Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many taxa (species and subspecies) of lemurs exist?

Answer: 68

Most people do not know that there are now 9 Microcebus species: Microcebus murinus, rufus, myoxinus, berthae, ravelobensis, tavaratra, jollyae, bearae, and mittermeieri. More and more species are being discovered every year.
2. Which of these callitrichids usually gives birth to singletons (as opposed to twins)?

Answer: Goeldi's Monkey

These animals are all in the family Callitrichidae. These primates are small South American monkeys. Goeldi's Monkeys, also known as Callimicos, do not normally twin. Additionally, their dentition is different from other callitrichids. They retain the 3rd molar (2:1:3:3).
3. Which of these species are pair-bonded? (Monogamous mates).

Answer: Indri

The others all live in multi-male/multi-female groups.
4. Which of these species is a graminivore (eats grasses)?

Answer: Gelada Baboon

Gelada baboons live in the grasslands of Ethiopia and eat 90% or more grasses. Their arms are longer than their legs so they can pick grass while they are sitting down.
5. Which of these is not an odd-nosed colobine?

Answer: Aotus trivirgatus

Aotus (the night monkey) is neither odd-nosed nor a colobine. It is in the family Cebidae, subfamily Aotinae. Odd nosed colobines are those Asian primates with, well, odd looking noses. Their genera include those species from the genera Rhinopithecus (the Chinese snub-nosed monkeys), Nasalis (proboscis monkey), Simias (pig tailed langur) and Pygathrix (douc langurs).
6. Which is not a subspecies of Chimpanzee?

Answer: Pan troglodytes abelii

Abelii is the species name for the Sumatran Orang Utan.
7. Gibbons (genus Hylobates) are more cohesive (close family) than siamangs (genus Symphalangus)?

Answer: False

Siamangs are considered to have a more closely knit family unit than are gibbons. Although once considered to be gibbons under the genus Hylobates, siamangs are now classified under their own genus Symphalangus. Their social structure, feeding ecology and size is different enough from other Hylobatids to merit their own genus.

They are still classified under the same family as gibbons, Hylobatidae.
8. Which of these features is NOT a unique feature shared by all living primates?

Answer: Bicornuate uterus

Although prosimians have a bicornuate uterus, it is not shared by other primates. Petrosal bullae are found in the skulls of all primates, and four chambered hearts are found in all mammals.
9. Which of these primates is considered a seed predator (eats seeds and nuts)?

Answer: Pithecia pithecia

Pithecia pithecia (white faced saki monkey) eats seeds. Trachypithecus obscurus (spectacled langur) is a folivore(eats leaves), Pongo pygmaeus (Bornean Orang utan) is mainly a frugivore (eats fruits), and Loris tardigradus (Slender loris) eats leaves and insects.
10. Which of these is considered to be the most divergent of all primates?

Answer: Daubentonia madagascariensis

Daubentonia, the aye-aye of Madagascar, was first thought to be a species of rodent on account of its continuously growing incisors. Nasalis larvatus is the Proboscis monkey from Borneo, Cheirogaleus medius is the fat-tailed dwarf lemur from Madagascar, and Brachyteles arachnoides is the Muriqui, or woolly spider monkey from Brazil.
