Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Style 1: Ends in a vowel

Answer: Elegance

First of all, an explanation of the solution:

Style 1 ends in a vowel, so has to be either Elegance (eight letters) or Panache (seven letters). If it was Panache then Styles 2 and 7 would both have to have five letters (as per the clue for Style 5) - this can't be the case though as Style 8 has five letters as well. Therefore, Style 1 is Elegance.

Styles 2 and 7 cannot have more than six letters (two less than Elegance as per the clue for Style 5), leaving Flair, Manner, Method and Trend as the only options. As they also have to start with the same letter, they must be Manner and Method (although which is which is not yet clear).

As Style 4 ends with the same letter as Style 7, it must be either Flair or Trend. Style 8 is also either Flair or Trend (the only five letter words available).

Style 9 is either Approach or Phrasing, as it has the same number of letters as Style 1. However, if it was Phrasing then Style 3 would have to be Trend and that is not possible as Trend is either Style 4 or Style 8. Therefore Style 9 must be Approach and Style 3 must be Arrangement.

The only options now left for Phrasing are Styles 5, 6 and 10. It can't be Style 5 as that has to have seven letters (less than Elegance, but more than Manner and Method) and can't be Style 6 since Style 10 can't be Trend. So, Phrasing has to be Style 10, revealing that Style 6 must be Panache (alphabetically directly before Phrasing) and by elimination Style 5 must be Fashion.

As Style 4 comes alphabetically after Style 6, it has to be Trend and Style 8 has to be Flair. Style 7 must therefore be Method (ending in 'd' like Style 4) and, finally, that just leaves Manner as Style 2.

---

Style can be defined as relating to a person's choice of clothes, possessions and general appearance. It is often a matter of individuality, but someone with poise, grace and an attractive appearance or mode of behaviour is often described as being elegant or having elegance.
2. Style 2: Begins with the same letter as Style 7

Answer: Manner

Although the term 'manners' is probably most commonly associated with politeness, 'manner' more generally refers to a person's approach to or style of dealing with others or tasks (whether polite or otherwise). The term derives from the Latin for 'hand'.
3. Style 3: Comes directly after Style 9 alphabetically

Answer: Arrangement

Another definition of style is related to the design, configuration or arrangement of objects or patterns. 'Arrangement' can also be used in other situations - such as to refer to a plan of action, an agreement between people, or the changes made to a piece of music to allow it to be played in a different way or by different instruments.
4. Style 4: Comes after Style 6 alphabetically (not necessarily directly)

Answer: Trend

Trend can be a synonym of style when used in the sense of something being fashionable, in vogue or the 'latest craze'. However, trend can also mean a pattern of development or change and is used in that sense in mathematics and statistics. The present participle form 'trending' has also become much more widely used thanks to Twitter and other forms of social media.
5. Style 5: Has more letters than both Style 2 and Style 7, but less than Style 1

Answer: Fashion

If something is fashionable then it might also be described as trendy, modern or stylish. Fashion is generally defined as a style that is popular at a particular point in time, but it can also be used as a verb to describe the process of creating or making something.
6. Style 6: Comes directly before Style 10 alphabetically

Answer: Panache

Panache is a term employed to describe a particularly flamboyant form of style, particularly if the person involved is able to demonstrate significant confidence and self-assurance. It is also a term used for the plume of feathers attached to historic styles of helmet, which probably explains why the word itself is derived from a Latin term, 'pinna', meaning feather.
7. Style 7: Ends with the same letter as Style 4

Answer: Method

Method is synonymous with approach and style when referring to the process used for undertaking a task or achieving something. However, it is probably used more often when someone wants to emphasise that the approach is a systematic or established process.

The word is also used as a short form of 'method acting' - a technique that involves an actor striving to emotionally identify with the part being played.
8. Style 8: Has five letters

Answer: Flair

To have flair means to have a natural ability or skill for something. However, it can also mean to be able to carry out a task in an imaginative or original way, i.e. to 'do it with style'. Oddly enough, the word 'flair' derives from the French 'flairer' meaning 'to smell', which is not generally a concept associated with style!
9. Style 9: Has the same number of letters as Style 1

Answer: Approach

Approach is a synonym for the definition of style that means 'the way something is done' and is often used specifically to refer to the way a particular person tackles a problem or task. Approach also has other meanings such as to get nearer to something or to open communications with people or organisations.
10. Style 10: This word (like all the others) is a form of 'style'

Answer: Phrasing

Style is not just limited to appearance or behaviour, but can also refer to a person's speech in terms of the words they choose to use to communicate with different people or groups. It is very common to use a different phrasing when broaching the same topic with different people - for example, very simple phrasing might be necessary when speaking with young children, but if you used the same style with an adult they would probably end up feeling insulted or patronised.
