The Saint Trivia Quiz

My quiz "Saintly Sleuths" has been criticized for not having a question on Simon Templar. With my abject apologies, a quiz entirely on "The Saint".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was The Saint's literary "father"?

Answer: Leslie Charteris

Leslie Charteris (born Leslie Charles Bowyer-Yin) published the first "Saint" book in 1928. Altogether he wrote 50 "Saint" books in English and more than 40 in French.
2. What was the title of the first "Saint" book?

Answer: Meet - The Tiger!

The hardcover edition was published in 1928 in England by Ward Lock. The first US edition came in 1929 by The Crime Club. Many of the "Saint" books were published under a number of titles; "Meet - The Tiger!" was also published as "Crooked Gold" and "The Saint Meets The Tiger".
3. In the books, The Saint drives a Hirondel. What car does Roger Moore drive in the original TV series?

Answer: Volvo P 1800

The Hirondel was a fictional car. In the 1960s, the Volvo P 1800 was a hot new sportscar and the producers decided to use this car rather than the other option, a Jaguar XK-E. The fact that Volvo was willing to supply a car, while Jaguar was not, might have helped their decision. The other cars were used in different "Saint" movies or series.
4. Everybody knows Roger Moore was the original TV Saint. But who of the following actors has NOT played the role?

Answer: Dirk Benedict

The original series consisted of 118 hour-long episodes and ran from 1962 to 1969. In the late 1970s, Ian Ogilvy starred in the second series ("Return of the Saint") which had 24 hour-long episodes. Simon Dutton starred in the third series in the late 1980s, in 6 two-hour films. Andrew Clarke starred in a pilot in 1987 which was never continued ("The Saint in Manhattan").
5. What was The Saint's famous logo?

Answer: A stick figure with a halo

The figure was designed by Leslie Charteris himself.
6. Which of these "Saint" movies did NOT come out in 1939?

Answer: The Saint and The Brave Goose

"The Saint and The Brave Goose" came out in 1980, starring Ian Ogilvy. George Sanders was The Saint in the 1939 movies. The first "Saint" movie, starring Louis Hayward, came out in 1938 ("The Saint in New York").
7. Simon Templar got his nickname "The Saint" because he was once trained as a priest.

Answer: False

His nickname comes from his initials. The Saint uses a number of aliases but they always have the initials "S T". Another explanation is that he frequently leaves a drawing of a stick figure with a halo at the scene.
8. Who was The Saint's main opponent and sometimes collaborator at Scotland Yard?

Answer: Inspector Teal

In the earlier years, Teal tried forever to arrest The Saint, but in later years they sometimes worked together.
9. In some of the earlier books The Saint had a lady friend. What was her name?

Answer: Patricia Holm

She dropped out of the books without any explanation until 1990: when Charteris drew up the outline of a "Son of The Saint" movie he explained that she left when she found out she was pregnant.
10. The Saint's adventures take him to many exotic places, although he operates mostly in the UK and the USA. Where is the setting for "The Convenient Monster"?

Answer: Scotland

The Loch Ness Monster gets blamed for a number of murders. The 1959 short story has been anthologized several times and televised in 1966.
