Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter Capaldi is the third actor from Scotland to portray the Doctor in "Doctor Who". Where in Scotland was he born and raised?

Answer: Glasgow

Capaldi was born in Glasgow on April 14, 1958. His mother was from Ireland and his father was from Italy. He graduated from Saint Ninian's High School. Sylvester McCoy, born in the town of Dunoon, was the first Doctor from Scotland. David Tennant, who is from Bathgate, was the second.
2. After graduating from Saint Ninian's, where did Peter Capaldi go to college?

Answer: Glasgow School of Art

Capaldi attended, but did not graduate from, the Glasgow School of Art. It is one of the best art schools in Britain, and many of the UK's most notable artists are graduates. Actor Robbie Coltrane is an alumni.

In college, Capladi was in a band called Dreamboys. The drummer was future talk show host Craig Ferguson, who is one of the world's biggest "Doctor Who" fans. Ferguson actually credits Capaldi with being the one who told him to go into comedy. It was good advice. The original name of the band Capaldi and Ferguson formed is not family friendly.
3. Peter Capaldi has credited much of the success he has had in his career to the support of his wife. What is her name?

Answer: Elaine Collins

Peter Capaldi and Elaine Collins met in 1983 in a touring production for the Paines Plough Theatre Company. Capaldi asked her for five years before she agreed to marry him in 1991. They have acted together in a variety of projects over 20 years, and have been called "The Scottish Kenneth [Branagh] and Emma [Thompson]". They have a daughter, Cecily.

Jenny Seagrove was the love interest in "Local Hero" (1982), Capaldi's first major film role. Sammi Davis work with Capaldi in "The Lair of the White Worm" (1988). Miranda Richardson is the same age as Capaldi, but it is hard to find another connection.
4. Peter Capaldi's first big break in television was the title role in "Mr Wakefield's Crusade" (1992). What was Mister Wakefield's first name?

Answer: Luke

"Mr Wakefield's Crusade" is based on a novel by Bernice Rubens. It is a a murder mystery set in the 1920s. Capaldi plays a closeted gay man who may or may not have witnessed a murder. The film starred Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon from "Harry Potter") and Miranda Richardson.
5. Peter Capaldi is the first Doctor who can say he has an Academy Award. In 1995, he won for a Live Action Short film about whose "Wonderful Life"?

Answer: Franz Kafka

The film was called "Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life," and starred Richard E Grant (who has appeared on "Doctor Who" as The Great Intelligence) in the role of Kafka. The film combines the life of Kafka (Gregor Samsa is a character) with the Frank Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life" (1947) to create a surreal fantasy.
6. Peter Capaldi has had experience working with another "Doctor". He and Tom Baker were together in a 1991 TV mini-series about what scandal?

Answer: The Hitler Diaries

Tom Baker played Manfred Fischer, the CEO of Gruner + Jahr, one of the largest publishing houses in Europe, and Capaldi played Thomas Walde. "Selling Hitler" was a dramatization of the Hitler Diaries scandal. In 1982, a con artist produced forged diaries which he claimed were written by Adolf Hitler. The publishing house spent millions of dollars before discovering it was a hoax.

Tom Baker was the Fourth Doctor, serving from 1974 to 1981, making him the longest-lived incarnation among the first eleven.

The Iran-Contra scandal was a US political scandal involving the exchange of weapons for hostages.

The Lavender List was a 1976 scandal involving wealthy political supporters obtaining titles of nobility; there was a BBC drama about it in 2006.

Rinkagate involved MP Jeremy Thorpe hiring a hitman to kill his lover, Norman Scott.
7. Neil Gaiman has written several excellent episodes of "Doctor Who". Peter Capaldi worked with Gaiman on what 1996 television show set in an alternative London?

Answer: Neverwhere

Capaldi played an angel named Islington. Because he had failed in the task of protecting Atlantis, Islington was assigned to watch over the sewers of London. "Neverwhere" creates a parallel world beneath the streets of London called "London Below". The series became a media goldmine, with Gaiman turning it into a novel, and others making it a stage play, a comic book series, and a BBC radio play.

The Angel, Islington, is an actual district in Central London, named after a legendary hotel.
8. Peter Capaldi starred in the BBC comedy "The Thick of It" from 2005 to 2012. What was the name of his character?

Answer: Malcolm Tucker

Capaldi played Malcolm Tucker, spin doctor extraordinaire. While there have been comparisons to Alastair Campbell, who served the "enforcer" role in Tony Blair's Labour government, Capaldi said he based the character on Hollywood power players such as Harvey Weinstein.

Hugh Abbott (Chris Langham) was the bumbling MP that Tucker had to keep out of trouble, and Glenn Cullen (James Smith) was Abbott's best friend and chief adviser. The role did well for Capaldi -- he won a BAFTA Award in 2010, and two British Comedy Awards (2010, 2012) for his performance. "The Thick of It" was turned into a motion picture called "In the Loop" in 2009. Capaldi won a Chlotrudis Award for his performance, and was nominated for a variety of other critics awards.
9. What British monarch did Peter Capaldi play in the 2008 BBC miniseries "The Devil's Whore"?

Answer: Charles I

Capaldi was Charles I, king of England from 1625 until his execution in 1649. Charles' reign was notorious for political and religious strife, and he was such a despot that the monarchy was briefly abolished in England. "The Devil's Whore" was a fictional account set between 1638 and 1660, but featured the real-life soldier Edward Sexby. Sexby became famous for plotting the assassination of Oliver Cromwell. "The Devil's Whore" won the award for Best Drama Series at the 35th Broadcasting Press Guild Television and Radio Awards. John Simm, who played the Doctor's arch-nemesis The Master several times on "Doctor Who", was Sexby in "The Devil's Whore."
10. For regular viewers of "Doctor Who," Peter Capaldi is a familiar face. In which episode from Season Four (2008) did Capaldi play a leading role?

Answer: The Fires of Pompeii

Capaldi played Lucius Caecilius Iucundus, a sculptor and merchant in the doomed city of Pompeii. In the episode, the Doctor and Donna Noble battled volcanic creatures who were seeking to harness the power of Mount Vesuvius to turn humanity into a race of lava creatures. (It's not nearly as silly as that sounds.) The Doctor saved Lucius and his family at the end of the episode. "The Fires of Pompeii" was shot in Rome, and it marked the first time the new series filmed outside of the UK. Lucius Caecilius Iucundus was a real merchant, in first century Pompeii; however, he most likely died during the earthquake of AD 62, not in the eruption of Vesuvius.
