Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the picture, work out the home of a small sea creature such as a crab, snail or mollusk.

Answer: Shell

Sh + Bell - B = Shell.

Crabs generally have a hard exoskeleton and on the underneath section is a pleon- the abdomen. In male crabs this is triangular in shape, while females have a broad pleon. Most species of crabs burrow into soft sand or mud, or hide in rock crevices. The hermit crab is different. It doesn't have an exoskeleton but makes its home in the discarded shells of other crabs. Once the crab grows and the shell becomes too small, it will go in search of another, larger shell.
2. From the picture, work out the home where bats and lions and bears mostly live!

Answer: Caves

(Car - r) + (Vest - st) = Cave.

Many creatures make their homes in caves. Bats are the second largest order of mammals, and adapt well to living in caves. While they can bring disease, they also bring some benefits, most notably that they provide guano that is useful as fertiliser. Some bats live in trees as well as caves.
3. From the picture, work out the name of the complex of underground dwelling of a rabbit.

Answer: warren

War + Reeds - eds + N = Warren. Rabbits live in warrens.

A rabbit warren is a series of underground connected tunnels where rabbits live and breed. The tunnels can extend far and often deep underground with a series of turns and often, disused empty chambers. Because rabbits breed like, well, rabbits, their population grows rapidly. If the warren becomes large, the effects of their grazing can be devastating to the area, particularly agricultural land. They eat the plants and any vegetation leaving the ground bare and subject to erosion.
4. From the picture, work out the home of small furry badgers.

Answer: sett

Nose - no + T (tea) + T (tea) = Sett

A sett is a place where badgers live. Badgers occur across the world, and dig 'setts' for themselves - a series of tunnels that are interconnected, similar to a rabbit warren. Badgers, which are nocturnal, live in their setts and feed on worms and various insects. Sometimes other animals such as foxes will move into setts that a badger is no longer using.
5. From the picture, work out where bees or wasps make their home.

Answer: hive

Hi + Love - lo = Hive. Bees live in a hive.

Bees in the wild can make their hive almost anywhere, from hollows in trees to inside walls of a building. They have been known to build exposed hanging hives. A colony of bees can be introduced to a man-made hive where they can be moved around according to season, to pollinate the crops and collect the honey. Inside each nest are a series of honeycomb walls with honey stored at the top of the wall, then are the pollen storage cells and under that are the brood cells. Bees normally stay in one hive for several years before breaking up to form new hives.
6. From the picture, work out where horses are housed.

Answer: stable

Stab + Leeks - eks = stable. Horses live in stables - unless they are wild horses!

A stable for horses is usually a barn type building with a series of stalls for each horse. Big barns generally have the stalls along the sides of the barn, a wide aisle in the centre and doors at either end. Smaller stables have a single row of stalls, each with a top and bottom opening door. The box stalls vary in size according to the size of the horse being kept in it and the needs of the horse. For instance, mares with foals would have a double stall. There is normally a tack room to store the riding equipment, and also space for feed and grooming gear.
7. From the picture, work out the old-fashioned name for the home of a cow.

Answer: byre

Ruby - ru + Lyre - ly = Byre.

Cows live in byres - an old English word used as an alternative to barn or cowshed. It is thought to be derived from Old English bur: dwelling, but this by no means certain, and is not commonly used today, generally being found only in older literature.
8. From the picture, work out the home of a a spider.

Answer: web

The clue is the acronym for the 'world wide web'. The last 'W' is emphasised, to denote the word 'web'.

Spiders build their webs from a sticky kind of 'silk' thread, that enables insects to become entangled when the unfortunate insects get caught. There are several forms of web that different spiders create; funnel webs, sheet webs, or cobwebs.
9. From the picture, work out the home that might be used by a bird, or even some species of ants.

Answer: nest

One - O + star - AR = nest.

Both birds and ants live in nests. Birds of all sorts makes nests of one form or another. Some are amazingly elaborate, and some are located by the birds in quite inaccessible and precarious places. Birds cleverly gather stems and stalks to create the shape of their nest, then line it. sometimes with soft items such as moss or leaves. Some nests are reused for several years.
10. From the picture, work out the home of the king of the jungle - a lion!

Answer: den

Denture - ture = Den.

Lions traditionally live in a den, though some other animals also call a den their home. A den is a lair that can be made from an existing rock formation, a hole that develops in a tree, or is sometimes even dug out of the dirt. It provides shelter and a place for sleep or retreat.
