Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If a cheetah can't catch anything, will it normally scavenge?

Answer: No

Cheetahs are one of the many animal species who almost never scavenge.
2. Cheetah claws can't retract. This is a very useful feature, but what does it do?

Answer: It gives the cheetah more traction

Claws that don't retract give the cheetah more traction on the ground. More traction means more speed, and the cheetah is built for speed.
3. The king cheetah is a subspecies of cheetah.

Answer: False

The king cheetah is actually the production of inbreeding. The King cheetah has blurred markings which sometimes form into stripes.
4. Cheetah cubs have blue fur on their backs which they gradually lose as they get older. What purpose does this fur serve?

Answer: Camouflage

That bluish fur matches the color of small blue flowers on the savannah. As they grow older and it gets closer to the dry season, the blue flowers disappear, and the blue fur is no longer needed.
5. Can cheetahs climb?

Answer: Yes

They generally climb termite mounds, but they do go up an occasional tree.
6. Where is the largest concentration of wild cheetahs?

Answer: Namibia

Namibia in southern Africa has the largest population of wild cheetahs, mostly because people there are understanding cheetah conservation more. An estimate of 1,200 cheetahs live in Namibia.
7. Has the cheetah ever attacked people?

Answer: Yes

There are cases on record where captive cheetahs have attacked their handlers.
8. Why don't cheetahs fight other predators when they try to take their food?

Answer: All of these

Cheetahs simply aren't built for fighting. Another reason they give it up is because they are just too tired after running so fast. Cheetahs would rather wait than risk getting ripped to shreds by, say, a lion.
9. In which continents can you find wild cheetahs?

Answer: Africa and Asia

You can find wild cheetahs in several countries in Africa and Asia.
10. What are the cheetah's "tear marks" for?

Answer: To reduce sun glare

The color black absorbs light, so by having black "tear marks" down its face the cheetah can see its prey better (who wants to be blinded by glare when you're trying to chase something?)
