Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christopher Plummer was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1929, but moved to Senneville, Quebec, shortly after his birth. What event, which may have been considered socially unacceptable for the time, precipitated the move?

Answer: His parents' divorce

Christopher Plummer was born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer in 1929 in Toronto, Ontario. Due to his parents divorcing, he grew up with his mother's family in in Senneville, Quebec, Canada's French-speaking province, so he fluently spoke French and English. His mother was the granddaughter of Sir John Abbot, who had been Canada's Prime Minister from 1891-92.
2. Like William Shatner, where did Christopher Plummer learn the basics of acting?

Answer: Montréal Repertory Theatre

The Montreal Repertory Theatre was founded in 1930. The amateur company attracted young actors and actresses who learned their craft in a number of productions, including "The Perfect Alibi" by A.A. Milne, "Candida" by George Bernard Shaw, and Shakespeare's "Hamlet". Plummer appeared in a number of roles in the 1940s.

Besides Plummer and Shatner, many others honed their craft, including Hume Cronyn, another internationally known Canadian actor. The Montreal Repertory Theatre disbanded in 1961 due to a heavy load of debt. Both Plummer and Shatner worked together later when Shatner was Plummer's understudy in a production of "Henry V".

It is reported that when Plummer was not able to go on stage one night, Shatner took the stage to replace him, which led to Shatner's first big break into acting.
3. In the mid-1950s, Christopher Plummer returned to which town in Ontario in order to appear in some Shakespearean plays?

Answer: Stratford

Stratford, Ontario, holds an annual Shakespearean Festival. Christopher Plummer got his first starring role as Hal in "Henry V" in 1956. This was followed by many other stage roles on Broadway, with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK, and more at the Stratford Festival. He received his first Tony Award nomination in 1959 for best actor in Archibald MacLeish's "JB".
4. Christopher Plummer's singing voice was dubbed in "The Sound of Music".

Answer: True

Christopher Plummer was originally recorded as singing "Edelweiss", but his performance was later dubbed. Singer Bill Lee is the voice that you actually hear in the film, but according to producers, he was chosen because his singing voice was very close to Plummer's. It makes you wonder why they chose to dub Plummer's voice.
5. Of the seven Tony Award nominations that he received over the years for his performance in plays on Broadway, how many did Plummer actually win?

Answer: 2

Plummer won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in "Cyrano" in 1974. He also won the award for best Actor in a Play for his role in "Barrymore" in 1997. His first Tony nomination occurred in 1959, and his last came in 2007. He definitely had a long and prolific stage acting career.
6. For which film did Christopher Plummer receive his first Academy Award Nomination?

Answer: The Last Station

Although he starred in many successful films over the years, Christopher Plummer was not nominated for an Academy Award until 2010. The octogenarian received the nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the Tolstoy biopic "The Last Station". Unfortunately, he lost the award that year to Christopher Waltz.
7. Did Christopher Plummer ever receive an Academy Award?

Answer: Yes

Plummer won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Beginners" in 2011. In this movie he plays a man who comes out as gay in his senior years. At the time, he also set a record. At 82, he was the oldest actor to win an Oscar up to that point.
8. For which movie in 2017 did Christopher Plummer scramble to replace the original star?

Answer: All the Money in the World

"All the Money in the World" had been completely finished by November, 2017. Its star, however, was accused of sexual misconduct and TriStar Pictures did not want it released with the original star in it. So, they called on Plummer to replace the original star, which meant that all scenes showing the original person had to be re-shot, and the film had to be re-edited.

The initial release date for the film was December 22, 2017, but even with re-shooting and post-production work, the film only had to be pushed back to a December 25, 2017 release. Plummer set another Oscar record when the award season rolled around by being the oldest actor to receive an Academy Award nomination up to that point in history.
9. In 1970 Christopher Plummer was invested as a Companion of the Order of which country?

Answer: Canada

At the time of this award it was Canada's highest civilian honour. The award is made by the Governor General, the Queen's representative in Canada. In Plummer's case, the honour was given for "his contribution to the performing arts at home and abroad".
10. In which state did Christopher Plummer spend the final years of his life?

Answer: Connecticut

Christopher Plummer lived in Weston, Connecticut, with his third wife, Elaine Taylor, over the last few years of his life. The two were married for over fifty years before his passing. Unfortunately, he passed away at home after a fall that resulted in a blow to his head.
