Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Has appeared in 'Elementary' on television and 'Charlie's Angels' on the big screen

Answer: Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu was born in New York, and her early roles were primarily restricted to Asian characters, due to her Chinese heritage. Her breakthrough came when she was cast in the television series 'Ally McBeal' where she appeared as Ling Woo, a character created specifically for her.

She co-starred with Jonny Lee Miller in the reworked telling of the Sherlock Holmes stories, playing Joan Watson, with the series set in New York. Lucy portrayed Alex Munday in 'Charlie's Angels' (2000) and the sequel 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle' (2003) and her success has continued unabated ever since.
2. British singer, real name Michael Barratt, had major success in 1980s

Answer: Shakin' Stevens

Shakin' Stevens was born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1948 and made a career from reviving several rock 'n' roll hits from the 1950s. Among his successes were 'Green Door', and 'This Ole House', both of which reached number one on the UK Singles chart. His third number one was self-written, though, when 'Oh Julie' hit the top. Shakey's Christmas number one was 'Merry Christmas Everyone' in 1985, and played every Christmas since.

He was successful in other European countries and in Australia, but seems to have avoided any recognition in America.
3. Supermodel and actress

Answer: Cindy Crawford

Cindy Crawford was born in 1966 and began her modelling career when aged seventeen. She was represented by Elite Model Management. Cindy branched out into acting in the 1990s, although this career was relatively short lived and many of her film appearances were as herself rather than a character.

She also appeared in several television shows, again mostly as herself. Her business interests include beauty products and furniture.
4. Environmentalist; killed by animals he studied

Answer: Timothy Treadwell

Treadwell's main interest was in bears, specifically the grizzly bears (Ursus horribilis) which live in Alaska. His methodology included becoming close to the bears to the extent that he would play with the cubs and name the bears, claiming he had formed a mutual understanding with them.

This brought him into conflict with other environmentalists, in particular the managers of Katmai National Park where he spent most summers. Eventually, his confidence was proved misplaced and he, and his girlfriend, were mauled to death in 2003.
5. Acted in 'Bridge of Spies' in 2015 and in the television series 'M*A*S*H'

Answer: Alan Alda

Alan Alda was born as Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo in the Bronx, New York City. His father was a theatre performer who used the name Robert Alda, and his son adopted the same surname when he took up acting in the 1950s. Alan Alda played the role of Hawkeye Pierce in the television version of M*A*S*H; the character was portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original 1970 film. Alda stayed with the television series throughout its run, from 1972-1983, but this was far from being his only success.

He has appeared in numerous films, including the one I gave as a clue in the question, the 2015 'Bridge of Spies', which starred Tom Hanks.
6. Jazz musician; part of the Miles Davis Quintet

Answer: Herbie Hancock

From Chicago, Hancock showed early signs of his proficiency as a pianist, beginning with classical pieces before turning to jazz. He joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1963 - other members included Wayne Shorter on saxophone and Tony Williams. Over his long career, Hancock has received numerous Grammy awards and has composed many songs, including 'Watermelon Man' in 1962.
7. Artist who lived in France for many years

Answer: Pablo Picasso

Picasso is one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century - someone who many people who have no interest in art could name. He was born in Malaga in 1881 and produced his early works in the nineteenth century. Picasso moved permanently to France in 1907 and created paintings in various styles, such as his 'Blue Period' and 'Rose Period'. Taking inspiration from Matisse, and the Fauvist, Picasso and his contemporary, Georges Braque, developed Cubism, depicting subjects from different viewpoints in the same picture. Among his best known works is 'Guernica', created in 1937, depicting the bombing of the town of that name by German and Italian forces. Picasso died in France in 1973.
8. Thriller writer; many works adapted into films

Answer: Frederick Forsyth

Forsyth is English, and initially worked in journalism before turning his skills in writing and research to creating thrillers. His first novel was 'The Day of the Jackal', published in 1971. Its plot, about an attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle, was based on a real life event which he had covered as a journalist, although many of the scenes depicted in the book were fictional.

The novel was turned into a successful film, as were future works such as 'The Odessa File' (1972) and 'The Fourth Protocol' (1984).
9. Known for loving Rock 'n' Roll; real surname Larkin

Answer: Joan Jett

Born in Pennsylvania, Joan moved to California with her family when in her teens, which gave her more opportunities to pursue her music interests. She adopted the name Jett, as it was more suited to her chosen music career. Her first band was The Runaways, which also included Lita Ford - the band had a big hit in Japan with 'Cherry Bomb' in 1976.

When The Runaways split, Joan formed her own band, The Blackhearts, with 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' becoming number one around the world in 1982.
10. Prince of Darkness; known for music and 'reality' tv

Answer: Ozzy Osborne

Ozzy was born in Birmingham, England, in 1948 and was named John by his parents. He was the lead singer of Black Sabbath, one of the earliest heavy metal bands. The band's biggest hit was 'Paranoid', taken from the album of the same name, in 1970. Ozzy married Sharon Levy, his second wife, in 1982 and she did much to keep Ozzy in the public eye, notably in the MTV series 'The Osbournes' which was shown between 2002 and 2005.
