Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Despite being a carnivore, the majority of a red panda's diet consists of what?

Answer: bamboo

The red panda is generally considered a living fossil, as there are no living animals that it is particularly closely related to. Though not particularly related to the giant panda, both are big fans of bamboo. Despite their preference for bamboo, red pandas are carnivores and will on occasion eat small animals (along with other plants). Red pandas live in southwest China and surrounding areas.

They generally inhabit temperate forests, and their markings help camouflage against a backdrop of mossy trees.

Many of their populations are fragmented and they are classified as vulnerable. They are protected in all countries they are endemic to.
2. In medieval times, a male red deer over the age of five was known as a what?

Answer: hart

Red deer are native to Europe along with parts of Asia and northern Africa. In Europe, in medieval times, a male red deer over the age of 5 was known as a hart. Harts were seen as noble animals considered to be the kings of beasts and hunting one was a thing of great prestige.

When a hart was found, a quest would be formed and a party hunted it down with dogs or by bow and arrow. Harts can be found in mythological stories, like Norse myth, and many modern names (Hartford, Hartley) derive from its name.

In modern times, red deer occupy a smaller range than in centuries past but are still quite common.
3. Due to a very fast reproductive cycle, female red kangaroos spend most of their adult lives being what?

Answer: pregnant

Red kangaroos are the largest kangaroos and the largest living marsupials. They are quite strong and have little to fear in terms of predators. Those foolish enough to attack a red kangaroo are generally attacked with its strong legs, or drowned if they pursue it into water. Like all marsupials, red kangaroos are born quickly and with little development.

It is because a kangaroo is born after a month that red kangaroos are constantly pregnant. A red kangaroo can raise multiple generations of offspring at once, but can temporarily freeze its pregnancy if resources are scarce.

It takes about 7 months for a joey to leave its mother's pouch, and a few more months to be permanently on its own.
4. As with most animal horns, the horns of a bongo are made of what?

Answer: keratin

Despite its name, the bongo is a large forest antelope from the tropical regions of Africa. Both male and female bongos have horns, and as with most animals, they are made of keratin. A bongo's horns are hollow with a single twist and males usually have larger horns than females. Females usually have brighter coats than males, and eastern bongos usually have brighter coats than western bongos. Though the coloring in a bongo's coat is quite vivid, it can rub off fairly easily. Bongos have a sharp sense of hearing, are very timid, and can flee very quickly even through rainforests.
5. Which part of a red ruffed lemur is similar in structure to a comb and is used extensively in grooming?

Answer: teeth

A toothcomb is a set of teeth that some mammals possess that is arranged a lot like a comb, and is normally used for grooming. A red ruffed lemur's toothcomb is made of the incisors and canines on its lower jaw. Lemurs love to groom each other, and the toothcomb is used extensively in grooming. Red ruffed lemurs usually live in small groups, and forage for food.

They are fond of fruit and figs in particular. The tail of a red ruffed lemur is longer than the rest of its body. Morphologically, red ruffed lemurs are similar to black-and-white ruffed lemurs, and can understand their calls.
6. The gray squirrel is a serious competitor of the red squirrel due to the latter's relative inability to digest what?

Answer: acorns

What gray squirrels are to North America, red squirrels are to Europe and Russia. They are small, common, arboreal rodents. While not in danger of going extinct, large declines of red squirrels -- which correlate with the introduction of gray squirrels -- have been observed in parts of Europe. Gray squirrels do not directly antagonize red squirrels, but are usually able to outcompete them because they can digest acorns much more efficiently, and because the squirrel parapoxvirus does not effect them.

The red squirrel's fur color changes by season. During winter, it will turn gray.
7. Believe it or not, a fox is most successful at catching prey when it does which of the following?

Answer: align direction to the northeast

The red fox is very good at hunting out small animals that seem to be hidden, even under snow. The thing is, its uncanny accuracy is on show only when it attacks from a northeast (or polar opposite -- southwest) direction. Pouncing from other directions generally fails.

The reason for its unusual success is uncertain, but is suspected to be due to some sort of magnetic sense. The red fox is a large and common fox. It adapts easily to most environments, and that has actually made it an incredibly invasive pest in some places like Australia. People commonly hunt it for its fur, which is usually red but can come in many other colors too.
8. Because they are related to dogs, dholes are easy to tame and domesticate.

Answer: False

Do not pet a dhole any more than you would a dingo. While somewhat related to dogs, they are wild dogs in every sense of the word, and most dholes are nearly impossible to tame (the very young are fairly tame, but only while they remain young). Dholes have beautiful red fur and despite being dog-like, they have physical characteristics similar to those of foxes and cats.

In prehistoric times, dholes lived in Europe and North America, but in modern times they are only found in southeast Asia. Competition pressure from other predators along with human persecution and canid diseases have made the dhole an endangered species.
9. The red river hog is usually found close to swamps or rivers in the rainforests of which continent?

Answer: Africa

The red river hog is a wild pig almost always found in the rainforests of Africa. It was once believed to be an orange/red variety of bushpig, but the two are now classified as different species. Most of its body is a bright red color, though the face usually has black and white markings, and a white strip runs along its spine. Piglets tend to be drab in color for camouflage purposes. Boars have small, sharp tusks, and can aggressively defend their harems from carnivores. Like many pigs, red river hogs are social animals.

They are also good swimmers, and can dive for brief periods of time.
10. If one were to search for an orangutan in the wild, where would be the best place to look?

Answer: a nest in a tree

Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes, and spend the vast majority of their lives in trees. They are well-adapted for an arboreal lifestyle, with very long limbs, with hands and feet that are permanently curled. The red color of their fur is believed to be for camouflage, either to blend in with muddy water in their habitat, or to make it difficult to see them from the forest floor.

They are able to grasp objects tightly with their hands and feet, and are adept at arboreal locomotion. Orangutans are very intelligent but very endangered. Major threats include habitat loss, hunting for meat, and capture for the illegal pet trade.
