Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colonel John Marlowe led a Union column deep into Confederate territory, and fell in love along the way. Sam McCord went north to look for gold. Sheriff John T. Chance had unusual deputies. Which actor played these men?

Answer: John Wayne

In 'The Horse Soldiers' (1959), Wayne played Marlowe, who sparred with the regimental surgeon played by Holden and fell in love with a Southern belle (Constance Towers) whilst successfully carrying out his orders. Sam McCord and partner George (Stewart Granger) went 'North to Alaska' (1960) in search of gold.

In 'Rio Bravo' (1959) Chance holds a prisoner for trial with the help of a recovering alcoholic (Dean Martin), an old man (Walter Brennan) and a hot shot kid, who also sings (Ricky Nelson).
2. David Larrabee was a playboy who caused his brother, Linus, no end of problems. Sergeant J.J. Sefton was suspected of betraying other prisoners to the Germans. Boxer Joe Bonaparte was a 'Golden Boy'. Which actor played these very different characters?

Answer: William Holden

William Holden was David to Humphrey Bogart's Linus Larrabee in the 1954 version of 'Sabrina'. Audrey Hepburn played the title role. The part of Sefton, in 'Stalag 17' (1953) brought Holden an Oscar as Best Actor. Bonaparte, in 1939's 'Golden Boy', was his first major role.
3. Sam Harmon was one of Danny Ocean's buddies. Following woman trouble, Dude descended from being an exemplary lawman to a barfly nicknamed 'Borachon'. Tom Elder was one of Katie's four sons who wanted to avenge the murder of their father. Who played Sam, Dude and Tom?

Answer: Dean Martin

The 1960 version of 'Ocean's 11' starred Frank Sinatra in the title role, with Martin playing Harmon. Other cast members were Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Angie Dickinson. Dude was the recovering alcoholic deputy in 'Rio Bravo' (1959). 'The Sons of Katie Elder' (1965) was a western starring John Wayne (John), Martin (Tom), Earl Holliman (Matt) and Michael Anderson Jr. (Bud) as the sons.
4. Which actor played the dual role of Rudolf Rassendyll and King Rudolf V in one version of 'The Prisoner of Zenda', gold prospector George Pratt (whose partners were his brother Billy and Sam McCord) and Allan Quartermain in 1950?

Answer: Stewart Granger

Granger played the dual role in the 1952 version of 'Zenda'. In 'North to Alaska' (1960), McCord (John Wayne) failed to bring George's fiancee back from Seattle, with amusing results. Fabian played Billy. 'King Solomon's Mines' (1950) saw Granger in the role of adventurer Quartermain.
5. This actress appeared as the card-playing Feathers, the love interest of Sheriff John T. Chance. She also played Beatrice Ocean in the original 'Ocean's 11' (1960) and Lt. Francie Corum, a nurse, in 'Captain Newman, MD'. Can you name her?

Answer: Angie Dickinson

Dickinson later starred in 'Police Woman' on television, as Sgt. Pepper Martin. In 'Rio Bravo', Feathers and Chance (John Wayne) argued for much of the movie, before admitting their interest in each other. The role of Beatrice was not carried over to the 2001 remake of 'Ocean's 11', but Angie did appear as herself in that film and Julia Roberts played a character called Tess Ocean. Gregory Peck played the title role, a psychiatrist, in 1963's 'Captain Newman MD' in which he and Nurse Corum ministered to victims of battle fatigue during WWII.
6. When he played the evil Dr. Joseph Mengele, this actor was definitely playing against type. More typical 'good guy' roles were the lawyer Atticus Finch and Captain Keith Mallory, who led a small group to destroy 'The Guns of Navarone'. Who was this actor?

Answer: Gregory Peck

Peck was quite convincing as Mengele in 'The Boys from Brazil' (1978), in which Olivier appeared as Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman. The story involved an attempt to clone Hitler! Playing Finch in 'To Kill A Mockingbird' (1962) garnered Peck a Best Actor Oscar. Duvall appeared as 'Boo' Radley. Mallory's small band of soldiers in 'Navarone' (1961) included David Niven, James Darren and Stanley Baker.
7. This actor portrayed Heathcliff in 1939 and Maxim de Winter, who brings his second wife to Manderley, in 1940. Approximately thirty years later he appeared as real-life British senior officers Sir Hugh Dowding and Sir John French, in 'The Battle of Britain' and 'Oh! What a Lovely War'. Which actor is being described?

Answer: Laurence Olivier

Lord Olivier, as he became in 1970, was renowned for his acting in Shakespearean roles, both on stage and screen, but including the title roles of 'Hamlet' (1948) and 'Henry V' (1944) might have made this question a bit too easy. He was Heathcliff to Merle Oberon's Cathy in 'Wuthering Heights' (1939).

In 'Rebecca' (1940), Joan Fontaine played the second wife of Maxim de Winter. The senior officer roles were both quite small, almost cameos, and both films date from 1969.
8. Lieutenant Colonel William Kilgore loved 'the smell of napalm in the morning'. Major Frank Burns was not the most popular officer in his unit. It was a good idea to stay on good terms with the 'family' of lawyer Tom Hagen. Who played these characters?

Answer: Robert Duvall

In 'Apocalypse Now' (1979), the slightly mad Kilgore felt that napalm smelled 'like...victory'. Duvall originated the role of Frank Burns (played on TV by Larry Linville) in the 1970 movie 'M*A*S*H'. Hagen was attorney to the Corleone family in 'The Godfather' (1972) and its sequels. Duvall was still actively making films in the first decade of the 21st century.
9. Early roles for this actor included Edgar Linton in 'Wuthering Heights' and First World War pilot Lieutenant Douglas 'Scotty' Scott. Later he won an Oscar for playing Major Pollock, a hotel guest with a shady past. Which actor is this?

Answer: David Niven

As Linton, in the 1939 version of 'Wuthering Heights', Niven was almost unrecognisable without his trademark moustache. Scotty was a member of 'The Dawn Patrol' (1938), along with Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. The Best Actor Academy Award came for 'Separate Tables' (1958), which also starred Deborah Kerr, Rita Hayworth and Burt Lancaster.
10. Anna Leonowens danced with the King of Siam. Timid Sibyl Railton-Bell fell in love with the shady Major Pollock, a fellow hotel guest. Ida Carmody roamed the Australian outback with her sheep drover husband Paddy and their son Sean. Which actress played these diverse roles?

Answer: Deborah Kerr

The 'Shall We Dance?' sequence from 'The King and I' (1956) is a personal favourite. Teacher Anna and the King (Yul Brynner) dispense with their inhibitions for a brief interval, before affairs of state and illness intrude. Sibyl in 'Separate Tables' (1958) is upset when her mother (Gladys Cooper) finds out about the Major's (David Niven) past.

The sheep-shearing scene from 'The Sundowners' (1960) is memorable. Miss Kerr plays Ida, Robert Mitchum is Paddy Carmody and Michael Anderson Jr. appears as Sean.
