Leapin' Lemurs! Trivia Quiz

We loved the lemurs in the movie "Madagascar" but let's learn a little more about the tiny mammals. The quiz will be more an entrance level test on the basics of lemurs and not a hardcore biology examination.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lemurs are classed as Mammalia and belong to which of the following orders?

Answer: Primates

Lemurs are primates and related to monkeys. They fall into the prosimian category of primates. Their phylum is Chordata. Prosimians are considered more ancestral than monkeys and are distinguished by smaller brains and longer snouts. The Chordata phylum means that the animals have a notocord, a vertebrae structure in the case of lemurs.
2. Lemurs can be found in both the forest areas and dry scrublands of which geographical location?

Answer: Madagascar

The island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa, is the only location where lemurs are found. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus named the genus Lemur in the tenth edition of "Systema Naturae". While they exist in the wild only in Madagascar, there is evidence of fossils being found in Pakistan dating back to 30 million year ago.
3. Lemurs are primarily herbivores, but some species also eat insects.

Answer: True

The majority of lemurs eat primarily fruit, berries, buds, leaves, sap, and bark, but some species supplement their diets with insects, eggs, and small animals as needed. Their diets are adaptive but they are primarily herbivores.
4. Ring-tailed lemurs average a lifespan of what in the wild?

Answer: 16 to 19 years

Some species of lemurs, like the mouse lemur, only live to age seven, typically. The ring-tailed lemur is one of the longest living lemur species and typically averages between 16 to 19 years in the wild. Of course, if they are in managed care, with a lack of predators and good meals, some have lived to be 30 years old.
5. Which of the following is NOT a species of lemur?

Answer: Fan tailed lemur

The fan tailed lemur is the imposter. There is, however, a fat tailed dwarf lemur. This species of lemur stores fat in their rumps and in the ends of their tails for the hot, dry season when food is scarce. They can survive for up to seven months on the food stored in their bodies.
6. Which specie of lemur is the largest in terms of weight?

Answer: Indri

The Indri is a lemur that is also known as the babakoto. They are only found in Madagascar. They have long limbs, black and white fur, and typically have a maximum weight of 9.5 kg or 21 lbs. The length of an Indri lemur is 60-90 cm (24-35 inches). They are active during the day and live in trees. There have been reports of a record four-foot Indri that weighed 33 lbs (15 kg).
7. The black lemur avoids malaria by chewing on what small creature?

Answer: Millipedes

Lemurs chew on millipedes to create extra saliva. They then take the saliva and rub it all over their fur. This saliva contains a compound containing cyanide that wards off mosquitos, the primary source of malaria. In addition, the chewing of millipedes puts the lemur into a sort of psychedelic high similar to humans eating exotic mushrooms.
8. Which fact about lemur communication is NOT true?

Answer: They can write sand messages with their tail

Lemurs are able to make sounds. The ring-tailed lemur alone can make up to 28 sounds including chirps, howls, and change the sounds based on the predator in the area. They are able to pierce trees to obtain a scent and rub this on their wrists or tails to claim territory or emit to predators. Tail raising is a well-known lemur trait when a group of lemurs get together in the wild.
9. Large lemur species are crepuscular, which means they are active when?

Answer: Twilight

Crepuscular means "relating to twilight" and this is appropriate for lemurs in general. The terms "diurnal" and "nocturnal" behavior, refer to animals who are most active during the daytime hours or during night, respectfully. Some smaller lemur species do enjoy sunlight but, as a whole, lemurs thrive in the twilight hours.
10. Which of the following is NOT a species of lemur?

Answer: Tamarin

Tamarins are small squirrel sized monkeys that can be found in South and Central America. Remember lemurs are only found in Madagascar and tamarins are not part of their order. Tamarins are part of the Callitrichidae family.
