The Historical Phantoms - The 1. Phantom Quiz

Welcome to my quiz about the first Phantom. The Phantom is a comic, that was created by Lee Falk in 1936 as a newspaper strip. Lee Falk did not write that much about the historical phantoms so most of the facts are from the so called Egmont lore.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Phantom, Christopher Walker, was born in Portmouth, England in 1516. It is also rumoured by some that his name was Christopher Standish. Christopher wanted to become a sailor, and became a cabin boy on his father's ship at the age of 10. Years later on his father's last trip, the ship was attacked by pirates and his father was killed. In what year did this happen?

Answer: 1536

Christopher Walker was the only survivor and was washed ashore in Bengalla. Some time after, his father's murderer also washed ashore on a beach, dead. On the skull of this man, Christopher Walker swore an oath, that was later to be known as the Oath of the Skull: "I devote my life to the destruction of all forms of piracy, greed and cruelty. My sons and their sons will follow in my footsteps." This was the beginning of the phantom line.
2. Christopher was found by a group of pygmies, natives of Bangalla. They were run away slaves. Who were they?

Answer: a group of Bandar men

Christopher Walker helped to get them and the rest of the tribe freed from the Wasaka "giants", and they became his friends. He showed them how to make poison for their arrows from poisonous berries. The home of the Phantom, The Skull Cave, is found in the Deep Woods, the home of the Bandars.
3. During the pirate attack on his father's ship Christopher managed to unmask the pirate leader. Who was he?

Answer: El Aswad

He was known as El Aswad, but his real name was Kizim. After Christopher had freed the Bandars, he started looking for the pirates. He knew what the leader looked like, but not his name. In a local market, Christopher recognized some weapons that came from his father's ship.

He was told by the marketseller, that Kizim the merchant and a friend of the Sultan had sold them. Christopher challenged Kizim to a duel but lost, he wasn't good enough trained. Kizim had him whipped, and gave orders to have him secretly killed. With the help of the Bandars he survived, and when he got better Christopher travelled around the jungle learning from each tribe: swimming, arrowshooting, running and more until he was as good as the best in the jungle. From Abu Simba, a traveling man, and former captain, Christopher learnt the art of fencing. Abu Simba had also had been Kizim's fencing master.

In order to catch Kizim, Christopher set up a trap, that he was a rich merchant traveling. Kizim and his pirates attacked and he and Christopher fought again.

This time Christopher won.
4. What was the name of the pirate group that El Aswad was the leader of?

Answer: Singh pirates

The Singh pirates are still an enemy of today's Phantom.
5. Christopher had a cousin he grew up with. His cousin wanted to become a knight and hoped to join Knights Hospitaller (also known by such names as Knights of Rhodes, Knights of Malta, Cavaliers of Malta, and Order of St John of Jerusalem). What was his cousin's name?

Answer: Simon

In 1538 Christopher had a vision about him. Simon asked him to go to Malta to clear his name, Knights Hospitaller believed he was a traitor to their order. When he arrived in Malta he was told the story:
30 years ago a big treasure was brought from Rhodos, but the ship sank. The trasure was saved and hidden in a cave, and now (30 years later) count Emilie d'Auvergne was sent to retrive it, leading a group of men. Simon went with him because he was Count Emile's squire. They were captured by pirates and only count Emilie returned saying Simon had betrayed them to the pirates. All the others who went had been killed, only Emilie managed to survive.
Christopher found out the truth and cleared Simon's name. It was count Emilie d'Auvergne who really was the traitor.
6. In 1541 Christopher arrived in England to see his mother's house on fire. He managed to save an old man, Paracelsus, but he was not in time to save his mother. Paracelsus gave later the Phantom a ring. What ring was it?

Answer: the "Bad Mark"

Paracelsus gave Christopher Walker a ring with the mark of a skull, which became known as the bad mark. It was believed to have belonged to a Roman Emperor.
7. Which Roman Emperor was believed to have owned the skull ring?

Answer: Nero

It was also believed that the ring would lead to some treasure that belonged to Nero, which it did. A big diamond found in the catacombs of Rome.
8. Before Christopher meet his wife, he was in Paris and saw a woman thrown into the river Seine. Christopher saved her life and she told him she was King Francis I, cousin. She was on her way to warn him about a plot against his life. She bore Christopher a son he never knew about. Who was this lady?

Answer: Gabrielle

She named her son René. Christopher never saw her again.
9. Christopher Walker was shipwrecked on Africa's west coast and was picked up by one of two Spanish ships on their way to "the new world". Onboard one of the ships he got to know a lady who was on her way to get married. She later became his wife. What was her name?

Answer: Marabella

Marabella was the granddaughter of Christopher Columbus (fiction), and they were married in 1546. Some stories say he was married to Christina, daughter of Eric the Rover, but I haven't read that story and in Egmont lore which I'm more familiar with, Marabella is his wife. They had a son in 1548, and named him Christopher.
10. What year did Christopher Walker, who later became known as the first Phantom die?

Answer: 1566

He was wounded after a battle on Malta and arrived back in Bengalla in Febrary 1566 and died shortly after. Just before he died his son swore the Skull oath and became the second Phantom.
The Phantom name didn't become used until Christopher's grandson became the third Phantom. Then the natives started to believe he was the same man as earlier and that he was the man who cannot die.
