Most of Monty Python's songs--well, all really--are silly; too silly to be the subject of a quiz. Or so you would think. There are people who seem to like that kind of thing. It's not my personal cup of tea, mind you, but there you go.

Monty Python Movies and TV Mix Trivia Questions

1. Which python sang 'I am a lumberjack and I'm OK'?

From Quiz
I am a Lumberjack and I'm OK

Answer: Michael Palin

The song was written by Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Fred Tomlinson. Michael Palin is the lead singer and there is a chorus of the other team members dressed as Mounties. The words, of course, are quite ridiculous rhyming lavatory with tree, and mentioning having buttered scones for tea.

2. The front cover of 1971's 'Another Monty Python Record' appears to be a crossed-out record of Beethoven music, but the introduction (and quick-to-follow apology) at the beginning of the album belies this record was mistaken for what?

From Quiz Monty Python: The Audio Quiz

Answer: Pleasures of the Dance: A Collection of Norwegian Carpenter Songs

Also heard in the opening cut is an excerpt of 'The Trondheim Hammer Dance', which is held every 25 minutes in the town of Trondheim. Another apology is briefly shoved into the middle of the first 'Spanish Inquisition' skit.

3. Monty Python and Art: What unreasonable request did the Pope make of Michelangelo regarding "The Last Supper"?

From Quiz The Cultured Python

Answer: One Christ, twelve Disciples, no kangaroos.

Thanks to Monty Python, we now know that Michelangelo's original "The Last Supper" featured 28 Disciples, a kangaroo and three Christs (with a fat one balancing two skinny ones). He wanted "to give the impression of a real mother of a blow-out". The Pope wasn't too pleased with this version of artistic license, which resulted in Michelangelo's retort, "You don't want an want a bloody photographer".

4. "The Golden Age of Ballooning" was one of two episodes never to have a title sequence. What was the other one?

From Quiz Very "Monty Python": Part D

Answer: The Cycling Tour

"The Cycling Tour" was about Mr. Pither, played by Michael Palin, who was taking a European cycling tour and landed himself in many mishaps. One of which he was captured by the Soviets and escaped a firing squad because they were very poor shots.

5. John Cleese played the customer in this sketch - what was his character's name?

From Quiz The Cheese Shop

Answer: Mousebender

Given that a lot of surnames came from occupations, one wonders what his ancestors did for a living. This sketch came from the third season of Monty Python's Flying Circus and was first shown on 30 September 1972. I am indebted to shaby for suggesting it.

6. Which future Python played the bookshop assistant to Marty Feldman's eccentric customer?

From Quiz Ethel the Aardvark, anybody?

Answer: John Cleese

John Cleese was born in Weston-Super-Mare. His father had changed the family name from Cheese in World War I. Nowadays, younger quizzers will know him primarily as 'Nearly-Headless Nick' in the Harry Potter series, but he is one of the finest actors around. 'Fawlty Towers', written by John Cleese and his then wife, Connie Booth ('Polly' the maid), is regularly voted the UK's favourite comedy series.

7. The vaunted "Parrot Sketch" opens with Mr. Praline, played by John Cleese, entering a nondescript pet shop. What is Mr. Praline's first line of the sketch?

From Quiz Dead Parrots Across the Ages

Answer: "Hello, I wish to register a complaint."

"The Parrot Sketch", also known as "Dead Parrot", debuted on "Monty Python's Flying Circus" in the eighth episode of the first season. In its original form, Mr. Praline ends up being referred to another pet shop in Bolton, and the sketch disintegrates to the point that Graham Chapman's Bernard Montgomery-like Colonel eventually stops the proceedings as they have become "too silly". Subsequent performances of the piece have featured tighter, more concise endings.

8. The Tony-award winning musical 'Spamalot' is mostly an adaptation of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", but which Python movie does the finale come from?

From Quiz Monty Python Sings

Answer: The Life of Brian

Also used in the middle of the show, 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' was originally sung by Brian's fellow crucifixees at the conclusion of "The Life of Brian".

9. This person is the youngest Python, often played enthusiastic parts, and has gone on to make several television programs on travel. Who is he?

From Quiz Everything But the "Parrot Sketch"

Answer: Michael Palin

Michael is just weeks younger than Eric Idle. He has gone on to star in films such as "A Fish Called Wanda".

10. In the "Middle Age" scene from "The Meaning of Life", what two football teams were suggestions for the topic of a conversation for the middle-aged couple?

From Quiz Very "Monty Python" : Part C

Answer: Steelers and Bears

The couple picked philosophy for a conversation topic.

11. "Never be rude to an ______."

From Quiz Very "Monty Python" : Part B

Answer: Arab

Terry Jones sang it at the "Hollywood Bowl".

12. In the "Spam Sketch," what was the name of the restaurant?

From Quiz Very "Monty Python" : Part A

Answer: Ada's Snack Bar

You can get a good glimpse of the sign when the camera is going over to the "And now for something completely different" guy.

13. What was the name of the archetypal Python character with the knotted hanky on his head?

From Quiz A Python Who's Who

Answer: Gumby

Played by the brilliant Michael Palin. Grundy makes the Aussie soap Neighbours, so are also in the comedy business. (Al) Bundy was the hero of 'Married with Children'. Mr Brumby is my clarinet teacher.

14. What is the name of the first song in the show?

From Quiz Monty Python "Live at the Hollywood Bowl"

Answer: Sit On My Face

This is a pretty funny song, if you like that sort of thing.

15. Prior to the arrival of the Brit Michael Baldwin, the faculty of the Philosophy department of the U. of Woollomooloo was composed entirely of men named what?

From Quiz Brits vs. Colonials: Python Makes Fun of Oz

Answer: Bruce

Upon ascertaining that the pom is not in fact named "Bruce", one of the Aussie Bruces notes that this will "cause a little confusion," and another asks "Mind if we call yer Bruce?" To be fair to Austrileyer, statistics suggest that several people in Oz, including a number of women, are NOT named Bruce. (The Kiwis do not have this problem as they are all named Kevin.)

16. This question is a downer, because that's the way the Pythons would want it (you know, irony and all!) Which of the Monty Python members was the first to become an 'Ex-Python' (i.e. to die)?

From Quiz Where Have You Gone, Monty Python?

Answer: Graham Chapman

Poor Graham Chapman. After a long struggle with alcoholism, which led to poor health, he succumbed to cancer (and also a stroke). He was the straight man of the group, playing the lead roles in the "Holy Grail" and "Life of Brian". Really a charming fellow, I must say!

17. Whose RAF father was killed in a road accident when he was young?

From Quiz Monty Python - The ONLY Religion

Answer: Eric Idle

After his father's death, Eric claimed his mother went to pieces. This part of his life has been said to have inspired much of Eric's writing.

18. John Cleese was very concerned about his recently purchased parrot. What quote best describes what's actually wrong with the bird?

From Quiz 'Complete Waste Of Time' Monty Python 1

Answer: 'He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace!'

The 'Dead Parrot' sketch featured in episode 8 of the first 'Flying Circus' series and featured Michael Palin and John Cleese. It has been featured in the 'Now For Something Completely Different' movie, 'Live At Drury Lane' and many other feature albums and performances.

19. Which country did Michael Palin want to go to?

From Quiz Monty Python

Answer: Finland

"Finland, Finland, Finland: the country where I quite want to be. Your mountains so lofty. Your treetops so tall. Finland, Finland, Finland. Finland has it all." - Michael Palin

20. (HG) What is the capital of Assyria?

From Quiz "Monty Python" Geniuses

Answer: I don't know!

The actual historical capitals of Assyria were, from oldest to most recent - Ashur (or Qalat Sherqat), Calah (or Nimrud), the short-lived Dur Sharrukin (or Khorsabad), and Nineveh. The area that Assyria was in is now called Iraq, for those who were wondering where the heck it is. [Thanks to "The Mesopotamian Encyclopedia"]

21. In "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", which fierce creature, with a 'vicious streak a mile wide', was the eventual target of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch?

From Quiz Fetchez la Vache! Cool Monty Python Animal Stories

Answer: Rabbit from the Cave of Caerbannog

In a hilarious scene, Tim the Enchanter warns King Arthur and his partially intrepid band about the peril lurking within the dark maw of the Cave of Caerbannog. Out hops a white bunny rabbit creating immediate disdain for Tim's forecast of disaster. However, the rabbit soon reveals itself to be a lethal killer, leaping (as if a puppet - which it was!) from exposed throat to exposed throat. Carnage ensues with John Cleese as Tim yelling 'I warned you' in a Scottish brogue. In panic, Brother Maynard is asked to deploy the powerful artifact, the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. The instructions involve counting to three then 'lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe'. In true fashion, counting to three is a confused mess involving skipping three and going straight to five, expressly against the instructions. Nevertheless the projected hand grenade eventually does its task and the killer rabbit 'snuffs it'. Question from Phoenix Rising member, MikeMaster99, who has been captivated by this film for decades and enjoyed taking his family to watch a live version of the derived musical, 'Spamalot'.

22. Which Python sang the theme song to the popular British comedy show 'One Foot in the Grave'?

From Quiz I am a Lumberjack and I'm OK

Answer: Eric Idle

Eric Idle wrote and sang the theme song for 'One Foot in the Grave' which was a very funny British comedy about a man who has been made redundant from his job and finds it difficult to adapt to the change of life style. Victor Meldrew the main character, brilliantly played by Richard Wilson, is so grumpy that the name has become a byword for a miserable old man. Annette Crosby plays his long-suffering wife.

23. Monty Python and Literature: What classic, brooding novel did the Pythons present in semaphore?

From Quiz The Cultured Python

Answer: Wuthering Heights

The Pythons understood the importance of alternate forms of communication, and they captured the pain and torment of Catherine and Heathcliff brilliantly with naval flags. Emily Bronte would certainly have approved if she weren't dead. Besides the version of "Wuthering Heights", the Pythons also shared with us "Julius Caesar on an Aldis Lamp" and "The Gunfight at OK Corral in Morse Code" (the latter taking place in the great state of Arizona).

24. Who was Queen Victoria pestering in the "rare" filming of her in her garden in the "Sex and Violence" episode?

From Quiz Very "Monty Python": Part D

Answer: William Gladstone

In the sketch, Queen Victoria kicked and threw water and paint on him. It's funny they made this sketch because the real Queen Victoria didn't like William Gladstone, who was one of the Prime Ministers during her reign.

25. Who played the 'Purveyor of Fine Cheese to the Gentry and the Poverty Stricken Too'?

From Quiz The Cheese Shop

Answer: Michael Palin

Nowadays, Michael Palin is very popular on UK TV for his travel shows. All the wrong answers were also members of the Python team. Sadly, Graham Chapman is no longer with us.

26. What was the first title asked for?

From Quiz Ethel the Aardvark, anybody?

Answer: 'Thirty Days In the Samarkand Desert with a Spoon'

By A.E.J. Elliott, apparently - and, surprisingly, they haven't got it in stock. All the wrong answers were winners or shortlisted by 'The Bookseller', the British book-trade magazine, in its competition to find the oddest book title of the year. Apparently 'Male Genitalia of Butterflies of the Balkan Peninsula' had been barred as the judges suspected that the title had been made odd on purpose.

27. What variety of parrot goes into the great beyond during this sketch?

From Quiz Dead Parrots Across the Ages

Answer: Norwegian Blue

The name "Norwegian Blue" is, of course, a joke in itself, as there are no indigenous parrot species outside the tropics. The other listed varieties are bona fide parrots. The African Grey is noted for its exceptional intelligence, though it is problematic as a pet; it requires a great deal of attention, and is prone to bite with its strong beak. The eclectically-colored Cuban Amazon, which occurs in the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands as well as Cuba, is actually in danger of becoming an endangered species due to the destruction of its habitat. The Australian King is rather popular as a pet in and around its native land (the east coast of the continent), but is relatively unknown beyond this range.

28. What song includes these lyrics? "He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps, he likes to press wild flowers, he puts on women's clothing, and hangs around in bars."

From Quiz Sing Along With Monty Python

Answer: Lumberjack Song

This is another song from television. It was written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones and performed by Michael Palin with a chorus of Canadian Mounties. It kind of breaks down at the end when the chorus sings "He wears high heels? Suspendies...and a bra?"

29. In "Galaxy Song," how long does it take the earth to go around the galaxy?

From Quiz Monty Python Sings 101

Answer: Two hundred million years

It's amazing how much factual (and accurate!) knowledge they crammed into this song. I can't help but imagine the look on Ptolemy's face were he to hear it! (This song could also be sub-titled, "Song That's Sure To Get You Burned At The Stake As A Heretic In The Early Middle Ages.")

30. Which American diplomat did the Monty Python troupe write a song about?

From Quiz Monty Python Sings

Answer: Henry Kissinger

Among other things, they said he had "...nicer legs than Hitler..."
