The character was inspired by a real person, John Peterman an entrepreneur who owned the J. Peterman Company. O'Hurley even became part owner of the real J. Peterman Company with the real J. Peterman. His character first premiered on May 18th, 1995 in the episode "The Understudy".

O'Hurley's character, King Neptune, was very arrogant and did not believe that Spongebob pulled the spatula even after everyone in the museum telling him that Spongebob did pull the spatula. Neptune ended up challenging Spongebob in a cooking contest where the pompous god of the sea lost.
