Lives hidden in the marshes of large parts of Eastern and Northern Europe. Some you will see in Turkey as well. The crane is an old Japanese symbol for a long and prosperous life.
2. Crex crex

Answer: Corncrake

Rather common bird in most of Europe, except for the northern parts of Scandinavia and the whole of Spain and Italy. It lives on insects, spiders, snails and some seeds. The female corncrake is on her own when she is brooding her eight to twelve eggs.
3. Porzana porzana

Answer: Spotted Crake

This bird, with the size of a starling, has a brown back with dark stripes and a blue-grey face. It has two broods in a year and lives on various insects, worms and molluscs.
4. Vanellus vanellus

Answer: Lapwing

In Holland this wader derives its name from its call: Kieviet. It lives on worms and insects. Here in Holland it has been a long tradition to find and present the first lapwing egg of the season, especially in the northern province of Friesland.
5. Gallinago gallinago

Answer: Common snipe

As big as a thrush, this wader has short legs but a long and straight bill, suitable for collecting food in marshes and moors. The common snipe has worms and insect larvae on its menu.
6. Limosa limosa

Answer: Black-tailed godwit

In Holland this popular bird is called Grutto, after its call. It has long legs and a long straight bill. It feeds on insects, worms and snails.
7. Himantopus himantopus

A wader with long, red legs. In flight you will see those legs stretched behind, virtually doubling the length of this bird.
8. Bubo bubo

Answer: Eagle owl

Europe's biggest owl, even bigger than a buzzard. Except for the British isles, Denmark, the Benelux and the western part of France, this bird is seen all over Europe. The Eagle Owl is recognizable for its earplumes. It's active at night.
9. Apus apus

Answer: Swift

Maestro in the air, this dark colored bird can sleep on its sickle shaped wing, would you believe. Another remarkable thing about the swift is that it can hold itself against a wall, which is necessary as it likes to breed in buildings, especially in a roof space. It likes to eat flying insects.
10. Riparia riparia

Answer: Sand martin

Literally translated "Bank martin" in Dutch, it's clear where you will find this smallest of martins. At the end of a long dug out tunnel in a steep riverbank, it has its nest. Like all other martins and swallows, this bird can fly! It eats flying insects.
