Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "zoinks" is an exclamative interjection the popularization of which has been attributed to which character in the "Scooby Doo" universe?

Answer: Shaggy

Various definitions in the online "Urban Dictionary" tell us that "Zoinks!" is used to express fear or panic, or perhaps delight or then again maybe surprise. A versatile word is this one!

Some sources say that it was not "Scooby Doo's" Shaggy, but Robin from the 1960s "Batman" TV series who popularized the word. Take your pick.
2. Which of these pairs of "Z" words are most nearly synonyms?

Answer: Zero and zilch

Zilch is a slang term for zero, so they are indeed synonyms. A ziggurat is a temple shaped like a pyramid and is synonymous with neither a fertilized cell (zygote) nor the spirit of the age (zeitgeist). Zippers are usually practical rather than zany!
3. Quagga is an interesting word, isn't it? Which of the following is most like a quagga?

Answer: Zebra

The quagga was a subspecies of zebra that lived on the plains of South Africa until becoming extinct in the nineteenth century. The creature was brown and white and its stripes were mainly on the front part of the body.
4. Which of the following might be rated between one and six on the Beaufort Scale?

Answer: Zephyr

Zephyr is a rather inexact word for a gentle wind, and as such might be rated anything from "light air" (one on the Beaufort Scale of wind strength) to "strong breeze" (six on the same scale). In literary circles, Zephyr is the West wind.
5. Which reality television series often features the Zingbot, whose mission is usually to deliver insults to participants before, during and after a competition?

Answer: Big Brother

The Zingbot would usually arrive to preside over a Power of Veto competition, dishing out insults to all the house guests who remained in the house at that point. A twist in the summer of 2014 had Zingbot complimenting everyone instead and relying on comedian Kathy Griffin who accompanied him to provide the insults. By the time they left Zingbot had been restored to his former self.
6. Which "Z" is an annual plant that you might find in your garden, a community in West Virginia and a flower-class corvette of the Royal Navy, sunk in 1941?

Answer: Zinnia

There are many species of zinnia, the plant, native mostly to North America. The flowers come in many colours making zinnias a popular garden plant. Zinnia, WV sits on Buckeye Creek. The corvette HMS Zinnia of the Royal Navy was sunk by a German U-boat less than a year after she was launched.
7. An impi is a formation most associated with which of the following?

Answer: Zulus

During the nineteenth century, many a British soldier in southern Africa met his fate at the hands of a Zulu fighting formation known as an impi. The formation consisted of a central "chest" flanked by two "horns" that would attempt to encircle the enemy. Behind the chest the "loins", or reserve, rested until needed, facing away from the fighting.
8. Zippers are handy things, aren't they? Whitcomb Judson is usually credited with having invented the original "clasp locker", but who patented an improved version in 1917?

Answer: Gideon Sundback

Sundback changed Judson's hook and eye "locker" to a "separable fastener" with metal teeth, a much more practical design. George de Mestral was the Swiss gent who patented that other super-duper fastener, velcro, in 1955.
9. Daddy was Frank and Mama was Gail, but they chose to name their kids Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva. What was their shared surname?

Answer: Zappa

The entire family are talented entertainers, either as musicians or actors, though Gail's light was not so bright as Frank's. Frank died at the young age of 52 in 1993. Moon and Diva are daughters, Dweezil and Ahmet are sons.
10. In which country can you find the ziggurat known as Chogha Zanbil?

Answer: Iran

The ziggurat, or temple, at Chogha Zanbil in Iran's Khuzestan province, is considered to be one of the best-preserved examples of such a structure. In 1979 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
