Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dog the Bounty Hunter, aka Duane Chapman, rose to national attention after the capture of which fugitive, who was an heir to the Max Factor fortune?

Answer: Andrew Luster

Andrew Luster was the great-grandson of cosmetics giant Max Factor Sr. His mother, Elizabeth, was the adopted daughter of Max Factor's daughter Freida. While on trial for multiple rapes in January 2003, Luster jumped bail and headed to Mexico. He was tried and convicted 'in absentia' (without being present). On June 18, 2003, Dog, along with his son Leland and 'brother' Tim, captured Luster in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Although Dog had been a bounty hunter for a long time before the Luster case, it was this case that thrust him into the national spotlight. Dog has two autobiographies out - "You Can Run But You Can't Hide", released in 2007, and "Where Mercy Is Shown, Mercy Is Given", released in 2010. Both books chronicle his wild life and his redemption from being a degenerate ex-con into an upstanding member of society and one of the best bounty hunters alive.
2. Three members of Dog's bounty hunting team were arrested in 2006 by US Marshals, with an extradition warrant from Mexico. Of the four listed below, which one was NOT arrested?

Answer: Sonny Westbrook

Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico and Dog, along with his son Leland and Tim Chapman were arrested after apprehending Andrew Luster in 2003. Initially the three were charged with deprivation of liberty, basically kidnapping. At first they were denied bail but once public pressure was brought to bear they were granted bail. They posted bail and on the advice of their attorney left Mexico.

On Sept. 14, 2006 just days before the statute of limitations was up in Mexico, the three were arrested by US Marshals in Hawaii. This began a year long process in which Mexico sought the extradition of the three while friends and supporters fought to stop the extradition. Finally, on Aug. 2, 2007 the First Criminal Court in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico dismissed all charges against the three saying the statute of limitations had run out.

Sonny Westbrook has been a friend of the Chapman family for many years. He trained Leland in boxing and mixed martial arts before an injury ended Leland's career. Now he is a de facto member of the team and is used in many cases.
3. Which state is home base for Dog Chapman and his bounty hunting team?

Answer: Hawaii

Dog moved to Hawaii in 1991 with the woman who would become his fourth wife, Tawny Marie. They separated after two years of marriage and had no kids. Dog established Da Kine Bail Bonds with his fifth wife Beth in Honolulu. Dog's show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" (2004-) followed the action of the team almost exclusively in Hawaii for most of the first season with a short three episode arc in Colorado.

As the seasons went on, the time in Colorado grew. Other members who join the team from time to time in Hawaii include Sonny Westbrook and Justin Bihag.
4. What state do Dog Chapman and his team often visit to do bounty hunting?

Answer: Colorado

Dog's bounty hunting roots are in Colorado where he got his start. After leaving prison in Texas, Dog went to Colorado in the late 1970s where he married Anne Tegnell, his second wife. While in Colorado Dog began working for local bondsmen and became one himself.

It was in Colorado that he first met Beth, his fifth wife, who was also in the bail business. He returned once or twice a year to help out local bondsmen in hunting down bail jumpers. They are mainly based on the east side of the Rockies, Colorado Springs, but have made trips to Grand Junction and Montrose in search of fugitives.

In Colorado there are several different bail bondsmen that Dog and the team work with, including Bobby Brown and Mary Ellen and Fred Pollack.
5. Before he became a bounty hunter, Duane 'Dog' Chapman served time in prison after being convicted of which crime?

Answer: First degree murder

Although Dog did not pull the trigger, he was tried and convicted of first degree murder in Texas in 1976. He was a member of the motorcycle gang the Devil's Diciples (misspelling intentional) when he and another gang member went to buy marijuana. The other gang member shot and killed the drug dealer while Chapman waited in the car. Under Texas law at the time he was charged with first degree murder and sentenced to five years in prison.

He served 18 months before being paroled. Because he is a convicted felon, he is not allowed to carry a firearm.
6. Which of Dog Chapman's sons has been with him in the bounty hunting business since before his reality show began airing in 2004 and is a boxer and mixed martial artist?

Answer: Leland

Leland is Dog's second son by his first wife, LaFonda Sue Honeycutt, and his third son overall. Dog had a son, Christopher, prior to marrying LaFonda but he was unaware of this until the child reached adulthood. Christopher's mother kept him from Dog.

Leland was unaware that Dog was his father until Dog won visitation rights when Leland was eight years old. Leland became troublesome to his mother in his teens and he was put into foster care. At thirteen he was given the option to go live with his father or to go back into foster care. He chose to go live with Dog. Leland is an integral part of the team and is relied upon for his speed and toughness.
7. Who is Dog Chapman's second oldest son, who returned to Hawaii to help out in the bounty hunting business?

Answer: Duane Lee

Duane Lee moved to Hawaii early on in the TV series "Dog the Bounty Hunter" to become a part of the team. He is Dog's second oldest son and older brother to Leland by the same mother. Duane Lee is actually Duane Lee Chapman II because he was named after his father.

At 17, Duane Lee went to live with Dog because he had gotten kicked out of school and was not getting along with his mother. Duane Lee and Leland, along with their half brother Wesley, formed Chapbros Media, a company that provides content for iPhone and iPad Touch.
8. What is the name of Dog Chapman's daughter, who moved to Hawaii and became a part of the bounty hunting business, although somewhat reluctantly at first?

Answer: Baby Lyssa

Baby Lyssa (Lyssa Rae Chapman) is Dog's tenth child and second daughter. Her mother is Dog's third wife, Lyssa Rae Brittain. She came to Hawaii early on in the filming of the TV show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" (2004 - ), along with her daughter Abbie. Lyssa has another daughter born to her in Hawaii, Madalynn Grace. Lyssa has an alcohol abuse problem which, according to Dog, runs in the family, and shewas arrested on March 15, 2011.

She has since gotten treatment and, after a period on probation at work, has returned to full-time with the family in bounty hunting.
9. What incident in 2007 almost ended Dog Chapman's career on reality TV and threatened to destroy the team?

Answer: His use of a racial slur when talking to his son on the phone

Dog's son Tucker taped a private phone conservation between the two and then released it to the media. In the conversation Dog used a racial slur when referring to Tucker's African-American girlfriend. A&E, the cable channel that aired Dog's show, suspended production immediately and the future of the show was in doubt. Dog apologized for his insensitivity and sought out Roy Innis, the chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality, among others, to apologize and make amends.

Although Mr. Innis had originally called for the show to be cancelled, he changed his mind after meeting with Dog and Beth on several occasions.

After Dog's apology tour in which he went on numerous talk shows and news shows to apologize, A&E began production of the show again in February 2008.
10. Tim Chapman was with Dog Chapman during the first few seaons of the show "Dog the Bounty Hunter". Although Dog always referred to Tim as his brother and Tim was a valuable member of the team, are they really related by blood?

Answer: No

Although Dog and Tim share the same last name, they are not related by blood. Dog called him his blood brother. Tim was an integral part of Dog's operation even before the reality TV show began and was with Dog and Leland in Mexico for the arrest of Andrew Luster.

He was a featured part of the first few seasons of the show. The strain of the arrest by US Marshals on the charges stemming from the apprehension of Luster in Mexico was hard on Tim. While it played out, he had family and other problems and was no longer part of Dog's bounty hunting business.

He has since been back on the show for a few hunts but is busy raising his daughters and cannot hunt like he did before.
