Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "American Pie" by Don McLean referred "The Day the Music Died" which referred to the time when several popular musicians died in a plane crash. Which musician did NOT die on that fateful day in the winter of 1959?

Answer: Brian Wilson

On February 3, 1959, while on an extended tour of the chilly midwest, Buddy Holly decided to treat himself and some of his fellow musicians to a chartered flight because their tour buses had been unbearably cold and uncomfortable. Singer Waylon Jennings gave his seat to the Big Bopper, who was suffering with the flu, and Valens won his seat with the toss of a coin.

The plane crashed outside Clear Lake, Iowa due to the wintery conditions and there were no survivors. Holly, Valens, Richardson, and the pilot, Roger Peterson, perished.

2. In the standard game of Clue or Cluedo, a Mr. Boddy or Dr. Black is found murdered and players must figure out the killer, the scene of the crime, and the weapon used. Which weapon was NOT included in the original versions of the game?

Answer: Ax

Clue goes by Cluedo in some countries, but all of the original versions contained the following weapons: candlestick, knife or dagger, lead pipe, revolver, spanner or wrench, and rope. An ax was not part of the repertoire.

Clue was created in the UK by English musician Anthony Pratt and his wife, Elva in the 1940s.

3. In the 2015 movie "San Andreas", Dwayne Johnson played a pilot during a major disaster. What did "San Andreas" refer to?

Answer: Earthquake fault line

There really is a San Andreas fault line that runs North-South through most of California. It's formed where two tectonic plates, the Pacific and the North American, smash into each other. Some cities were built up directly on the fault, but much of it runs through open space, national parks, and national forests.

In the 2015 movie, the pilot worked for the Los Angeles Fire Department and linked up with his estranged wife to find their daughter who was missing after a major quake in San Francisco. Critics for the most part did not praise the movie, except for the stunning visual special effects.

4. In the original story "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," young Dorothy and her house are swooped up into a tornado and deposited in a specific part of the Land of Oz. Which part was this?

Answer: Land of the Munchkins

In "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", the first book in the Oz series by Frank Baum, the magical land where Dorothy and Toto landed was called "the land of Munchkins", though later in the series, as well as in the MGM movie based on the book, it was called Munchkinland.

Dorothy landed smack dab in the middle of Munchkin village. Other areas within this special county are the Deadly Poppy Field, Mount Munch, and Unicorners, home to unicorns.

5. In the "Seinfeld" episode "The Stranded", this exchange happened between two major characters: Jerry: Yeah, this has got disaster written all over it. Elaine: How did I ever let you talk me into this, I must have been out of my mind. What was the disaster to which Jerry was referring?

Answer: A party on Long Island

The tenth show in the third season of "Seinfeld" saw Jerry and Elaine go along with George to a party of his work acquaintances in the suburbs of Long Island. As soon as they entered, George went off to talk to others, while Jerry and Elaine seem to be dreading every minute of this party where they don't know anyone and don't seem to want to know anyone.

To these people, being stuck in this type of social situation is a personal disaster.

The image here is a Long Island iced tea. To make a standard Long Island iced tea, pour 1/2 ounce each of triple sec, rum, gin, vodka, and tequila into a tall glass; add an ounce of sour mix and a splash of dark cola. The cola gives this drink the color of iced tea. Garnish with lemon and go easy; it's powerful!
6. In 2015, the professional magician Criss Angel rescued another magician during the rehearsal of a dangerous stunt. How was the magician in peril when Angel came to the rescue?

Answer: Floating in a water tank

During rehearsal of a new magic show, a stunt involving a magician's dangerous escape from a water tank 30 feet above ground went awry. The show's headliner, Criss Angel, reacted first and hoisted himself up the chains while the crew quickly brought the tank down, then ripped open the top of the tank and pulled the unconscious magician out. Everyone recovered but witnesses said there were a few moments of sheer terror.

This image is of a different type of tank.
7. The 1969 Altamont Speedway Free Festival was supposed to be a west coast version of the peace-loving Woodstock music festival, but it turned out to be anything but peaceful. The people hired to provide security at the concert were mostly involved in the violence. Who did the concert promoters hire?

Answer: Hell's Angels motorcycle gang

The west coast Woodstock on December 6th, 1969 was supposed to be free as well as peaceful, but some combination of beer, other substances, Hell's Angels, and negative vibrations in the air made for a concert that included a fatal stabbing, two fatal hit-and-runs, and one LSD-related drowning. The final act, The Grateful Dead, saw the violence happening mostly among the Hell's Angels and concertgoers and decided not to perform.

8. In his book "Into Thin Air", adventure author Jon Krakauer documented a disaster that had occurred in Asia in May, 1996 and resulted in eight deaths. What was the location of this disaster?

Answer: Mt. Everest

Every summer, hundreds of people try to summit Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on earth. During a summit attempt in the summer of 1996, several elements contributed to the death of eight people from India, the U.S., Japan, and New Zealand. Major causes cited include a sudden, fierce blizzard; bottlenecks down the mountain that led to delays in summiting; and an inadequate supply of auxiliary oxygen. One of the deaths was a leader, who refused to come down the mountain when he'd learned one of his clients had not survived.

This image is of crampons, which are used by mountain climbers to provide traction while climbing in snow and ice.
9. DC Comics produced a supervillain who had control over natural forces like earthquakes and tidal waves. He went by the name _____ Disaster. What word goes in the blank?

Answer: Major

Major Disaster began as a humble petty crook when he stumbled upon superpowers that Flash and the Green Lantern used for good, but he used for evil. He flipped between working for good and working for evil, and eventually perished at the Battle of Metropolis.

The rough-hewn gold leaf pictured here represents the gold leaf pin award to majors in the U.S. Army.
10. The 1980 movie "Airplane!" satirized disaster movies. One of the major plot points was when many of the passengers and crew members became sick after eating one of the two pre-packaged meals. If you were on this flight, which meal would you want to eat to avoid getting sick - chicken or fish?

Answer: Chicken

After the in-flight meal service, several people on the plane, including the pilots, became sick after they chose the fish. This left the lives of everyone in the hands of Ted Striker, a passenger who had been a wartime pilot but who had not flown after a traumatic accident. Although this sounds like a serious movie rather than a satire, it was full of puns, cameos, and hijinks. It was designed to deflate the self-importance of formulaic disaster films. It earned many accolades, and in 2011 a joint People Magazine and ABC named it the number one best comedy.

This picture is of a Faberge egg, representing the chicken, the safer of the two meals to eat on the flight.
