Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Invented a 'human aura' amplifier which resulted in the creation of a superpowered energy duplicate of himself.

Answer: Double X

Scientist Simon Ecks invented a 'human aura' amplifier in order to harness the energy which surrounded all human beings with the hope of controlling it. After testing the amplifier on himself, Ecks realized that his experiment had worked; he had indeed created a superpowered energy duplicate of himself, but the experiment's success had come at a high cost as it further fractured Ecks's already weakened mind causing his evil side to become dominant. Naming himself Doctor Double X, Ecks proceeded to create havoc in Gotham City until Batman and Robin stopped him.

Doctor Double X made his first appearance in DC Comics' "Detective Comics" #261.
2. Found worthy of being given access to his latent powers after having saved a Tibetan monk's life.

Answer: Druid

Anthony Druid was a highly successful and respected psychiatrist for many years until he became more involved in the study of the occult. After coming to the realization that he could no longer devote the necessary time he needed in order to help his patients, and also study his growing passion, Druid closed his practice and retired so he could travel the world in search of different occult disciplines. His travels took him to Tibet where Druid encountered a dying monk whom he saved from the brink of death. As a show of gratitude, the monk taught Druid how to access his latent mystical powers through occult disciplines which had been long-forgotten.

Doctor Druid was a master of many magical arts and possessed incredibly strong hypnotic powers, which could result in a person's will being overcome by him in order to make them see anything he wished, limited levitation ability, as well as the ability to shoot bolts of energy from his hands and eyes.

Doctor Druid first appeared in Marvel Comics' "Weird Wonder Tales" #19.
3. A freak accident bonded a mechanical harness to the skin and nervous system of this atomic scientist.

Answer: Octopus

Atomic scientist Otto Octavius created a mechanical harness with four octopus-like tentacles in order to help him safely work with radioactive substances from a distance. One night while working on an experiment, a freak accident occurred which caused the harness to be grafted onto his skin and nervous system giving him control of the additional 'arms'. Taking the name, Doctor Octopus, Octavius was a constant thorn in Spider-Man's side becoming one of his greatest enemies.

Doctor Octopus made his debut in Marvel Comics' "The Amazing Spider-Man" #3 (vol.1)
4. A family curse spurred this doctor into a career of disproving supernatural phenomena.

Answer: Thirteen

The Thirteen family was believed to have consorted with witches and other supernatural beings during the time of the Salem witch trials and this belief led the family to be cursed with bad luck. However, in actuality, they were just a family of very knowledgeable scientists whose daily lives only seemed to have been governed by the paranormal.

Many generations later, after the death of his father in an unexplained car accident, Terry Thirteen, set out to disprove all supernatural phenomena as nothing more than an advanced science which had yet to be understood. Terry enjoyed successful career as a "de-bunker of the supernatural" until he encountered the Phantom Stranger, a being a enormous mystical power. Try as he might, Terry could not disprove the Phantom Stranger nor his immense mystical abilities as anything more than what they were...supernatural.

Doctor Thirteen was a normal human being with no superhuman abilities; his greatest asset was his keen mind and attention to the smallest detail. He was not considered to be a superhero. He first appeared in DC Comics' "Star Spangled Comics" #122.
5. Irradiated himself with gamma rays.

Answer: Samson

Dr. Leonard Samson was able to siphon off a small amount of gamma radiation from the Incredible Hulk in order to return his patient, Betty Ross, to normal; she had been in a crystallized state after she'd had an encounter with a villain named, The Sandman. Betty's successful transformation made Samson curious to see what would occur if he used the excess radiation on a normal human, so he used himself as the guinea pig; the results were more than he could have imagined. Samson transformed from a frail psychiatrist into a green-haired, super-powered human being with the strength to lift about 70 tons.

Taking the moniker 'Doc Samson', he would encounter the Hulk on many occasions, although he could never truly defeat him. Doc Samson never became a superhero, officially, but he did lend his psychiatric knowledge (and sometimes physical strength) to that community when called upon.

Doc Samson made his first appearance in Marvel Comics' "The Incredible Hulk" #141 (vol.2)
6. Invented a device which acted as a space warp so that this doctor could commit crimes on other worlds.

Answer: Light

Arthur Light was evil long before he joined the ranks of the supervillain community. Inventing a device he thought would only allow him to peer into other worlds, Light discovered that he was not only able to do that, but also travel to them, as well. After visiting the planet Thanagar, a civilization whose technology was years ahead of Earth's, Light embarked on a life of crime using the advanced equipment he'd stolen. Light created a suit interwoven with Thanagarian technology and, thus, Doctor Light was born.

Doctor Light's suit was his only means of power as he was not super-humanly enhanced in any way; however, his scientific mind did allow him to lead several supervillain teams over the years, but each was roundly defeated by whichever the heroic team superteam they encountered.

Doctor Light first appeared in DC Comics' "Justice League" #12 (vol.1).
7. A nuclear plant explosion caused this doctor to create a solar powered suit of armor and become a supervillain.

Answer: Regulus

In the 30th century, Zaxton Regulus, turned to crime after losing his job at the nuclear plant where he was employed. He was conducting an experiment using solar energy and gold isotopes when it went horribly wrong. Seeking revenge on the person he felt (wrongly, of course) was responsible for his being let go, Dirk Morgna a.k.a. Sun Boy, of the Legion of Superheroes, Regulus built himself a solar powered suit of armor and became an enemy of Sun Boy and his team.

Doctor Regulus's solar powers eventually became a part of him whereby he did not need to rely on the suit in order to generate his heat or light force beams, although he did need to re-charge his powers from time to time via the Arion Star, a mechanical device he had invented for specifically that reason.

Doctor Regulus made his comic debut in DC Comics' "Adventure Comics" #348.
8. Blinded by a grenade.

Answer: Mid-Nite

Making his first appearance in DC Comics' "All-American Comics" #25, Dr. Charles McNider was called in by the police to help save the life of a key witness in their case against gangster, "Killer" Maroni. Determined not to have the witness testify, Maroni's goons blew up the room where the operation was taking place killing the witness and permanently blinding McNider...or so he thought. Surprisingly, McNider was able to see clearly in the dark, but he was completely blind in the light.

Inventing special glasses in order to see in the light, McNider was inspired to become a superhero. He developed an array of weapons and, along with his trusty 'sidekick' Hooty (an owl), joined the good fight along with other heroes of the day, like The Golden Age Atom and Hawkman, to rid the world of evil.
9. Childhood ridicule led to this doctor's discovery of using ectoplasmic material from the spirit world in order to control humans.

Answer: Psycho

Doctor Psycho endured a lifetime of ridicule due to his being born a little person. This led to his having a deep-seated hatred for all mankind, but especially women. During his college years, Psycho became interested in hypnosis and grew so adept at the process that he could overcome anyone's will making them see only what he wanted them to see.

Doctor Psycho invented a machine which could extract ectoplasmic material from the spirit world which he could use any way he saw fit. He then embarked on a life of crime which brought him into direct conflict with the Golden Age Wonder Woman many times, but he was always sounded defeated.

Doctor Psycho made his DC Comics' debut in "Wonder Woman" #5 (vol. 1).
10. Discovered a being made of pure energy while on an archeological dig in Mesopotamia.

Answer: Fate

As a young boy, Kent Nelson accompanied his father on an archeological dig in Mesopotamia where he stumbled across the tomb of an energy being named Nabu. Unfortunately, in the course of releasing Nabu, Nelson's father was killed by gas which leaked from the tomb; Kent was knocked unconscious. Taking pity upon the now orphaned child, Nabu took Kent and spent many years training him in sorcery and mysticism until he became a master of these forces. Nabu gave Kent an amulet, cape, and helmet and named him Doctor Fate.

Doctor Fate was one of the most powerful sorcerers in the entire DC universe and was a founding member of the Justice Society of America. He made his first comic book appearance in DC Comics' "More Fun Comics" #55
