Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although they all work at the Las Vegas Crime Lab, which of the following original characters from "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" is the only one of these four to be originally from Las Vegas?

Answer: Warrick Brown

Played by Gary Dourdan, Warrick Brown is originally from Las Vegas, where he was born and raised. His childhood was difficult as his father abandoned him. Warrick once had a gambling problem that caused the death of a new CSI, Holly, whom he was supposed to be watching over in the premiere episode. Instead, he left Holly alone to investigate a murder when the killer came back to the scene and shot her.

While Warrick was sometimes mentioned as the only original crew member to be from Las Vegas, Catherine Willows' (Marg Helgenberger) past is unclear and inconsistent. She was originally said to have been born in Montana but that was later changed to Las Vegas.

Both Gil and Sara (William Peterson and Jorja Fox) are originally from California while Nick (George Eads) is from Texas.
2. Lauren Bacall plays Bond Rogers, a Carson City widow, who owns a boarding home and houses aging gunslinger JB Books in which John Wayne film?

Answer: The Shootist

"The Shootist" was John Wayne's final film. In it, he plays JB Books, an infamous gunslinger who is dying. He settles down in the Carson City boarding home run by Bacall's Bond Rogers and her son Gillom (Ron Howard). Books hopes to die quietly but soon the people in town want to meet him, both friendly and unfriendly.
3. Perfection, Nevada is the hometown of Val McKee and Earl Bassett, handymen who have encounters with which monstrous creatures in the film "Tremors"?

Answer: Graboids

In the film "Tremors", Graboids are giant, killer sandworms that live underground. The film calls them the sharks of the desert. Val McKee and Earl Bassett (Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward) are the film's main characters and handymen who come across the graboids and investigate them as the creature terrorize small towns in the Nevada desert.
4. The Ponderosa Ranch near Lake Tahoe was the home of which family on the show "Bonanza"?

Answer: Cartwright

The Cartwrights were led by patriarch Ben (Lorne Greene). Ben had been widowed three times and each marriage produced one son: Adam (Pernell Roberts), Hoss (Dan Blocker) and Little Joe (Michael Landon). Ben and his sons operated the Ponderosa Ranch near Lake Tahoe during a silver boom in the mid-19th century, specifically the Comstock Lode. Each episode presented a pressing moral issue that one of the Cartwrights would have to navigate.

They were also accompanied by Hop Sing, their Chinese cook played by Victor Sen Yung.
5. In "Showgirls", Nomi Malone is an aspiring Las Vegas showgirl played by which actress who is best known for playing a far more wholesome part on "Saved by the Bell"?

Answer: Elizabeth Berkley

Elizabeth Berkley is best known for playing straight-A feminist Jessie Spano on "Saved by the Bell." However, she broke away from that typecast when she played Nomi Malone in "Showgirls". Nomi hitchhikes her way to Vegas in the hopes of becoming a performer. However, she finds life difficult and competitive in Vegas as the other showgirls and the male audience give her trouble.
6. Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) is a Reno nightclub singer who goes into the witness protection program under what name?

Answer: Sister Mary Clarence

In the comedy film "Sister Act", Deloris witness her mobster boyfriend commit a murder and joins the witness protection program for her safety. She is relocated to a convent under the name of Sister Mary Clarence. Deloris lacks the restraint to be a nun but finds her place when she is put in charge of the choir.

However, Deloris' boyfriends tracks her down just as the Pope prepares a visit to hear her choir.
7. Jim Dangle, Trudy Wiegel and Travis Junior are just a few of the screwball police officers who serve which Nevada city in a comedy series?

Answer: Reno

"Reno 911!" was a comedy series that followed fictional police officers in Reno. Led by Lt. Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon), the department frequently had bizarre and comedic encounters with criminals. Many of the officers were totally incompetent, lazy or just really bad at their jobs. The series was a mockumentary spoof of "Cops" with much of the dialogue and actions improvised.
8. Which actor played Dan Tanna, a private detective often called to cases along the Strip in the 1978 series "Vegas"?

Answer: Robert Urich

"Vegas" was a 1978 crime drama starring Robert Urich as Dan Tanna, a P.I. This was during a time when there were many P.I. dramas on television featuring "cool" detectives who drove fast cars and liked beautiful women. Dan Tanna was no exception. He drove a 1957 Ford Thunderbird and often came across attractive women in his work.

He was frequently called to local casinos to investigate scams, cheating spouses, thefts or missing persons.
9. In which Walter Van Tilburg Clark novel do Art Croft and Gil Carter join a lynch mob trying to hunt down cattle rustlers throughout rural Nevada?

Answer: The Ox-Bow Incident

"The Ox-Bow Incident" is a 1940 novel and Clark's first published work. It centers on Art Croft and Gil Carter, two drifters in the Nevada countryside hoping to make a quick buck. The join a lynch mob, believing there could be something in it for them. The mob is hunting down cattle rustlers and murderers with scant evidence. Things quickly devolved into chaos and vigilantism.
10. Hey Reb!, the Mascot of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, resembles who or what?

Answer: A mountain man

Hey Reb!'s predecessors were the subject of some controversy given their appearance. One resembled a Confederate rebel soldier. Students found this racist and discriminatory. Moreover, Nevada was never a part of the Confederacy and is not a Southern state. That mascot was replaced with a Revolutionary War soldier but Nevada had no part in that war.

In the early 1980s, Hey Reb! was introduced after years of the university not having a mascot at all. Hey Reb! has a fluffy white mustache and wears a cowboy hat, paying tribute to the miners and mountain man explorers who helped establish Nevada.
