Peter was born on December 7, 1942 to parents Barnet and Pearl Tomarken. He was the middle son in the family. Barnet and Pearl owned a jewelry store called Dee's.

He first started hosting the pilot of "Rodeo Drive", which began and ended in October 1980. He then hosted the pilot of "Duel in the Daytime", which began and ended in August 1981. Jay Wolpert was the producer for both shows.

Peter was 15 when they moved to Beverly Hills. They moved to Beverly Hills because Barnet died. He went to high school with Bonnie Franklin and Nora Ephron.
