Answer: Philip Anthony Hopkins

The 'Philip' was from his mother Muriel's mother's maiden name 'Phillips'. This was quickly dropped and the Anthony shortened to 'Tony' at his own request.
2. Upon which 'special' day of the year was he born?

Answer: New Year's Eve

He was born on New Year's Eve, 1937.
3. What was the Hopkins' family business?

The bakery 'A.R. Hopkins and Son' was founded by Sir Anthony's grandfather, Richard. Tony's father Dick also worked in the family business in Tai Bach, near Port Talbot, Wales.
4. How many brothers and sisters does Sir Anthony have?

Answer: none

Apparently his birth was difficult, and Dick and Muriel decided against having more children.
5. After a few unhappy terms at West Monmouth School in Pontypool, he transferred to another school as a boarder. At which school did he spend four years?

Answer: Cowbridge Grammar School

His parents had decided he should leave Central School, Port Talbot, in the hope that attending a boarding school would 'perk up his marks'. Cowbridge Grammar was closer to his home than West Monmouth, but still he was less than a brilliant scholar, excelling only at playing the piano.
6. He received only one 'O-level' at this school. In which subject?

Answer: English

An 'O level' is a sort of school leaving qualification, the 'O' standing for 'ordinary'.
7. He once said that, at age 15, he decided he wanted to become an actor so that he could meet a certain actress. She was?

Answer: Claire Bloom

He was so impressed by Miss Bloom's performance in 'Limelight' that he saw the film fifteen times. Twenty years later they played opposite one another as Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora in a film version of Ibsen's 'A Doll's House'.
8. Between 1958 and 1960 he was required to do his National Service in the British Armed Forces. How did he complete this obligation?

Answer: as a clerk in the Royal Artillery

He attained the rank of Bombardier (equivalent to Corporal) by the end of his time in the Army.
9. About a year after leaving the service, he was able to further his theatrical training by obtaining a place at RADA. RADA is the Royal Academy of...what?

Answer: Dramatic Art

RADA prides itself on turning out stars. Sarah Miles had just left when Sir Anthony {arrived;} John Hurt and David Warner were in their final year. His own class included Simon Ward, later to play Winston Churchill in 'Young Winston'.
10. During the filming of 'The Lion In Winter', Sir Anthony broke his arm? How?

Answer: fell from a horse

He was an inexperienced horseman and the horse he was riding, having been frightened by something, reared and dumped him on the ground. He (Sir Anthony, not the horse) was wearing a full suit of armour at the time, broke his right arm quite badly and had to spend time in a hospital in France.
