Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) was elected President of the United States after serving two terms as Governor of New Hampshire. Prior to that, he served as the U.S. Representative for New Hampshire's First Congressional District. Prior to entering political life, Bartlet was a college professor.

Josiah Bartlet is named after the real life Josiah Bartlet, one of the real life men from New Hampshire who signed the Declaration of Independence.

"Peyton Place" is a controversial 1956 novel by Grace Metalious, who claims the characters and events are based loosely on her real life experiences. The novel focuses on the lives of people in the small town of Peyton Place, especially their personal relationships with each other and their sex lives.

Some of the more controversial themes were sexual relationships between stepfather and stepdaughter, abortion and other taboo topics. The name Peyton Place became synonymous with any town appearing to be idyllic but having tawdry secrets.

While in his hometown, Davey meets some people from his past and finds himself in some hilarious, but troublesome situations.
