The Joy family in the 'Pokemon' anime have many members who are nurses, and are based on the nurses in the games who work in the Pokemon Centres. They have pink / red hair and all look very similar, though Brock is somehow able to tell them apart. The crosses on their hats show what locations they work at.

Serena Joy is the wife of the Commander who has employed Offred, the heroine of the book and series, as his Handmaid (a woman used as a surrogate mother, in keeping with extreme interpretations of Biblical tradition), as Serena Joy apparently cannot have children. (In the Christian fundamentalist republic of Gilead, formerly the USA, infertility is seen as women's fault.) As a Wife, she wears a blue dress and is considered to be of a higher rank in society than other women such as Handmaids or Marthas (older women who are servants).

She is played by Yvonne Strahovski in the TV series, and her surname is Waterford (she does not have a confirmed surname in the book).
