Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are several distinctive characteristics that separate the Pembroke from the Cardigan. One of them is the tail. Which of them has a US breed standard requiring the tail to be docked?

Answer: Pembroke

The other differences are in the ears. The Cardigan's ears are more rounded, while the Pembroke's are more pointed. The Pembroke is often stockier, with straighter legs and a shorter body.

The Pembroke can sometimes be born with a bobbed tail, but the breed standard required a docked tail. This has now been made illegal in many countries as being unnecessary and possibly causing pain to the puppies. Most Pembrokes are now kept as family pets and the arguments, such as they were, for docking tails applied only to working dogs.
2. Both corgis can come in a variety of colors, but only one can be a blue merle. Which one?

Answer: Cardigan

Whereas the Pembroke can come in shades of red, from fawn to sable, and black & tan, the Cardigan can come in all those, and brindle & blue merle.

Both corgis have a double coat, with short, thick downy hair covered by longer, coarser guard hairs.
3. Both Cardigan & Pembroke are old breeds, but one is older by around 100 years. Which is the older breed?

Answer: Cardigan

The Pembroke that we know now was developed at around 1107 BC by Flemish Weavers. The Cardigan was developed at around 1200 BC by a Celtic tribe.

The Cardigan was a recognized breed (by the American Kennel Club) in 1935.
4. Most sources state that the Cardigan & Pembroke were developed as separate breeds, with separate ancestors. Which breed was descended from dachshunds?

Answer: Cardigan

The Cardigan & Pembroke were each developed on either sides of a mountain range, by separate sets of people. The Cardigan was descended out of the dachshund family.
5. The Cardigan & Pembroke were developed as separate breeds, with separate ancestors. Which breed was developed from spitzes?

Answer: Pembroke

The Pembroke was developed out of dogs such as the Schipperke and the Samoyed. The spitz is known for pricked ears, pointed muzzle and curly tail, which the Pembroke usually doesn't have.
6. Both are known for their small size. Are they the shortest member of the herding group, though?

Answer: Yes

They are the shortest member of the herding group. With an average weight of 30 pounds, their height is only 10 to 12 inches. Another short herding dog is the Shetland Sheepdog, which has an average weight of 15-20 pounds, but a height of 12-16 inches.
7. Most herding dogs are used for herding sheep or cattle. What were the corgis primarily used to herd?

Answer: cattle

Unlike most herding breeds, the corgi was bred for herding cattle. While nipping at the heels of the cows, the corgi was short and fast enough to be missed by the kicks.
8. Of all the stories of how a breed originated, the corgi has quite an interesting one. Said to be a "gift from the wee folk," was it the Cardigan or the Pembroke that was said to have supernatural origins?

Answer: Pembroke

The Pembroke were once used by the wee folk, if you like fairy tales. The wee folk were the Sidhe (usually pronounced as "shee"), otherwise known as fairies. The Pembroke were the steeds of the Sidhe, which is why they have a saddle on their backs.
9. They are both popular breeds, but one is more well-known than the other. Which is more popular of the two?

Answer: Pembroke

The Queen of England has Pembrokes. Also, the Pembroke is more popular for unknown reasons.
10. Although the name is the "Welsh" corgi, were they originally from Wales?

Answer: no

Unlike breeds such as the Australian shepherd, who was developed in the United States of America, the Welsh corgi was developed in Wales, but it did not originate in Wales. It was a farm dog, used for many purposes other than herding, such as ratting and bird hunter.
