Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Element named after the discoverer of X-rays.

Answer: Roentgenium

Wilhelm Roentgen, the discoverer of X-rays, is honoured in the name of the eleven letter name of element 111, roentgenium. Roentgenium is a metal, but all its isotopes have such a short half-life its chemical behaviour hasn't been studied. It used to be called unununium - that would be a tough choice for a drop-a-letter quiz!
2. Getting back into the saddle.

Answer: Remounting

Remounting a horse, or perhaps a bike, is necessary if you have fallen off, or if you have dismounted for some reason. Remounting is also used to describe your actions when you are putting a picture or another object you wish to display into a new setting.
3. Coaching or training someone - perhaps a work colleague.

Answer: Mentoring

In the work setting, it is often recommended that you have a mentor. This would be someone who could advise you on your career and oversee your progress. It's a good idea that this person is not someone who you report to. The mentoring they provide helps you develop within the workplace.
4. Gaseous element.

Answer: Nitrogen

Element 7, nitrogen is the most abundant gas in our atmosphere. Its name comes from a French word meaning "producing nitre". Nitre, potassium nitrate, is also called saltpetre, and is a key ingredient in gunpowder.
5. Gin-based Italian cocktail.

Answer: Negroni

A negroni is an Italian cocktail featuring gin, red vermouth, and Campari, which is garnished with orange peel. It is very popular, but its origins are obscure. Some say it was first produced in Florence in the early 20th century.
6. Refuse or fail to take notice of.

Answer: Ignore

If you ignore a warning sign you might have an accident. If you are not well educated you are ignorant. Gray said "Ignorance Is Bliss" and Shakespeare said "there is no darkness but ignorance".
7. Part of the body between abdomen and thigh.

Answer: Groin

The groin is that fold between your abdomen and thigh. A groin strain can be a very debilitating injury for an athlete. Best treatment would be rest.
8. Metallic element.

Answer: Iron

Element 26 is a metal called iron. It was one of the earliest metals to be exploited by humans. The Iron Age was the time when humans made use of iron tools, which were better than bronze or stone. In Africa, the Iron Age started around 2000 BCE, but it took another 1500 or so years for Northern Europeans to start theirs.
9. An atom with a positive or negative electric charge due to electron gain or loss.

Answer: Ion

In chemistry, ionic compounds are formed when elements, that have lost or gained electrons to form ions, join together. Negatively charged ions with extra electrons are called anions, while cations have fewer electrons and are positively charged. Common salt, NaCl, contains equal numbers of sodium cations with charge +1 and chloride anions with charge -1.
10. A moon of Jupiter with a lot of volcanoes.

Answer: Io

One of the biggest surprises from the Voyager mission to the gas giants of the solar system was just how strange Io was. Io is one of the four so-called Galilean moons of Jupiter, discovered with a telescope by Galileo in 1610. The data from the Voyager fly-bys in 1979 showed a very active surface of a highly volcanically active body.

It has since been found to be the most geologically active body in the solar system. The moon was named after Io, a character from ancient Greece who was turned into a cow.
