Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This cartoon character is a nature documentary-maker and may be seen on Nickelodeon travelling around Africa with his family, including his daughter Eliza, and a chimpanzee named Darwin. What is his name?

Answer: Nigel Thornberry

Nigel Thornberry is the eccentric British father of a family of documentary-makers and nature enthusiasts in the cartoon "The Wild Thornberrys". This series is centred on Eliza, Nigel's youngest daughter who has the ability to communicate with animals.

The family also includes the mother (Marianne) and older daughter Debbie, who is usually accompanied by a wild boy named Donnie whom the family befriended.
2. Doctor Doolittle is famous for his ability to communicate with animals, but which author created this much reproduced character?

Answer: Hugh Lofting

The series of "Doctor Doolittle" books began in 1920 with "The Story of Doctor Doolittle". The character is believed to be based on the Scottish surgeon John Hunter, who kept a variety of exotic animals in his home in Earl's Court. Many of these animals were known to be dangerous in the wild, but were said to exist quite peacefully under the ownership of John Hunter.

Doctor Doolittle has also featured in several films, including in 1967 with Rex Harrison playing the title role and in 1998 with Eddie Murphy.
3. Van Pelt was slightly less than loving towards the animals in his job. This character was played by Jonathan Hyde in a 1995 film about a board game which had very real consequences. Which film was this?

Answer: Jumanji

Jumanji is a board game which challenges players to try to make it to the end whilst encountering various violent aspects of nature, including a monsoon, a stampede, a lion, and a troop of unruly monkeys! The film begins with Alan Parrish and Sarah Whittle playing, before Alan is sucked into the game, leaving Sarah to run screaming from the house pursued by bats. Fast forward several years and the game is finally resumed by a new pair (Judy and Peter Shepherd) who subsequently release Alan (now played by Robin Williams) from the game. Jonathan Hyde plays both the strict father of Alan Parrish and the severe Van Pelt, who emerges from the game to hunt Alan.
4. Jeff Goldblum (as Professor Brody) attempted to create a serum which would cure him (and others) of allergies to one of the animals in the title of this 2001 film. Which film is this?

Answer: Cats & Dogs

This film sees Jeff Goldblum play the father of a dog-loving boy named Scotty. Scotty loves his dog Lou (voiced by Toby Maguire), but his dad is allergic and is trying to develop a cure in his basement laboratory. There are several talking canines in this film, which form a noble allegiance against the evil cats that plan world domination, headed by the fluffy Mr. Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes, better known as Jack from "Will & Grace").
5. The song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" features many animals and animal noises. What other noise is heard at the end of the first, second, and fifth lines of each verse?

Answer: Ee-aye-ee-aye-oh!

This song can frequently be heard in classrooms and buses across the globe, and features animals such as the bow-wowing dog, the mooing cow, the oinking pig, and, in some versions, the nerping turtle! In one of the earliest versions of this song (dating from 1917), the noise is not "ee-aye-ee-aye-oh", but "Ohio-i-o", and the farmer is called Macdougal rather than MacDonald.
6. The 1991 song "Rodeo" tells of a woman who loves a man, but who is unable to compete with the rodeo for the man's love in return. Which artist recorded this song?

Answer: Garth Brooks

The song tells us that the woman would give "half of Texas" for the man's love, but knows that he is too devoted to the "bulls and blood" and "dust and mud" of the rodeo. The song is written from the woman's perspective and indeed was originally intended to be performed by a woman, but several turned the song down before it was offered to Garth Brooks.
7. Dr Montgomery Montgomery was the guardian of the trio of orphans in the second book of Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events". He was an animal-lover and herpetologist, even keeping several exotic specimens in his house. What is the name of this book?

Answer: The Reptile Room

Dr Montgomery Montgomery was the eccentric and gentle guardian of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire after they fled from their sinister first guardian, Count Olaf. Montgomery was killed by Count Olaf, who continued to pursue the orphans in the hope of inheriting their family fortune, and who used snake venom to cover up his part in the death.

The book describes Dr Montgomery as an eccentric and plump gentleman, but in the 2004 film was portrayed by the whacky, tall and lean Billy Connolly.
8. This man studies perhaps the most famous fictional creatures in the world - Pokemon. He gives Ash Ketchum his first Pokemon in the Blue, Red, and Yellow versions of the "Pokemon" Game Boy game. What is his name?

Answer: Professor Oak

Professor Oak studies Pokemon and runs a Pokemon research lab in Pallet Town, the hometown of Pokemon's original protagonist, Ash Ketchum. He gives Ash his first Pokemon (a choice of Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Charmander in the Blue and Red versions of the Game Boy game, or Pikachu in the Yellow version).

He also provides a Pokedex so that Ash can catalogue the Pokemon he collects during his quest to "catch 'em all".
9. In one of the most famous British comedy sketches, an angry Mr Praline (played by John Cleese) frustratedly tries to demonstrate to the pet shop owner that the parrot he sold him is dead. This is appropriately known as "The Dead Parrot Sketch", but which comedy group is behind it?

Answer: Monty Python

Monty Python is a group made up of Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, and Eric Idle. This particular sketch sees John Cleese as the disgruntled customer who claims that the parrot he has been sold is, in fact, dead, while Michael Palin (as the shopkeeper) refuses to accept the irrefutable evidence in front of him and continues to claim that this particular parrot likes to sleep on its back, or that it is merely stunned.
10. In this 1996 film, Glenn Close played a fashion boss who works with animals in a darker sense of the word - she used their fur to make coats. What film was this?

Answer: 101 Dalmatians

The character in question is, of course, Cruella de Vil. In the original story by Dodie Smith, Ms de Vil was a spoiled heiress who has a passion for fur clothing, and in particular takes a liking to the Dalmatian puppies of Mr and Mrs Dearly. In the 1996 film, Cruella was portrayed as the head of a successful fashion company, where she was heavily involved in the design of the products, the main one being a Dalmatian fur coat, which should be made of puppy fur before the coat becomes coarse.
