Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Manchester band Joy Division broke up when their lead singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide, and the surviving members formed New Order. Which of these answers is a New Order song and NOT a Joy Division one?

Answer: Regret

Bernard Sumner (vocals and guitar), Peter Hook (bass) and Stephen Morris (drums) were the surviving members of Joy Division and formed New Order along with keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. While Joy Division were a post-punk guitar band, New Order's music took a more electronic and dance direction, and they were part of the early '90s 'Madchester' scene. 'Regret' is a single from the album 'Republic'.
2. The 'Joy Luck Club' is a film about the relationships between four mothers and their daughters. All four mothers are immigrants to the US from which Asian country?

Answer: China

'The Joy Luck Club' was released in 1993 and is based on the book of the same name by Amy Tan. It features four Chinese women, Suyuan Woo, Lindo Jong, Ying-Ying St Clair and An-Mei Hsu, and their American-born daughters, Jing-Mei, Waverly, Lena and Rose. Each mother (besides Suyuan, who is dead) and daughter narrates two chapters in the book.

The story focuses on the relationships between the women and the children, the differences between Chinese and American culture, and the struggle of being a foreigner in a sometimes hostile country.
3. Reverend Timothy Lovejoy is a minister with a gossipy wife and a love of train sets. In which animated sitcom would you find him?

Answer: The Simpsons

Reverend Lovejoy is the irreverent minister at the First Church of Springfield. Many of the congregants find his sermons incredibly boring. His wife Helen is friends with Maude Flanders, the wife of Homer's super-religious neighbour Ned, and is a notorious gossip who often says, "Will someone PLEASE think of the children?" He also has a daughter, Jessica (voiced by Meryl Streep), who Bart has a crush on.

He is voiced by Harry Shearer.
4. Three Dog Night had a hit with 'Joy to the World', not to be confused with the Christmas carol of the same name. The first line is about someone called Jeremiah, who was a good friend of the singer, but what kind of animal is he described as?

Answer: Bullfrog

The line in question is 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog / Was a good friend of mine / Never understood a single word he said / But I helped him drink his wine.' The song is sometimes mistakenly called 'Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog' because of this. The band described it as a 'kids' song'. It was certified gold in 1971 and went on to become one of the biggest-selling singles of all time.
5. In 2015, the film' Joy' was released, and told the story of Joy Mangano, a single mother turned entrepreneur. Which American actress, known for her starring role in the 'Hunger Games' movies, played Joy Mangano?

Answer: Jennifer Lawrence

Joy Mangano invented several products, including the Miracle Mop, a self-wringing plastic mop; Huggable Hangers, clothes hangers covered with velvet; Shades Readers, a range of reading glasses sold in sets; and Forever Fragrant, a range of odour neutralisers in various forms. 'Joy' tells the story of her life as an entrepreneur, and how she came up with the idea of a self-wringing mop after cutting her hand on glass while cleaning up a wine spill. Mangano herself was executive producer, and Diane Ladd and David O. Russell won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenwriter respectively, while Lawrence won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture.
6. Which Japanese franchise, based on the concept of tiny collectable monsters, features a family of nurses all called Joy?

Answer: Pokemon

The Joy family in the 'Pokemon' anime have many members who are nurses, and are based on the nurses in the games who work in the Pokemon Centres. They have pink / red hair and all look very similar, though Brock is somehow able to tell them apart. The crosses on their hats show what locations they work at.

Their personal Pokemon include Wigglytuff, Chansey and Audino. They are also responsible for handing out Pokemon to newbie users in cities without Pokemon Professors.
7. Joy Turner is a character in the sitcom 'My Name is Earl', the ex-wife of the title character. Which actress portrayed her?

Answer: Jaime Pressly

Joy Turner, formerly Joy Hickey, is Earl's ex-wife and the mother of Dodge and Earl Jr (who is not Earl's biological child). She gets pregnant after having sex with Earl as a party while he is dressed as a skeleton and gets him drunk enough to marry her, even though he is already in a relationship with Jessie. She cheats on Earl with a cook called Darnell, and divorces him while he is in the hospital recovering from a car accident. She initially tries to steal Earl's lottery winnings as she believes he owes her half, but the two eventually become friends.

The other answers are actresses who were also in the show. Alyssa Milano played Billie Cunningham, Nancy Lenehan played Earl's mother Kay, and Nadine Velasquez played Catalina the housekeeper.
8. Joy Bryant is an American model and actress. In which US drama series, featuring a family with a child with Asperger Syndrome, does she play Jasmine Trussell?

Answer: Parenthood

'Parenthood' is about the three generations of the Braverman family. Jasmine Trussell is married to Crosby Braverman, who is the third of the four Braverman children. They have two children, Aida and Jabbar. Jasmine is a dancer, and tries to contact Crosby so that Jabbar can meet his father. Although their relationship is fraught with difficulties, Crosby and Jasmine marry in the third season.

Max Braverman, the son of Crosby's older brother Adam, has Asperger syndrome. The other two Braverman siblings are Sarah and Julia.
9. Megan Joy was a contestant on the eighth series of 'American Idol'. She attracted attention from satire site Vote for the Worst with a song in Michael Jackson Week which ended in a bird impression. Which song was this?

Answer: Rockin' Robin

Megan Joy, full name Megan Joy Corkrey, sang 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man' at her first audition, and got past the wildcard round singing KT Tunstall's 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree'. When she sang 'Rockin' Robin' for the Michael Jackson themed week, she finished her performance by cawing like a crow. Vote for the Worst, a now defunct site set up to mock 'American Idol' and vote for bad and/or eccentric contestants, supported her during the series as a result.

She was elminated in the Top 9 week after singing Bob Marley's 'Turn The Lights Down Low'.
10. Serena Joy is a televangelist - or was, anyway, until the Republic of Gilead made it illegal for women to work. In which series, based on a book by Margaret Atwood, does she appear?

Answer: The Handmaid's Tale

Serena Joy is the wife of the Commander who has employed Offred, the heroine of the book and series, as his Handmaid (a woman used as a surrogate mother, in keeping with extreme interpretations of Biblical tradition), as Serena Joy apparently cannot have children. (In the Christian fundamentalist republic of Gilead, formerly the USA, infertility is seen as women's fault.) As a Wife, she wears a blue dress and is considered to be of a higher rank in society than other women such as Handmaids or Marthas (older women who are servants).

She is played by Yvonne Strahovski in the TV series, and her surname is Waterford (she does not have a confirmed surname in the book).
