The Further Adventures of Ralph the Llama Quiz

On his earlier travels through movie land, Ralph and his team looked mostly at movies involving either llamas or camels. This time, having slipped away from his team, Ralph has asked me to help him find some movies featuring his namesakes, other Ralphs.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ralph the Llama is very worried about his young namesake in "A Christmas Story". People keep telling Ralphie "You'll shoot your eye out!". What is it that Ralphie Parker wants so desperately for Christmas that provokes this warning?

Answer: Air rifle

Ralphie's specific request is "I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!" His mother tells him "No" and issues the warning about his eye. Even Santa tells him he'll shoot his eye out, but Ralphie persists in his request.

"A Christmas Story" (1983) is a perennial yuletide favourite, and stars Peter Billingsley as Ralphie.
2. This Ralph is basically the "good guy" in two movie versions of "Lord of the Flies", although he succumbs to the savage life on their desert island almost as much as do all of the boys. He is first elected leader, but things rapidly fall apart. Who is the author of the novel that provides the basis for both films?

Answer: William Golding

William Golding's novel is required reading in many high schools, perhaps as a cautionary tale to wild youth? His first novel, it places in several Top 100 lists of novels.

Ralph, whose last name we never learn, is not above laughing at the shortcomings of other boys, or stripping off his school uniform to better stand the heat of the island on which they have been stranded without adult supervision. As leader he tries to keep some semblance of civilization, but ultimately fails.

Ralph the Llama finds it hard to choose his favourite performance, between James Aubrey in 1963 and Balthazar Getty in 1990.
3. Hamish Linklater's role as Ralph Branca in the 2013 movie "42" is of a supporting nature. Who is Ralph Branca in this baseball biopic?

Answer: Teammate of Jackie Robinson

The real life Ralph Branca is the only star from the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers to have survived to see the film about Jackie Robinson's first year in the big leagues and the breaking of baseball's colour barrier. Branca is correctly portrayed as having been a supportive teammate to Robinson. A right-handed pitcher, Branca is probably best remembered for an event not covered by the movie - the pitch to Bobby Thomson that resulted in "The Shot Heard Round the World" in a 1951 playoff game against the Giants.

Ralph the Llama thinks it is sad that his namesake is remembered for one bad pitch, and not for being a good teammate as shown in the movie.
4. In the 1988 movie "1969", Ralph and Scott are two college friends from a small town who strongly oppose the Vietnam War and make their views known in ways small, large and illegal. Scott is played by Kiefer Sutherland, but which actor, whose later roles include both a super sleuth and a superhero, plays Ralph?

Answer: Robert Downey, Jr.

In the movie Ralph goes to jail for trying to alter draft board records, and Scott nearly dodges his way to Canada, but decides to come home. The later roles alluded to for Downey are those of Sherlock Holmes and Tony Stark (Iron Man). The incorrect choices are all actors who have played Holmes on television.

Ralph the Llama isn't sure what he thinks about this one, as he doesn't agree with law-breaking.
5. Ralph "Iggy" Ignatowski, a US Marine Corps private played by Jamie Bell, is horribly tortured and mutilated by enemy soldiers in the movie "Flags of Our Fathers" (2006), as he was in real life. Although we do not see what happens, we hear about it from his friend John Bradley. On what Pacific island does this happen?

Answer: Iwo Jima

"Doc" Bradley, a US Navy corpsman, is one of the flag raisers in the famous Joe Rosenthal photograph taken on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima early in the battle. As played by Ryan Philippe, Bradley is shown to be haunted by what happened to his buddy Iggy. The companion movie "Letters from Iwo Jima", which tells the story of the battle from the Japanese side, has a scene which may involve the capture and torture of Ignatowski, seen from the opposite viewpoint. Clint Eastwood is the director of both of these films.

Ralph the Llama thanks Ralph Ignatowski for his service and sacrifice.
6. This character is named Rolfe, which is close enough to satisfy Ralph the Llama. Early in "The Sound of Music" he seems like a charming lad who is smitten by the eldest von Trapp daughter, but he changes after the Nazi takeover of Austria and turns against the whole family. What is the name of the daughter who is so upset by Rolfe's change of heart?

Answer: Liesl

Early in the film, Liesl (Charmian Carr) meets Rolfe (Daniel Truhitte), who has delivered a telegram, in the summerhouse in the garden of her home. They dance, and she sings "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and the only sour note is a thunderstorm. Later Rolfe is very stiff and abrupt with her, and says he has no time for such foolishness any longer. Liesl confides in Maria (Julie Andrews) on both occasions.

Ralph the Llama thinks Rolfe should have been nicer to Liesl.
7. Dr Rolf Pedersen is one of "The Heroes of Telemark" (1965) who attempt to stop the Nazis from developing an atomic bomb by stopping their production of heavy water. Richard Harris plays Knut, who recruits him into the Norwegian resistance, but which dimpled American plays Rolf?

Answer: Kirk Douglas

Based on a true story. "The Heroes of Telemark" contains both moments of tension and episodes of all out action. Kirk's character is a scientist, but he becomes thoroughly involved in all the goings-on. None of the incorrect choices are in this movie, although Kirk and Burt do appear in seven films together.

Ralph the Llama thinks this one was very exciting!
8. In "The Aviator" (2004), Ralph Owen Brewster is an elected official who tries to make life difficult in various ways for Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio). Alan Alda plays Brewster, but what is this Ralph's title in the movie?

Answer: Senator

Brewster's role is to harass Hughes any way he can, in order to smooth the way for Hughes' rival Juan Trippe (Alec Baldwin) and he uses his position in the pursuit of this mission.

Ralph the Llama wonders if this role really deserves the Oscar nomination it received.
9. Ralph Swain is a submarine crewman who jumps ship in his hometown in the 1959 movie adaptation of Nevil Shute's "On the Beach". Where does he jump ship?

Answer: San Francisco

The world is ending and his submarine is on its way to Australia, and Swain just wants to spend his last days in San Francisco. After attempting to get him to return his superiors eventually let him have his way and he is able to go fishing in the harbour whilst the rest of the crew sail off across the Pacific. Australian actor John Meillon plays the part.

Ralph the Llama is not amused that Swain's first name is changed to Bobby in the 2000 TV adaptation.
10. The title character of "Wreck-It Ralph" is a bad guy who really, really, really wants to be a good guy and win a medal, so he can live in a penthouse and eat cake. In which video game does he meet Vanellope Von Schweetz, who becomes his friend?

Answer: Sugar Rush

Vanellope is a glitch in the game "Sugar Rush" who badly wants to go racing with the other characters in her game, but needs some help from Ralph to get her wish. "Fix-It Felix, Jr." is Ralph's home game and "Hero's Duty" is where he goes in quest of a medal. "Turbo Time" is an old game that is not plugged in any longer. Voice actors include John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.

Ralph the Llama really likes Wreck-It Ralph and hopes all goes well for him and his arcade friends in the future.
