Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At Dish Shun

Answer: Addition

Addition is the practice of tallying two or more figures together until reaching the full total of all the numbers. A very simplified explanation would be that if you had four apples and someone gave you another three apples. Counting them all individually would reveal that you then had seven apples.
2. Sob Tracked

Answer: Subtract

Subtraction, in its most basic form, is the practice of removing a smaller number away from a larger number. The remaining number will be the result, or what is left. A very simplified explanation of this would be if you bought ten hamburgers, and gave nine of these away. Counting what is left will reveal that you had only one hamburger remaining.

As you progress higher through your education, other forms of subtraction are taught.
3. Try Hang Gull

Answer: Triangle

A triangle is a basic shape with three straight sides, either of equal or varying lengths, which all meet up to make a three pointed shape. An example of this shape can be seen on various road signs. In some countries, warnings of wild animals possibly crossing a road ahead are made with triangle shapes. Saudi Arabia, for example, has a picture of a camel on a trangular shaped road sign to warn people that camels may be on the road ahead.
4. Hell Jib Rah

Answer: Algebra

Algebra is one of the more advanced mathematical forms which students learn as they progress up into higher classes at school. It uses various symbols to represent numbers, making the calculation and expression of any large numbers easier. It is usually not introduced at school until early high school, or late primary school years. It is then introduced gradually by teachers until students master each new concept.

An example of this would be if you wanted someone to multiply three lots of 10,997 by two lots of 14,377. The hard way of writing this would be "Add up 10,997 + 10,997 + 10,997. Next, add up 14,377 + 14,377. Then multiply the two answers together". An easier way of stating this would be to initially let the letter A represent 10,997, and the letter B represent 14,377. The unknown (as yet) answer could be represented by the letter C. The entire formula would then be written as c = 3a x 2b.
5. Gee Hum Mat Tree

Answer: Geometry

Geometry is a special form of mathematics that deals with working out shape, size and space commodities. This could include working out the area contained in or around a triangle or circle perhaps. Or the amount of substance contained in a container. Or even the distances between, or size of, planets. It becomes a very specialised field of mathematics the longer one studies it.
6. Mall Top Lie

Answer: Multiply

In its basic form multiplication is a type of rapid addition. An example of this would be if someone had twelves piles of bricks, with each pile containing exactly eleven bricks. Wishing to know how many bricks there were altogether could involve counting each brick individually.

Another way would be to add up the number eleven, twelve times. With multiplication however, it is easier to take the number eleven (the number in each pile of bricks) and multiply it by twelve (the number of piles). This would be written as 12 x 11. Beginning from early days at school, students are taught multiplication tables in which number combinations are all memorised, so that they become much easier to work out.
7. Dee vied

Answer: Divide

Basic division is the means by which a larger number is divided by a smaller number to see how many times the smaller number goes into that larger number. A very simplified example would be if you had a bag filled with seventy toffees, and wished to share them out with nine friends, so that you all received the same amount of toffees each. You could of course sit down and count out ten piles out, one at a time, to make sure the right number of toffees was in each pile. Or, by learning division tables at school, you would know that by dividing ten (nine friends and yourself) into seventy (toffees), you would receive seven toffees each.
8. Have Her Itch

Answer: Average

The average is the sum of any list of numbers, divided by the total of the numbers in the list. This will give you a typical figure that represents all those figures. An example of finding an average is as follows: If you had five numbers of 55,75,80,90 and 65 and added them all up, the total would come to 365. If you then divided that figure by five (your five numbers), the average number of all those numbers is 73. Averages, as an example, could be used to work out the typical weight or height of all your classmates to see who was above or below that weight or height of a class average figure.
9. Wrecked Hang Gal

Answer: Rectangle

A square is a box shape with four sides that all measure the same length. A rectangle, on the other hand, has two sides both measuring the same distance - and another two sides both measuring another distance. A page of typing paper, for example, usually has two sides that are similar in length, and another two opposing sides that are also similar in length. Two opposing sides are either shorter or longer than the other two opposing sides.
10. Moth Err Met Ticks

Answer: Mathematics

This is what you have been working out with the previous nine questions in this quiz - just a few different terms for mathematics. As you grow older, you will be introduced to more challenging mathematical concepts. It can be a very enjoyable subject to study if taken at a comfortable pace.

It is very important to note however that you should always ask your teacher about anything you haven't understood properly. That teacher will then explain it again, and even more times if necessary, until you understand what it is you're learning. That is the job of a teacher. Your job, on the other hand, is to learn - and to enjoy that learning and the wonderful gift of knowledge.
