Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which television programme that aired on NBC from 1999 to 2005 centred on officers on the late shift of the New York Police Department and the New York City Fire Department?

Answer: Third Watch

Set during the 3pm to 11pm shift (the third watch) the series followed the lives of police officers, firefighters and paramedics based at the fictional 55th precinct and firehouse. The show, which balanced single episode events with on-going story lines, received a fair deal of criticism for its detailed violence and frequent use of profanity.

The main cast included Eddie Cibrian in the role of firefighter James "Jimmy" Doherty. Their season three episode "In Their Own Words", which had a number of the show's regular actors/characters introducing film clips featuring interviews of real life firefighters who responded to the 9/11 attacks, earned the programme the prestigious Peabody Award.
2. The song "Believe", a tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty following the September 11 attacks in the US, appears on the album "Ocean Avenue" by which American pop punk band?

Answer: Yellowcard

"Ocean Avenue" is the fourth studio album by Yellowcard and was released in July of 2003. The song "Believe" incorporates excerpts from New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg's, speech on the first anniversary of 9/11 as well as Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. It received positive reviews from critics who enjoyed the fact that it spun a positive light on the situation and, in comparison with a range of songs of similar ilk, was generally uplifting.
3. Fireman Farrell appears in DC Comics "Crisis on Infinite Earth #7" (October 1985) being interviewed by which reporter, who is usually depicted as Clark Kent's love interest as a teenager in Smallville?

Answer: Lana Lang

Created by Arnold Drake and artist John Prentice fireman Fred Farrell Jr. first appears in "Showcase Vol. 1 #1" which was published in March of 1956. Farrell is drawn to fire rescue with a vow to uphold the honour of his father, a fireman who was killed in the line of duty. Initially he is a part of the Center City Fire Department but after the "Crisis" series he relocates to Metropolis. In "Batman & Superman: World's Finest #4", released in July, 1999 we find that he's been promoted to Captain of the Metropolis Fire Department.
4. The novel "Amerika" (1927), which began life as a short story called "The Stoker", was written by which German language author?

Answer: Franz Kafka

"Amerika" looks at the slightly "off the wall" adventures of sixteen year old Karl Robmann who is sent off to New York in America to avoid the scandal of getting a house maid pregnant back home. The first chapter is called "The Stoker" and deals with Karl taking up the cause to save the job of a stoker on the ship he has travelled on.
The short story "The Stoker" was originally published in 1913. Kafka had always planned for this to be the start of his novel "Amerika" on which he'd stopped work without warning. It was eventually published posthumously.
A stoker (or fireman) is one who looks after the running of steam engines.
5. The fictitious town of Pontypandy in Wales serves as the backdrop for an animated children's television series revolving around the adventures of the local firemen. What is the name of the title character that puts one in mind of green eggs and ham?

Answer: Fireman Sam

Fireman Sam is the brainchild of Dave Gingell and Dave Jones, both former firemen. Sam is regarded as the local hero and is a classic example of a true fireman: remaining calm under crisis and lending a helping hand when needed. He enjoys inventing things in his shed during his free time. The name Pontypandy is derived from Pontypridd and Tonypandy, two towns in South Wales that are 5 miles apart from each other.

"Green Eggs and Ham" is a book written by Dr. Seuss and contains a character called "Sam I Am".
6. When wizards are confronted with an Incendio spell they need to think like firemen to put it out. You've studied with Harry Potter so raise your wand, point at the fire and cast which of these spells to get a spray of water?

Answer: Aquamenti

You'll have good luck with Aquamenti providing your aim is true. Reducto explodes solid objects. Reducio makes enlarged objects (victims of engorgio) smaller. Portus will change an object into a portkey.
7. In the "Mega Man" video game series the Fire Man is a Powered Up Robot Master that carries which identification code that almost makes him sound like a super spy?

Answer: DRN-007

The Robot Masters are humanoid machines with an advanced level of artificial intelligence who have been given specific roles. Fire Man's weapon is called Fire Storm and his task is waste management, predominantly by incineration. His body colour is red and grey, he has a torch like head, speaks with a strong Texan accent and his favourite phrase is "the fires of justice burn hot".
DRN-006 is Bomb Man, DRN-005 is Ice Man and DRN-004 is Guts Man
The hint of "super spy" alluded to James Bond whose number is 007.
8. Guy Montag is the fireman who develops a curiosity for books in which work by Ray Bradbury?

Answer: Fahrenheit 451

"Fahrenheit 451", published in 1953, introduces a world where books are deemed worthless and authors and teachers are considered enemies of the state. As a result people have become shallow, self absorbed and indifferent to the world around them. Montag's job is to destroy books but, in the process of burning them, he is struck by the beauty of an opening line in one particular book "Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine" and decides to steal it. This story is often seen as a condemnation of censorship though Bradbury disputes this, pointing out that it is more a visualisation of the mind numbing effects of television and other forms of mass media.
9. Does the George Strait song "The Fireman" deal with a firefighter who negotiates with bushfires, burning buildings and arson?

Answer: No

The fireman in the song is a ladies' man who can appease an unsatisfied woman, calm the angry damsel and placate a distressed female.

"Last night they had a bad one a mile or two down the road.
Well my buddy walked out and left his woman burning out of control.
Well I was down there in about an hour or so.
With a little mouth to mouth she was ready to go.
I'm the fireman, that's my name."

The song was released, as a single, by George in May, 1985 and it was the third from his 1984 album "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind". Panned as a one joke effort that pales quickly, it reached number five on the US Billboard Hot Country charts and number ten on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks.
10. Which Ron Howard film told the story of Chicago firefighters from Engine 17 and could be otherwise titled "Rearcurrent"?

Answer: Backdraft

"Backdraft" is a 1991 action thriller starring Kurt Russell as Lt. Bull McCaffrey, William Baldwin as his brother Brian McCaffrey, Scott Glenn as Axe Adcox, JT Walsh as Martin Swayzak, and Robert De Niro as Shadow Rimgale. The movie followed the story of the firefighters as they battled backdrafts in different fires.

A backdraft is an explosive flare up of a fire that has been starved of oxygen by the rapid reintroduction of oxygen.
