Question 4 of 10
4. "Friendly Persuasion" (1956) is set in rural Indiana in 1862, so of course many animals appear, including the horses which Quaker Jess Birdwell (Gary Cooper) and his Methodist friend Sam Jordan (Robert Middleton) hitch to their carriages every Sunday, often resulting in a friendly race on the way to their respective places of worship. The main scene-stealer here, however, is not a horse but a farmyard creature who is Eliza Birdwell's pet, and her youngest child's nemesis. Please, name this animal, who even receives billing in the opening credits. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Eddie is such an integral part of the Crane family on "Frasier" that he can be seen as one of the stars of the series, stealing nearly every scene in which he appears. What is it about this dog that leaves Frasier, Martin and Daphne with open mouths? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Feisty little terriers, whether they are Jack Russells or some other pleasant breed or mix, are almost guaranteed to be scene-stealers. Which of these little fellows not only stole scenes from his movie co-stars, but also did a good job of upstaging everybody at that year's award season nominations and ceremonies? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Considering that it was set in a war zone, TV's "M*A*S*H" features quite a number of animals, from Radar's zoo to Colonel Potter's horse, Sophie. One episode involves the doctors' efforts to save the horse's life, before Potter returns from Tokyo. Who else becomes ill in the same episode? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During its long run, the TV show "Friends" featured a number of animals including a monkey, a duck, a chicken, various cats and at least one dog. Which animal has to be rushed to the emergency room because it has swallowed some Scrabble tiles?

Answer: Marcel, Ross's monkey

The main plot of "The One with Two Parts", a first season double episode, concerns Rachel and Monica meeting cute doctors when they swap identities because Rachel has no medical insurance to cover her treatment for a fall. The subplot has Ross worrying about whether or not he is ready to be a father, and proving that he is by fighting to have Marcel treated at the people hospital when the monkey is choking on some Scrabble tiles.

Don't feed the animals! This one even upstaged George Clooney and Noah Wyle (the cute doctors)!
2. Despite the all star cast, one of the scenes I have remembered best from "The Longest Day" (1962) concerns Sword Beach and Beachmaster Captain Colin Maud, RN who at one point tells the soldiers that they need to get off the beach to stop the shelling, which is "bad for the dog". By what name does Maud (Kenneth More) address his bulldog which he keeps by his side?

Answer: Winston

Although the real Maud's dog was a German shepherd named Winnie, it appears that the film's makers decided that it would be more appropriate for Maud to have a British bulldog named after the prime minister. The poor pooch does look rattled by all the commotion going on around him, but still manages to steal the scene even from a pre-Bond Sean Connery as a wisecracking soldier.

Don't feed the animals! In the same scene a couple of pigeons also vie for scene stealing kudos, by flying the wrong way with a correspondent's news story.
3. In the opening scene of "LOST", when Jack wakes up on the island, the first other survivor of the airplane crash that he sees is Vincent, the dog.

Answer: True

The first thing we see in the pilot episode of the series "LOST" is Dr Jack Shephard's eye, in close up. It opens and we see that he is lying on the jungle floor. Something moves in the bushes, causing Jack to appear frightened, but what emerges is a dog, that we later discover is named Vincent, and belongs to a young passenger named Walt.

Don't feed the animals! Vincent wasn't the only furry scene-stealer in this series. Remember the polar bear?

Answer: Samantha, the goose

Samantha the goose has a habit of sneaking up behind Little Jess Birdwell (Richard Eyer) and giving him a peck on the back of the leg. For his part, Little Jess would be happy to wring her neck, but Eliza (Dorothy McGuire) will have none of that, both because Samantha is her pet and because of her Quaker beliefs. She is driven to a minor act of violence when Confederate raiders appear, and she thrashes one of them about the head with a broom to save Samantha from the pot.

Don't feed the animals! Not only will they steal every scene they are in, but in this case they might drive you to watch an old favourite movie whilst researching a single quiz question! (True story!)
5. Eddie is such an integral part of the Crane family on "Frasier" that he can be seen as one of the stars of the series, stealing nearly every scene in which he appears. Other animals also appear, including a small greyhound-like dog that Niles acquires shortly after separating from Maris. What is it about this dog that leaves Frasier, Martin and Daphne with open mouths?

Answer: She is a canine version of Maris.

Niles doesn't see it, but everybody else does. The little creature is underweight, fragile, demanding and had attracted Niles's attention in the pet shop with a "haughty sniff from the corner", all things typical of Maris. Far from obeying him she does just the opposite, leading to a compliant chorus of "OK then" from Niles.

Don't feed the animals! This one even wanted to take over a role that never had a human playing it!

Answer: Uggie, "The Artist"

Decked out in his little doggie bow tie, Uggie upstaged everyone - canine as well as human - at nomination ceremonies and on red carpets during the award season that culminated in five Oscars, including Best Picture, for "The Artist". He went on to win that year's Golden Collar Award as top movie dog.

I was rather fond of Cosmo, who played Arthur the dog in "Beginners" in the same year, but he was overshadowed by Uggie. Max played Milo, the clever canine companion of Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) in "The Mask". Moose is best known as Eddie in TV's "Frasier".

Don't feed the animals! In this case they have even been stealing scenes from one another!

Answer: Margaret Houlihan

Whilst everyone is pitching in to save Sophie from a bout of colic in the season five episode "The Colonel's Horse", Margaret's appendix flares up and she needs an emergency operation, which Hawkeye performs. By the time Potter returns everything is all right again.

Don't feed the animals! Even though the human had a life-threatening emergency, it was the horse who had the episode named for her!
8. Those pesky, scene-stealing animals turn up everywhere, even in animated movies! What is remarkable about the dog Dug in the film "Up"?

Answer: He can talk.

In fact, Dug is not the only talking dog in this charming movie, but he is the sweetest. All of the dogs wear collars, made by their evil master, that allow their thoughts to be turned into human speech. Dug joins up with Carl (Ed Asner) and the youngster Russell instead and helps them to achieve their goal. Dug "talks" a mile a minute and is easily - squirrel! - distracted.

Don't feed the animals! They'll make you laugh until you cry!
9. The series "Mad About You" ran for seven seasons, and was about a young New York couple played by Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt. Toward the end of the series, the Buchmans (Reiser and Hunt) have a baby, but they are all often upstaged by their slightly ditzy dog. What is the dog's name?

Answer: Murray

Murray, played by Maui, would often run into walls, sometimes when chasing mice that were not there. He was lost once, and Paul and Jamie (Reiser and Hunt) knew they had found him when the police called to say they had a dog who made absolutely no response when called by name. Murray had some good days, though, like the time he managed to tell their friends Fran and Mark, Lassie-style, that the Buchmans were locked in their own bathroom.

Ira is Paul's cousin and Ursula is the ditzy waitress at their local restaurant. She's also the twin sister of Phoebe, from "Friends".

Don't feed the animals! Just when you think they are too dumb for words they'll go and do something special!
10. The 1964 movie "The Three Lives of Thomasina" featured a great number of animals, including an injured badger, a frog with a broken leg, forest creatures and some badly treated circus animals. Who or what was Thomasina?

Answer: A ginger cat

Thomasina is the pet of Mary McDhui, whose widowed father is the local veterinarian in a wee Scottish village in 1912. When the cat is injured Mr McDhui feels the best thing is to put her to sleep, and Mary and her friends give the animal a funeral complete with bagpipes. Thomasina is found by Laurie, who lives in the woods, but is not a witch (as the children think), still alive and is nursed back to health. There's a happy ending, after a few ups and downs . It is a Disney movie, after all!

Don't feed the animals! What with animals and children, the adults (Patrick McGoohan and Susan Hampshire) have nearly every scene stolen from them!
