 'Smokey' Joe Martin, who was Assistant Chief of the New York City Fire Department from 1919 to 1930. But it was not until the 1965 campaign and the work of Chuck Kuderna, that Smokey's image evolved into the one we know today.
4. Smokey's living history began early in 1950, when a burned cub survived a human-caused fire which ravaged 17,000 acres in the Lincoln National Forest near Capitan, New Mexico. The cub was briefly named....?

Answer: Hotfoot Teddy

Soon his caretakers began calling him Smokey Bear after the poster created almost six years earlier.
5. After being nursed back to health, Smokey went to live at what zoo ?

Answer: National Zoo in Washington, DC

Smokey quickly became a celebrity ! By 1952, having become so popular with school children as well as citizens of the world, Congress passed into law a bill governing the commercializaiton of the name and image of Smokey Bear.
6. On April 29, 1964, Smokey Bear was given his own....?

Answer: zip code

Smokey was given his own zip code in Washington, DC - 20252 - because of the large amount of mail he was receiving !
7. A female bear named Goldie was sent to the zoo to become Smokey's mate in 1962. Were any cubs ever born to Smokey and Goldie ?

Answer: No

The efforts failed and an adopted son was sent to the zoo so the aged bear could retire on May 2, 1975. The original Smokey Bear died in 1976. His remains were returned to Capitan and rest beneath a stone marker in Smokey Bear Historical State Park. The adopted son carried on until he died in 1990, and the living symbol was laid to rest.
8. In 1984, an artist for the Forest Service, named Rudy Wendelin, created the art for which commemorative item for the Smokey Bear 40th Anniversary?

Answer: postage stamp

The twenty cent postage stamp depicted a bear cub clinging to a burnt tree with the famous Smokey Bear emblem as a background. This was the first time the U.S. Postal Service issued a postage stamp honoring an individual animal.
9. A study was made of school children in the US and selected foreign countries using familiar slogans to be finished when only the first few words were given. With, 'ONLY YOU', more children were able to complete Smokey Bear's motto than any other presented. What is the rest of the motto...?

Answer: CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES

10. Smokey Bear has a middle name. True or False ?

Answer: False

False. It is NOT 'Smokey the Bear'. This is confusing because the song is titled 'Smokey the Bear'. There is no good explanation for this other than 'Smokey the Bear' fits better with the tune than 'Smokey Bear'. '...prowlin' and a growlin' and a sniffin' the air.

He can find a fire before it starts to flame, that's why they call him Smokey, that was how he got his name.' Please..don't play with matches!
